The engine roared as Clara sped down the road, the headlights of the car behind us drawing closer and closer. The tension inside the car was almost suffocating. Evelyn sat in the back seat, clutching the laptop to her chest, while I held onto the door, trying to steady my breathing.

“They’re not going to give up easily,” Clara muttered, her eyes fixed on the road. “If they catch up to us, there won’t be any negotiations. They’ll try to force us off the road.”

“What are we going to do?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“We’ll keep them at a distance for as long as we can,” Clara replied, gripping the wheel tighter. “But if that doesn’t work, we need to be ready to fight.”

Simon’s car began gaining ground, and soon it was alongside ours. One of the men rolled down the window, and I caught the glint of a gun.

“They’re going to shoot!” I shouted, my heart racing.

“Hold on!” Clara barked, swerving the car sharply to the right. The sudden maneuver forced their car onto the shoulder, but they recovered quickly and resumed the chase.

Gunshots rang out in the night, the deafening sound making me flinch. One shot struck the side of our car, and the metallic screech of impact sent shivers through me.

“Evelyn, find us another route,” Clara commanded, her voice tense but composed.

Evelyn quickly opened the laptop, typing frantically. “There’s a side road about a kilometer ahead,” she said, glancing nervously behind us. “If we can make it there, we might lose them.”

“Then that’s where we’re going,” Clara replied, accelerating even more.

Clara turned onto the side road at the last second, the tires screeching on the wet pavement. Simon’s car attempted to follow but was delayed by the unexpected maneuver.

“This will buy us some time,” Clara said, taking a deep breath. “But not much.”

The road was narrow and surrounded by dense trees. The claustrophobic environment heightened my anxiety, but I knew we couldn’t stop. Clara kept her focus, expertly dodging low branches and potholes while Evelyn worked to update the map.

“There’s a bridge up ahead,” Evelyn announced. “If we cross it, we can create a barrier to slow them down even more.”

Clara nodded, her jaw clenched. “We’re almost there.”

As we reached the bridge, Simon’s car was once again closing in on us. Clara glanced at me quickly, her eyes filled with meaning.

“Bela, I need you and Evelyn to get out as soon as we cross the bridge,” she said, her voice firm. “I’ll distract them.”

“No way!” I protested, my heart clenching at her words. “I’m not leaving you.”

“You have to trust me,” Clara insisted, her tone leaving no room for argument. “I need you both to take the documents to my contact. If anything happens to me, at least we’ll know Richard didn’t win.”

“Clara…” I began, but she cut me off.

“Please, Bela,” she said, her voice softening. “I promise I’ll find you afterward.”

Reluctantly, I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. Evelyn looked equally hesitant but knew there was no time to argue.

Clara crossed the bridge and abruptly stopped the car. “Go!” she ordered, stepping out and grabbing the iron poker she always carried.

Evelyn and I hurried out, running to the far side of the bridge as Clara positioned herself to face Simon and his men. I glanced back, my heart aching at the sight of her standing alone against them.

“Clara will be fine,” Evelyn said, trying to reassure me as she pulled me away. “She knows what she’s doing.”

“I hope so,” I murmured, my voice barely audible.

On the other side of the bridge, Clara stood firm as Simon and his men got out of their car. He looked confident, a cruel smile on his face.

“Do you really think you can stop us alone, Clara?” he taunted, stepping forward.

“I don’t need to stop you,” Clara replied, raising the poker. “I just need to slow you down.”

The fight began immediately. Clara was quick and agile, dodging blows and striking back with precision. Simon underestimated her skill, and it cost him. But the numbers were against her, and every move seemed to drain more of her energy.

As Evelyn and I ran through the forest, looking for a way out, something inside me snapped. I couldn’t just run while Clara risked everything. I stopped abruptly, grabbing Evelyn’s arm to halt her as well.

“I have to go back,” I said, my voice firm.

“Bela, are you crazy?” Evelyn exclaimed. “Clara wants you to leave!”

“And I want her to live!” I shot back, tears welling in my eyes. “I can’t leave her alone, Evelyn. You can go to the contact, but I have to help her.”

Evelyn hesitated, but seeing the determination in my eyes, she finally nodded. “Be careful.”

I turned and ran back toward the bridge, my heart pounding so hard it felt like it would burst. When I arrived, I saw Clara still fighting, but her breathing was labored, and Simon’s men were closing in.

“Clara!” I shouted, grabbing a large rock and hurling it at one of the men.

She looked at me, surprise and relief flashing in her eyes. “Bela, what are you doing?”

“Helping you,” I replied, picking up another rock as I ran to her side.

Simon laughed, clearly amused. “Two against us? This is going to be fun.”

“Maybe,” Clara replied, raising the poker again. “But we’re not giving up.”

As we prepared for the next wave of attacks, the sound of distant sirens cut through the air. Simon and his men exchanged nervous glances, hesitating for a moment.

“Looks like you’re lucky tonight,” Simon said with a cold smile. “But this isn’t over.”

He and his men quickly retreated, disappearing into the night as the sirens grew louder. Clara and I stood frozen, our breaths heavy as silence returned.

“You’re insane,” Clara finally said, turning to me. But there was a small smile on her lips, and the relief in her eyes was undeniable.

“Maybe,” I replied, trying to catch my breath. “But I couldn’t leave you.”

Clara just shook her head before pulling me into a tight embrace. And for the first time that night, I felt that maybe, just maybe, we had a chance to win.
