Chapter 288: You Really Don't Remember Me?
Harriet's hands paused mid-motion, and she slowly turned to look at the tall, straight figure of Caspian. "What did you say?"
Caspian smiled, "I don't want to put you in a position where you can't explain things to your family."
Harriet looked at him suspiciously. "Aren't you afraid that once you let Elowen go, I'll just walk away?"
"I trust your medical ethics." Caspian looked at her seriously, "From the way you treat my mom, I can tell you're a good person, a genuinely good person, and someone who keeps their word. That's why I'm willing to let Elowen go right now."
Though they hadn't interacted much, he could easily see that Harriet was someone with an exceptionally soft heart.
This kind of person—if you treat her well once, she'll want to repay you ten times over.
If you take one step back, she'll take a hundred steps back.
Harriet didn't hesitate. "If Mr. Romanov is willing, that would be best. It'll save my uncle from worrying."
"Don't worry, I always keep my word. Once Elowen returns home safely, I'll stay and treat Mr. Mason Romanov."
"Good, I'll have someone bring Elowen here right away so you two can reunite."
Two hours later, Harriet finally saw Elowen.
When Elowen was escorted into the room by two bodyguards in black, she was still struggling hard, "Don't touch me! Try me and see what happens!"
The moment she saw Harriet, Elowen was clearly stunned, "What are you doing here?"
"This is the Romanov Manor." Caspian raised his hand, and the two bodyguards immediately released Elowen.
"The Romanov Manor?" Elowen's eyes lit up as she looked around.
Looking at the luxurious room before her, Elowen's eyes flashed with amazement.
Caspian looked at Harriet, "Ms. Getty, the person has been brought before you safe and sound. She's free now and can return home anytime. If needed, I can help her buy a plane ticket."
Harriet was much more polite to Caspian, "Then thank you, Mr. Romanov."
Harriet looked at Elowen, "Uncle Jasper is very worried about you. I'll arrange a flight for you to go home right away."
Elowen composed herself and pouted, "Who said I want to go back?"
Harriet frowned, "What did you say?"
"Are you deaf? Or do you not understand human language?" Elowen crossed her arms, looking at her with disdain, "Weren't you busy making headlines in Emberfall? How do you have time to meddle in my business?"
Harriet said coldly. "Weren't you the one who called your parents, crying and begging them to come save you?"
"I was joking." Elowen said with a smile, "I was just playing around with my darling."
"Elowen, this is a serious matter, not a joke." Harriet said seriously. "You were clearly being held captive, and your phone was taken away. Uncle Jasper was worried about you, that's why I came to bring you back."
"I told you, I was playing around with my darling. Don't you understand?" Elowen said impatiently, "As for my phone, I wanted to break my phone addiction, so I gave it to my darling."
Harriet laughed mockingly. "Elowen, if you can't bear to leave the wealth and luxury here, just say so."
"What are you talking about?"
"Am I wrong?" Harriet stood up, looking at her coldly. "Your so-called darling is Caspian's cousin. He manages the Romanov family's branch company and indeed has endless money."
"He arranged accommodation for you, assigned you a nanny, and gives you money every month, letting you live a rich person's life. It's normal that you don't want to leave this lifestyle."
Elowen gritted her teeth, "You investigated me?"
"I came to save you, of course I had to find out the truth." A cold glint flashed in Harriet's eyes, "But Elowen, you need to know that your behavior is immoral."
"He's a married man. You're interfering in someone else's marriage - you're a homewrecker that everyone despises."
"You have no shame yourself, but do you want your parents to be cursed because of you?"
Elowen's face turned ashen. She raised her hand and clapped, "You, Harriet, think you're so great. You're so high and mighty, yet how can you tolerate the child Quinlan bore for Tristan?"
"When it comes down to it, aren't you just holding on because you can't bear to give up the wealth and luxury Tristan brings you?"
"Harriet, deep down, you and I are the same kind of people. What right do you have to stand on your moral high horse and criticize me? What qualifies you to judge me?"
Harriet was so angry she laughed. "Looks like this trip was unnecessary. For Uncle Jasper's sake, I'll give you one last chance. If you come back home with me right now, I'll arrange a job for you at MediQuest Group. From now on, you work honestly and be a decent person, and we'll let bygones be bygones."
Elowen laughed mockingly, her eyes full of disdain and disgust, "Stop talking to me in that patronizing tone. What is MediQuest Group? You think I'd care about it?"
"Harriet, times have changed. I, Elowen, don't need your condescending charity."
"You want me to go back to Emberfall? Sure, you divorce Tristan, and then let Tristan marry me, and I'll go back."
Harriet almost thought she was hearing things, "Elowen, not only are you shameless, you've lost your mind too?"
"See, I told you you're a hypocrite." Elowen had an expression like she'd seen through everything, "You make yourself sound so noble, but when it comes down to it, you still can't bear to give up your status as Mrs. Lancaster and all that wealth, can you?"
"Don't worry, I don't even want your man. My darling is no worse than Tristan!"
"I get it now. You've become a homewrecker and developed a superiority complex about it." Harriet took out her phone, "I'm calling your parents right now. You can tell them yourself that you're not coming back."
"Who are you to boss around our family affairs?" Elowen glared at her, "I'm warning you, don't call my parents and talk nonsense, or I won't let you off!"
