Chapter 192 Tenderness

Chapter 192 Tenderness

In the VIP hospital room, the sharp smell of disinfectant mixed with the scent of flowers drifting through the open window.

Michael lay face-down on the bed, his back wrapped in thick bandages. His face was still pale, but whenever he looked at Emily, his eyes softened with unmistakable warmth.

On the nightstand, Emily had arranged a bouquet of fresh white roses, their petals still beaded with morning dew—the flowers he'd once told her he loved.

Next to them sat a thermos of chicken soup she'd made that morning, the clear broth dotted with red jujubes and goji berries.

She'd spent hours researching recipes to help him recover, testing and tweaking until she got this one just right—light but nourishing.

Emily barely left his side. She helped him drink water, wiped the sweat from his forehead, fluffed his pillows—every movement careful and deliberate.

Dark circles shadowed her eyes. She clearly hadn't been sleeping.

At night, the slightest sound from him would jolt her awake, terrified he might tear his stitches.

She'd watch over him until the early hours, only dozing off when she physically couldn't keep her eyes open anymore, then wake at dawn to make breakfast and check in with the doctors.

"I'm really okay now. The doctor said I just need to rest."

Michael watched her anxious face with a mix of affection and helplessness, reaching out to take her cool hand in his.

"You can't keep doing this to yourself. You need rest too—you're not alone anymore."

His gaze dropped to her still-flat stomach, where their baby was growing.

The thought of a tiny life joining them someday—with her eyes and his nose—filled him with a tenderness he'd never felt before.

Emily nodded, but her forehead stayed creased with worry. "I know, but..."

The memory of him shielding her from that burning beam, lying unconscious in the flames, sent a fresh wave of terror through her.

The fire, the smoke, the way he'd looked lying there on the ground—it still woke her up at night.

Each time, she had to reach out and feel his warm skin before she could calm down.

As night fell, only the dim bedside lamp lit the room.

Because of his back injury, Michael could only lie on his side or stomach. Moving was difficult.

He watched Emily curled up in the visitor's chair beside him, her sleep restless. She kept trembling, probably from nightmares.

Damp strands of hair stuck to her forehead, soaked with cold sweat.

"Emily," he said softly, his voice especially clear in the quiet. "Come sleep in the bed."

Emily opened her eyes, groggy and hesitant. "I can't—your injury..."

"The bed's big enough. You can sleep on the other side. You won't touch my wound."

"I want to hold you."

Only with her in his arms could he truly relax. Even the pain in his back seemed to ease when she was close.

Seeing herself reflected in his eyes, seeing that vulnerability there, Emily's heart melted.

She stopped protesting and carefully climbed onto the bed, lying down beside him as gently as she could, keeping a safe distance so she wouldn't jostle his wound.

Michael reached out and drew her carefully into his embrace, letting her rest her head on his shoulder.

His chin rested on top of her head as he breathed in the faint scent of her hair. The burning pain in his back seemed to fade.

Nestled in his warm embrace, listening to his steady heartbeat, Emily's tense body finally relaxed.

She instinctively pressed closer, her arm gently circling his waist, feeling the rise and fall of his chest.

They did nothing more than hold each other through the night.

But in the quiet darkness, their warmth and breathing intertwined, the intimacy and trust between them deepening.

A week later, after a thorough examination and Emily's endless reminders, Michael was finally cleared to go home.

His back still needed time to heal, though, so he had to rest. Most of Wilson Group's business was temporarily handed over to Tobias, with Michael only handling the critical documents that required his personal approval.

That afternoon, Michael was working through an urgent file in his study when Emily walked in carrying a glass of water and a plate of cut fruit.

Seeing how pale he still looked, she couldn't help herself. "Michael, the doctor said you need more rest and shouldn't sit for too long. Maybe this document can..."

Before she could finish, Michael set down his pen and turned to face her, his gaze locking onto her lips with a hint of exasperation.

He reached out and gently pulled her toward him, then leaned up and kissed her, swallowing all her unspoken worries and nagging.

Emily froze, eyes widening in surprise, but soon, under his gentle insistence, her body melted and her cheeks flushed pink.

She shyly closed her eyes, responding to this tender kiss with clumsy but willing participation.

The air filled with the sweet scent of fruit and something warmer as sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting shadows on the floor that outlined their embrace.

But just as things were heating up and their breathing grew heavier, someone knocked on the study door!

Emily jumped from Michael's arms like a startled deer, frantically smoothing her rumpled collar and hair.

Her cheeks burned bright red, her eyes too flustered to look toward the door.

Michael watched her with barely concealed amusement before resuming his usual composure and clearing his throat. "Come in."

The door opened to reveal his assistant.

The moment Tobias stepped inside, he picked up on the lingering atmosphere and noticed Emily's flustered expression and swollen lips.

He immediately realized he'd walked in at the worst possible time. Embarrassment flashed across his face as he quickly lowered his head, set the documents on the desk, and spoke rapid-fire.

"Mr. Wilson, here are the urgent documents you requested, all processed. Please review them. If there's nothing else, I'll be going!"

With that, Tobias practically bolted, thoughtfully closing the door behind him.

Silence returned to the study. Emily covered her face, mortified. "This is all your fault..."

Michael chuckled softly, pulling her back into his arms, his tone completely unapologetic.

"My fault? Mrs. Wilson, we're legally married. What's wrong with a little intimacy?"

Emily shot him a fierce look, then wrapped her arms around his neck.
