Chapter 42

Claire's POV

When I woke up from the dream, I looked around and remembered that I was staying in a motel.

Yeah, it was just a dream, how could I be the happy one? Maybe at the moment of birth, my fate was written by God, I was destined to be an unloved and unlovable person, no matter how hard I tried and how good I became, no one would love me.

It's okay, Claire, you still have yourself!

I encouraged myself, because I knew that there was no one else in the world to rely on, and if I didn't encourage myself, I would have stayed in this motel. Maybe one day I'll die here, my body rotting and stinking, and only the attendant will find me when he comes to clean up.

After checking out at the front desk, I walked out of the motel, and outside was a rare glimpse of sunlight in London, it was so brilliant, but not a single bit of it belonged to me, and even I wanted to walk in the shadows, not to be illuminated by it.

Now, there really isn't a place that belongs to me anymore, the cottage, the home of Connor, the place where I grew up fighting to grow up, the Green home, the home of Lydia, Wendy and Hope, I'm so much like a stray dog ......

I laughed to myself and pulled out my phone again, intending to see how much money I had left and figure out how to spend the rest of my life.

The credit card Connor gave me was frozen, and I only had enough money to rent a rundown apartment in a poor neighborhood in the middle of nowhere for a month, and now I can't even afford to buy a decent dress.

However, those two houses are definitely not to go back.

In order to save a little money, I did not even look for a housing agent, walked alone to the stinky and dirty poor district, walked all afternoon to find a dilapidated house to rent.

The landlord was a scruffy man, and I saved money by giving him a little sweetener and lowering the price by half.

I lived in a poor neighborhood for a week, spending every day in anxiety and hate. I hated Connor, I hated the man who called himself my father, I hated myself more, and at the same time, I was anxious about how I was going to live next.

Now that I had lost all my support and all my resources, it would be difficult for me to have the life I had if I were on my own.

Soon after, a letter carrier knocked on my door and left a letter and left in a hurry.

I looked at the address and it was a law firm. Maybe my life would turn around from this lawyer's letter? I opened it with a prayer in my heart.

It was the divorce papers that Connor had instructed his lawyer to send!

I remembered that he had left me a signed agreement at home last time, but out of anger and resentment, I didn't sign it and left it at Connor's house.

Along with the divorce agreement came a division of property agreement and an opinion from a lawyer. The lawyer's opinion, or rather Connor's opinion, was roughly that seeing as I had seduced the landlord, if I signed the two agreements, I would still get most of Connor's property, and if I didn't, I would file for divorce in court on the grounds of cheating, after which I wouldn't get a penny.

Being able to know my exact address without looking for an agent to rent my house and making such an attractive divorce offer based on my current situation, I was pretty sure that after I left Green's house, Connor started looking for someone to investigate my whereabouts and that someone else might be watching me now in my neighborhood.

It didn't take long for me to figure out how to do that.

I picked up a mirror and walked around while looking at it, and soon I noticed that in the room to the right of my bedroom, there was a flashing silver light that looked like a mirror, and behind it was a dark figure in human form.

I did not rush to go to that house, wait until almost dinner, I picked up the mirror again and walked to the same place to shine. The house was not lit, but a red dot appeared in the afternoon flash, and I soon determined the location of the person watching me.

Because even if Connor had installed cameras in my house, there was no way he would know that I had seduced my landlord, and the most he could tell was that I was not having a good time right now, unless he had someone watching me in the neighborhood.

And I spent the whole day looking in the mirror to find out where the person who was watching me was hiding by looking in the mirror.

After spending the whole night making plans in my mind, I got up before dawn. I took the knife and sneaked out of the house, through the shadow of the corner to the house with the telescope.

When I got to the door, I didn't knock, but started a long wait. Finally, at about eight or nine o'clock, a footstep sounded, and I guessed that someone had come to take over.

I quickly hid in the corner, held my breath, and quietly waited for the owner of the footsteps to arrive.

The footsteps came closer and closer, and then, stopped at the door.

Ding dong! It was the sound of a key being pulled out.

Here's your chance!

I took out my knife and rushed to the man, covering his mouth with one hand and holding the tip of the knife against his neck with the other.