"Fine, I've done what I promised Uncle Jasper. If you won't go back, there's nothing I can do." Harriet sat back down, "From now on, your business has nothing to do with me. I won't meddle anymore."
"You think I want to see you?" Elowen shot back, "Get lost, the farther the better. Best if you never appear in front of me again!"
Harriet looked at Caspian, who was sitting aside watching the show, "Mr. Romanov, send her back to wherever she came from."
Caspian said calmly, "But our deal was for Elowen to return safely to Emberfall."
"You've already delivered Elowen to me safe and sound. It's her own choice not to go back - there's nothing either of us can do about it." Harriet said, "So you've already fulfilled your promise, and I'll keep mine to cure your grandfather. I won't go back on my word."
Caspian nodded, "Alright."
He glanced at the bodyguard, who immediately escorted Elowen away.
Harriet watched Elowen's back as she happily left in her high heels, shaking her head helplessly, "Mr. Romanov, could you give me the surveillance footage from just now?"
"Of course." Caspian guessed her purpose, "With this footage, you can explain things to your uncle."
Harriet crossed her arms and studied him, "You guessed early on that Elowen wouldn't go back, that's why you proactively let her come see me, right?"
"I have no interest in trying to figure out what someone like Elowen is thinking." Caspian said noncommittally, "But with a little thought, it's not hard to guess that she wouldn't give up this wealth and luxury."
Harriet nodded, "She chose this path herself. Whatever the outcome in the future, she'll have to bear it herself. I just feel bad for my uncle. He's an honest, good man. He never imagined his only daughter would turn out like this."
"You're a very filial niece, and that's enough." Caspian looked at her, "Ms. Getty, whoever has you as family is blessed."
Harriet smiled slightly, "I didn't expect Mr. Romanov to be so good at comforting people."
"I'm speaking from the heart."
Harriet quickly sent the video to Jasper.
After watching the video, Jasper covered his face and cried silently, "What a family disgrace! How will I face the Getty family ancestors in the future..."
"Uncle Jasper, don't be too upset." Harriet consoled him. "At least now we can confirm that Elowen is safe and free, and hasn't been harmed at all."
"Elowen is an adult now. She can decide which path to take. Try to accept it."
"You're right. The child has grown up, I can't control her anymore. Even if I wanted to discipline her, it's too late..."
While she was on the phone, there was suddenly a knock at the door.
Harriet got up to open it, and saw Ulysses standing outside. "Why is it you?"
"Why can't it be me?" Ulysses asked back.
"Uncle Jasper, I have something to deal with here. Talk later." Harriet hung up the phone and looked at Ulysses outside the door, "Don't tell me you came looking for me?"
"I came to the Romanov Manor to visit. I just happened to hear you were here, so I came by to see you."
"Mr. Clifford, we're not close enough for this." Harriet frowned, "Besides, you're Quinlan's brother. I don't plan to get friendly with you. Please leave."
"You're trying to chase me away again!" Ulysses quickly pressed against the door to keep her from closing it, "Do you really not remember me?"
"Of course I remember. Didn't I just say? You're Quinlan's brother."
"I'm not talking about that identity." Ulysses looked at her with an aggrieved expression, "You even kissed me, and now you've forgotten. You're so heartless!"
Harriet froze.
"Mr. Clifford, you can't just say things like that." Harriet said seriously, "If my husband hears this, he'll misunderstand."
"I'm telling the truth. Five years ago, by Moonshadow River, I fell into the water."
Harriet frowned, thinking carefully, "That was you?"
"I told you I'm so handsome, you wouldn't forget me!"
Harriet fell silent.
Five years ago, she and Niamh did encounter a man who accidentally fell into Moonshadow River.
She didn't think much of it at the time and jumped right in to save him, then performed first aid and had her assistant give him CPR.
When he woke up, she didn't have time to talk to him - she rushed back to the hotel to change clothes and left directly.
She never imagined that the man from that day would turn out to be Quinlan's brother.
What a small world!
"You remember me now, right!" Ulysses said excitedly, "Harriet, you're my savior. I want to marry you as repayment!"
Harriet: "What?"
"Mr. Clifford, you've misunderstood." Harriet said quickly, "The person who saved you that day wasn't me, it was my assistant!"
"Nonsense!" Ulysses said with certainty, "It was you. I saw you kissing me!"
Harriet: "Mr. Clifford, you really misunderstood. I did pull you out of the river, but my male assistant gave you CPR. Because of propriety between men and women, he did the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation."
"So you admit you saved me?" Ulysses said happily, "Then I want to marry you!"
Harriet rubbed her forehead, "Mr. Clifford, I've long forgotten about this. You should forget it too."
"Forget a life-saving debt? What kind of scum would I be?" Ulysses said seriously, "I must repay you."
"Mr. Clifford is indeed someone who repays kindness. Very admirable." Harriet thought for a moment, "How about this - one million dollars, and we're even."
Ulysses' mouth twitched, "Money is so tacky."
"I'm a tacky person. I like money." Harriet said seriously.
"No way." Ulysses said solemnly, "I must marry you to repay your kindness. You like money? I can give you all my money!"
Harriet: "Mr. Clifford, I have a husband."
"I've investigated. You two didn't marry for love. You married him to bring him good luck." Ulysses said earnestly, trying to persuade her, "Harriet, a girl should marry for love."
