TWENTY-NINE

While she stood in line at the cafeteria, waiting for her turn to order food, she couldn't help but stare at the handsome chef who was preparing the meals. He was tall and lean with short, dark hair that was styled neatly. His deep brown eyes were focused on the food in front of him, and his strong jawline gave him an air of confidence. Abby felt her heart skip a beat as he looked up and smiled at her.

"What would you like on your sandwich?"

Abby blushed and realized he had been asking her a question. She quickly composed herself.

She paused for a moment, trying to think of what would be the best combination of flavors. She then launched into a detailed analysis of the ingredients and flavors she wanted.

"I would like lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions on my sandwich," she said, "and for the sauce, I think a little bit of honey mustard would be perfect. I want the chicken to be well seasoned, but not too spicy, and I want the bread to be toasted to a nice golden brown."

The chef listened intently as Abby spoke, nodding and making notes on a pad of paper. "Sounds good," he said with a smile. "Anything else you'd like to add?"

Abby shook her head. "No, that's all. Thank you."

The chef got to work on making her sandwich, and Abby continued to watch him, impressed by his skill and expertise. She felt a bit nervous about making conversation with him, but she was determined to try.

As the chef finished up her sandwich, he asked, "So, are you a foodie or something? You seem to know a lot about flavors and ingredients."

Abby blushed a bit but smiled, happy that he had noticed her knowledge.

"Yes, I guess you could say that. I love trying new foods and analyzing the flavors. I think it's fascinating how different ingredients can come together to create something amazing."

The chef handed her the sandwich, and Abby took a bite, savoring the flavors. "Mmm, this is delicious," she said with a grin.

"The chicken is perfectly seasoned, and the honey mustard adds just the right amount of sweetness. And the pickles and onions give it a nice crunch."

Abby felt her heart flutter at the sound of his voice. She had been crushing on him for weeks but had never been brave enough to strike up a conversation. Now that she had his attention, she didn't want to let it go.

The chef smiled, pleased with her feedback. "I'm glad you like it. You have a refined palette. Have you tried our diet cake yet? It's one of our specialties."

Abby shook her head, curious. "No, I haven't. What's in it?"

The chef began to describe the ingredients, and Abby listened intently, feeling herself getting lost in the conversation. She was enjoying talking to the chef so much that she almost forgot she was supposed to be eating her sandwich.

“Hold on a sec,” he said pulling a small plate from rhe rack and adding a moderate slice of a cake on it.

He handed it to her.

"You really didn't have to do that."

The chef grinned and replied,

"It's on the house. And besides, I can't have my favorite customer eating something unhealthy, can I?"

"This cake is made with almond flour and coconut oil instead of wheat flour and butter. It's sweetened with honey and fresh fruit, and it's gluten-free and low in calories. I hope you enjoy it," he said.

Abby looked at the cake, which had a delicate frosting and was topped with fresh berries. She took a bite, and her taste buds exploded with joy. The cake was moist, light, and had a hint of citrus and vanilla. She closed her eyes and moaned with pleasure.

"Oh my god, this is amazing! It's so light and flavorful, and the frosting is just perfect. How did you make it?" she exclaimed.

The chef chuckled at her enthusiasm. "It's a secret recipe, but I can tell you that it involves a lot of love and passion," he said with a wink.

Abby blushed at his flirtatious tone and couldn't help but smile. She took another bite of the cake and savored the moment. She felt a connection with the chef, a shared love of food and a mutual admiration.

Abby blushed and felt a sudden warmth in her chest. She couldn't believe that the chef remembered her as a regular customer. She smiled and said,

"Thank you so much. This means a lot to me."

The chef replied, "It's my pleasure. I'm glad that you enjoy my food. And if you ever have any suggestions or feedback, please don't hesitate to let me know."

Abby nodded and said, "Of course. I'm always happy to give feedback. And to be honest, I don't have any suggestions for improvement. Your food is amazing."

The chef smiled and said, "Thank you. That really means a lot to me."

*****

Abby walked slowly towards the empty table in the far corner of the cafeteria. Her heart was racing, and her palms were sweaty. She could feel the hundreds of butterflies fluttering in her stomach. She sat down and placed the grilled chicken sandwich and the diet cake on the table in front of her.

As she took a deep breath and began to eat, she could feel her mind wandering back to Leo. His chiseled jawline, piercing brown eyes, and his toned arms - she couldn't stop thinking about him. She took another bite of the sandwich, and it tasted amazing.

Suddenly, Abby's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of someone clearing their throat. She looked up and saw Leo standing in front of her, holding a tray with a sandwich and a bottle of water.

"Mind if I join you?" he asked with a warm smile.

Abby felt her face flush as she stuttered a response, "Uh, no, not at all."

"Hey, I was wondering if you're free on Friday evening? I know this great place that I think you'd really enjoy."

Abby's heart skipped a beat. She couldn't believe that Leo was actually asking her out on a date.

"Um, yeah, sure," she stammered, trying to play it cool. "That sounds great."

Leo smiled at her response, "Awesome. I'll pick you up at 4:00 pm?"

Abby nodded, still feeling a bit overwhelmed. "Yes, that works for me."

Leo got up from the table, "Great, I'll see you then."

Abby watched as he walked away, still feeling like she was in a dream. She couldn't believe that her crush had just asked her out on a date. She sat there for a few moments, lost in her thoughts, before realizing she needed to get back to work.