"Don't talk or move! Take me to Connor or I'll take you to God right now!" I whispered in his ear, lowering my voice and threatening.

The man I was holding hostage did not dare to move.

"Drive, take me away!"

The man obediently followed me down the stairs as my hand gripped the knife with slight force.

We walked to his car, I stared at him for a moment, and the moment he pulled out his car keys, I kicked him to the ground, while using the knife to quickly make a shallow cut on his neck, and successfully snatched his car keys.

While he was still on the ground and not getting up, I quickly started the car and drove to Connor's apartment.

Connor's POV

I got up and made a cup of coffee as usual and waited for the bouncer's side to bring me news of Lydia.

Suddenly, there was a sharp knock on the door.

Almost no one knows I live here, the assistants and bodyguards call me if they have any urgent matters, so how could someone knock on the door so early? Could it be ......?

I opened the door, and it was Claire!

"How dare you be so shameless as to find someone to spy on me and find someone to set a trap for me?" Claire pushed me out of the way and rushed into the house and uttered these words.

"Yes, I had someone spy on you, but you slept with the landlord of your own free will, didn't you?" I looked at her mockingly, "If you didn't think that way, how could I have caught you in the act?"

Claire froze, as if she didn't know what words she could use to refute me for a moment.

"Then why did you use this tactic to divorce me?" It took her a long time to ask this question again.

"You still don't know in your heart? Why did you do this to Lydia, when the child in your belly was fine and she was disqualified from being a mother!" Anger made me raise my voice involuntarily.

The question seemed to pierce something in Claire's heart, and she suddenly burst into tears when she rarely cried in front of me.

"Do you think I act like this? You don't know how much I love you!" Claire cried and yelled at the top of her lungs, "How good do you think a biological father who hasn't seen his daughter in 20 years can be to his daughter! If he loved me, he wouldn't have left us alone more than ten years ago and let my mother leave me, and if he loved me, he would have come to me after my mother died and picked me up at the Green house!"

Looking at the person in front of me, who was talking nonsense, I didn't know what she was trying to say to me.

"So what?" I looked at her helplessly and blankly.

"He planned the accident, and saving me was part of his plan this time. You think he kept me alive because of father-daughter love? He just wanted to use me!" Claire's yelled.

"He wants to use you, and you want to be used by him?" I felt a little funny hearing this reason, couldn't I refuse?

"He took naked pictures of me and threatened me! Did you consider my feelings when you asked that? Are you doubting my feelings for you!" Claire looked aggrieved when she uttered these words.

In this situation, she seemed to have no choice. For a moment, my resentment toward her was reduced by a few points.

"Yes, I sent the nude photos of you and Lydia to Hope just to get back at you! Did you ever think about what I was going through while you and Lydia were making out?"

Claire's words were so full of hidden information, I just didn't dare to ask further, I was afraid I would start to feel guilty about her.

"Peter asked me to help him steal your company secrets, and when I didn't agree, he let his men take turns trashing me! Can you imagine these scenes! Do you dare to imagine! Because of you, I was just trampled on!" Finally it was Claire herself who brought the matter to light, her fists clenched and her eyes red, looking like she was caught up in a painful memory, but unwilling to make herself look more vulnerable in my eyes at the moment.

"......"

I didn't know what to say to comfort her, and I knew I owed her an apology, but thinking about what she had done to Lydia, I couldn't bring myself to say "I'm sorry".

Claire's head slowly dropped and she crumpled into a ball on the couch. I had to go over to her and sit down, patting her on the shoulder like a good friend to comfort her.

The gesture seemed to have some effect.

Soon Claire lifted her head and in turn reached out to put her arms around my neck and rested her head on my shoulder.

"Please, can you not abandon me? Just because I have endured so much for you too, just because I still have our baby in my belly ......" Claire pleaded with me while crying.

Her tears wet my clothes, that look very poor, if it is the average man will certainly be moved, will certainly say yes to her, just now I have found my true love, I already have Lydia.

I gently pushed her hands away and uttered the words I had buried in my heart a few minutes before that I was sorry.

Besides these words, I didn't know what else to do to make it up to her.
