Chapter 38
Lydia's POV
Under the careful care of Connor and Ivan, I soon got better and slowly began to walk, and the misfortune that Connor had feared did not happen to me.
I believe that soon I will be able to live a normal life again.
If you ask me now if I regret saving Connor's life, my answer is still the same as my original choice.
Because love a person should love hard, so that later will not regret. This is also the conclusion I came to after more than ten years with Connor.
Soon, I was discharged from the hospital and returned home to my home with Ivan, except that because of Connor's strong dissatisfaction, Ivan had to move out of the house and find another place to live.
Both Connor and Ivan would visit me, but more often than not it was the two of them together, and often it would be the case that Connor would come sniffing around just as Ivan arrived.
Sometimes it's fun to watch them fight with each other, it's like being with them when I was a kid, Connor has dropped his cold mask and become a warm adult, but his domineering personality is still the same as before.
This kind of happiness of three people together always gives me an unreal feeling, as if it is a dream that will soon break.
I asked myself many times why I felt this way, and soon I knew the answer, because Connor was still my brother-in-law, and because Claire was still in London.
This happy time made me feel like I had stolen it from Claire, just as I had during the days when she was missing.
This thought also caused me to gradually alienate Connor, and I no longer allowed him to come to my house.
Although he was puzzled and aggrieved, he did as I told him to do.
With Ivan, I knew I really didn't like him much myself, so I didn't want to give him too much hope either. In our conversations, I always emphasized that he was my best friend, but he still didn't seem to give up on me.
Suddenly one day, I got an email from my mom saying she was coming to Washington to visit me in a few days.
I was overjoyed because it meant that Mom and Dad had forgiven me and that my relationship with them was about to be repaired.
I grabbed Ivan and went to the mall to buy new clothes and makeup, ready to put on some beautiful makeup to welcome Mom and let her know that I was doing well in Washington and didn't need to worry about me.
"The doorbell rang, and it was Mom, who had arrived at the time she had agreed to in her email.
I rushed to the door and saw that she had brought a young man with her.
Out of courtesy, I didn't ask too many questions and invited them into the house.
"This is my youngest daughter Lydia, she is a little more introverted, so she usually talks less." Mom took the lead and introduced me to the mysterious guest.
Then she turned to me, "This is David, Mr. Smith's son, Mr. Smith is your father's new partner."
"Hello." I politely extended my hand to David.
"Hello, beautiful Miss Lydia." David greeted me and then shook my hand, but didn't lower it for a long time.
I decided this was beyond the bounds of social etiquette and pulled my hand out with force.
David, on the other hand, kept looking at me obsessively, making me all over the place.
"This guy is so rude, why would you bring him along." I found a chance to be alone with just my mom and I and whined to her in a low voice.
"You try to get along with him first and see, maybe he's the one you'll marry later." Mom looked at me and replied with a smile.
"What? A blind date? Did you ask my permission?" I was very angry but could only lower my voice for fear of being overheard by David who was in the bathroom.
"And how long do you plan to stay with Connor?" Mom's expression suddenly became serious.
Mom actually knew that Connor had been with me all this time? What else did she know?
"How do you know?" I asked in surprise.
"Oh, I know a lot of things." Mom gave a mocking expression, then she warned me seriously, "I advise you to leave Connor early, even if he is divorced from Claire now, you won't get anywhere with him!"
Connor is divorced? So that's why he's been able to stay in Washington with me all this time?
"When did that happen?" Again, I was surprised.
"That's not for you to worry about, anyway, get along with David. He's the only one in the big London family who doesn't mind you and Connor going over." Speaking of this, Mom's expression looked a little pained.
"I don't want it! Who are you to do this to me!" Not caring whether David would hear our conversation or not, I couldn't restrain my anger anymore.
Although I had really done wrong in this matter with Connor, I couldn't bear the thought of my mom pushing me on someone else like a cheap item being sold. The world is so big, even if this matter is already known in London, it doesn't mean I can't find someone elsewhere who truly accepts my past and truly likes me.
"And what makes you so shameless as to steal Claire's husband! Now the one who made Connor and Claire divorce, who made Claire almost commit suicide, who made Claire cry every day, is you!"
