Chapter 59 The Unexpected Surprise
Adeline narrowed her eyes suspiciously at Julian the moment he told her she needed to promise not to get upset first. That alone already sounded like a terrible sign to her. In her experience, people only asked for promises like that when they already knew they had done something questionable. Unfortunately, Julian was standing there looking far too calm for her liking, and that only made her even more nervous about whatever ridiculous thing he was about to say next.
She crossed her arms tightly over her chest before letting out a slow sigh. “Fine,” she said reluctantly. “I promise not to get upset, although I already feel like I’m going to regret saying that.” She stared at him carefully before continuing. “Now can you please just tell me what your brilliant solution is already? Because my patience is running very thin.”
Instead of answering her immediately, Julian simply turned around and started walking toward his walk-in closet. Adeline frowned deeply while watching him move across the room without explaining anything. The confused look on her face only deepened the closer he got to the closet entrance.
“Julian,” she called out with visible annoyance, “why are you walking away instead of answering me?”
He glanced back at her briefly before finally speaking. “Come here,” he said simply.
Adeline remained where she was for a few seconds, staring at him skeptically. She genuinely had no idea what he was doing anymore. First he dragged her all the way to his room, claiming he had some kind of solution, and now he was summoning her into his closet like some kind of mysterious fashion designer preparing a reveal.
“You are genuinely weird,” she muttered under her breath before finally walking toward him.
Julian ignored the comment completely. The moment she reached him, he gently took her hand and guided her further inside the large walk-in. Adeline looked around briefly while following him. This was actually her first time properly entering his closet, and honestly, she did not think there had ever been any reason for her to be inside here before now. The space was ridiculously large, filled with expensive suits, shoes, watches, and clothes organized so perfectly that it almost looked like a luxury store instead of someone’s personal closet.
She was just about to ask him again what exactly this was all about when her eyes suddenly landed on something hanging in one of the empty spaces farther inside the closet.
Immediately, she stopped walking.
The sudden halt nearly caused Julian to walk into her from behind, but he stopped himself just in time, and Adeline barely even noticed. Her eyes remained fixed on the outfit hanging in front of her.
It was beautiful.
A pair of floral-patterned flare pants hung neatly from a hanger, the material soft and elegant under the warm lights. Beside it was a white sleeveless top carrying the exact same floral pattern as the pants. The entire outfit looked delicate and expensive without being overwhelming. It somehow managed to look both soft and bold at the same time.
For a few seconds, Adeline simply stared at it silently. Then slowly, she turned toward Julian.
He was already staring at her carefully, and for the first time since she arrived, she noticed something unusual on his face. Julian Hale looked nervous. Not just nervous, but expectant too, like he had been waiting anxiously to see how she would react.
Adeline frowned slightly before pointing toward the outfit. “What is this?” she asked slowly.
Julian took a deep breath before answering her. “I know I may have crossed the line,” he began carefully, “and you’re completely allowed to say no if you hate it, but…” He paused briefly before continuing. “You’ve been complaining for days that you couldn’t find anything to wear to the wedding, and you also made it very clear that you don’t want to wear a wedding dress.”
Adeline stayed silent while listening to him.
Julian rubbed the back of his neck slightly before continuing. “I remembered that my late mom’s wedding dress was still somewhere in the family house,” he said. “So I went to retrieve it, and I had it remade into something you could wear instead.”
The moment those words fully registered in her head, Adeline’s eyes widened slightly in disbelief. For a few seconds, she genuinely thought she must have heard him wrong.
Slowly, she turned back toward the outfit again before looking at Julian once more. “Wait,” she said carefully, “so you’re telling me that what I’m looking at right now…” She pointed toward the outfit again. “Was originally your mother’s wedding dress?”
Julian nodded once.
“And you had it remade for me?” she asked again, still sounding stunned.
The nervousness on Julian’s face deepened almost immediately. Clearly, he was taking her shock as a bad sign.
He quickly stepped forward slightly. “Okay, before you get angry,” he said quickly, “I know I probably should’ve asked for your permission first before doing something like this. I know that. I really do.” He sighed lightly before continuing. “I just wanted it to be a surprise, and I also knew we were running out of time before the wedding. I wanted to make sure it was finished early enough just in case you actually liked it.”
Adeline continued staring at him without saying anything.
Julian suddenly looked even more uncomfortable under her silence. “I genuinely wasn’t trying to upset you,” he added quickly. “I just thought…” He paused briefly before sighing again. “I thought maybe this would feel easier for you, and it’s not a dress.”
Adeline slowly turned her attention back toward the outfit hanging quietly inside the closet. The more she looked at it, the more shocked she felt.
It was not just the fact that he had gone out of his way to create something for her. It was the fact that he had actually listened to her. Somehow, Julian had taken all her complaints, all her irritation, all her stubborn refusal to wear a wedding dress, and instead of continuing to push her into doing something she clearly hated, he had actually tried to find a compromise.
That alone was shocking enough, but the fact that he had used his mother’s wedding dress somehow made the entire thing feel even heavier.
Adeline glanced back at Julian slowly. He still looked nervous, which honestly felt strange to see on someone like him. “You really did this?” she asked quietly.
Julian nodded again. “Yes.”
Adeline stared at him for another long moment before looking back at the outfit once more. Her mind genuinely did not know how to process any of this properly. She had expected many things when Julian claimed he had a solution for her wedding outfit problem. She had expected manipulation, stubbornness, or maybe another ridiculous attempt to drag her into another wedding dress conversation.
This? This was the last thing she had expected.
Her eyes slowly moved over the floral patterns again. The outfit still carried a softness to it that hinted at its origin as a wedding dress, but at the same time, it had been transformed completely into something she could actually imagine herself wearing.
For the first time in days, the thought of her wedding outfit did not immediately make her chest tighten with discomfort, and that realization alone caught her off guard.
A strange laugh suddenly escaped her lips. It was short and soft, almost disbelieving.
Julian immediately looked even more confused by the reaction. “Why are you laughing?” he asked cautiously.
Adeline shook her head slowly while still staring at the outfit. “I honestly don’t even know,” she admitted quietly.
She looked back at him again, and for once, her usual sharp responses completely failed her. Her mind genuinely felt blank because what exactly was she even supposed to say to this?
She had spent days fighting with him over dresses, wedding shops, fashion blogs, and expectations. She had practically snapped at everyone around her over the wedding, and somehow Julian had quietly gone and done this behind her back instead, and somehow, against all logic, it actually felt thoughtful.
That realization unsettled her more than she wanted to admit. Adeline looked back toward the outfit again before letting out another small laugh under her breath. This one sounded even more confused than the first.
“I honestly don’t know what to say, Julian,” she admitted finally. “I have no words."