I don't know if it was because the authority of the elders was violated or my mother was upset with my attitude, but she also raised her voice to accuse me, which was so loud that even David, who was in the toilet, could hear it.
David hurried out of the toilet with his pants: "Talk properly, talk properly, there is nothing to quarrel between two mothers and daughters."
Looking at David's funny face with his pants, I couldn't imagine what it would be like to have this man as my husband, and I couldn't accept that my husband would be this kind of person.
As my mother and I were both exchanging glances and preparing to argue, the doorbell rang.
I hurriedly left the door on the pretext of opening it to try to lighten the mood, only to find out that the person visiting me was Connor, which made me feel even more confused.
Connor's POV
Following Lydia's wishes, I promised not to bother her anymore, but my thoughts of her only increased, not decreased.
I had been holding back, holding back from bothering her, until I heard from Ivan that Wendy was coming to Washington to visit Lydia, and I started to sit back.
Because my instincts told me that there was more to it than that. Sure enough, I asked Charles, who was far away in London, to look into it and learned that the Green family had recently had financial problems and wanted to borrow the Smith family's strength to get through this financial crisis.
Charles also told me that this time it was not Hope who was on the plane to Washington with Wendy, but David, the Smiths' foolish son.
Apparently, this time Wendy was bringing David on a blind date.
When I arrived at Lydia's house after a good night's sleep, I was still in the garden when I heard an argument in the house, so it must have been Wendy's arrival.
I ran all the way from the garden to the front door and rang the doorbell.
The look on Lydia's face when she greeted me was not one of joy at being rescued, but rather a heavy one.
I couldn't care less and walked straight into the house.
"It's my fault that Lydia is with me, I'm the one who imprisoned her and didn't let her go out, I hope you and Hope won't blame her for that anymore." I turned to Wendy and frankly admitted my mistake.
Wendy obviously didn't expect me to come, much less that I would say such a thing.
"Although I shouldn't say such things out of respect for my elders, I still want to ask if you and Hope have ever cared for Lydia as much as you cared for Claire? If they had, they wouldn't have let Lydia be held captive by me for a month without knowing about it, and they wouldn't have let this happen. In the end, all of us are to blame."
I was not used to seeing Wendy and Hope betraying their daughter in this way, let alone the fact that it was my beloved Lydia they were betraying, but I had no valid reason to stop them, so I had to shift the blame for this mistake onto them as well.
"As for you, David, it's been a long time. But don't think that just because you Smiths have so much money, you can buy a beautiful daughter back from someone else's family to make you a wife!" I raised my chin and teased David to.
"Connor, what do you mean by that? Don't forget, you're the one who was expelled from the Carter family, so how can you compare yourself to me?" David did not show any weakness either.
"Fine, then you can sleep with the women I've slept with." Based on my previous knowledge of this big fool, I took advantage of his weakness to save face and said.
This worked, only to see David's face changed and changed, and finally did not say a word, slammed the door and left.
Wendy saw David leave, frowned and stomped her feet, a look of anger, also followed the furiously away.
"You, come back to London with me." I said, pointing at Lydia after I had chased away the two annoying people.
"Why should I come with you?" Lydia asked me with her big eyes fluttering.
"Because now you are mine."
After saying that, I approached Lydia's lips and prepared to kiss.
In the process, Lydia had a hint of hesitation, as if she wanted to push me away, but soon, she just sighed and wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed me passionately.
This feeling is so good, even if I am a man, I would like to say that when the person you like happens to also like you, when you and the person you like start a romantic and passionate kiss, connecting each other's hearts, even the air is full of pink bubbles that smell like strawberries.
After the kiss, I hugged Lydia and spun around the house while shouting, "Lydia, I love you so much!"
I wanted all the neighbors to hear my happy voice, and I wanted my joy to be transmitted to heaven so that God could witness this moment with me.
After calming down from the joy of falling in love, I started to feel hesitant again. The person behind hurting Lydia has not been found out yet, is it really good for Lydia to be with her now?
"Connor, what's wrong with you?" Lydia blushed and nudged me.
"Thinking about you." I said sweet words in a rare moment.
When Lydia heard it, she blushed even more and buried her face in my chest shyly.
Lydia's happy look aroused my fighting spirit, my happiness, it should be guarded by myself, I believe that the man behind the curtain will soon be caught!
