Chapter 186: Please Marry Me
Ian didn't get an answer. Harriet took a phone call and left quickly.
Harriet rushed to the hospital and met Ewan in the VIP ward.
"Harriet, you're here." Ewan grabbed her hand excitedly. "The test results are out. Just like you said, it really is pancreatic cancer! The doctor said it's lucky we caught it early, before it reached the late stage. Harriet, you saved my life!"
Harriet wasn't surprised. "Then you should arrange surgery right away."
"Yes, the doctor said as long as I have the surgery, I'll basically be fine."
Harriet nodded. "It's a blessing that you're okay."
"Harriet, I really don't know how to thank you."
"You're too kind. You donate to Timeless Medicine Clinic every year. This is what I should do."
Harriet talked to the doctor about Ewan's condition before leaving the hospital.
She didn't go back to the clinic or to the Lancaster Manor, but went straight home to Lakeside Gardens.
As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw Tristan leaning against the wall by her door, smoking. There was a pile of cigarette butts on the ground.
Harriet felt like she'd seen this scene before.
A long time ago, he had waited for her like this too.
Back then, her heart and eyes were full of him, and she couldn't resist the impact of this scene at all.
But now, she just felt sad.
Her vision gradually blurred as tears welled up in Harriet's eyes.
Tristan in front of her walked toward her, and the next second, Harriet was held tightly.
The clean, pleasant scent of male hormones hit her face. Harriet felt like it was a lifetime ago.
It turned out that two years wasn't long, but it wasn't short either.
"Harriet." Tristan's voice was low and suppressed. "Let's both let go of the past and start over, okay?"
He thought she had gone to the clinic to see Ian, so he waited for her here.
Harriet closed her eyes, and tears poured out.
Tristan let her go, cupped her face, and wiped away the tears with his thumb. "Don't cry..."
The two of them went inside together.
Harriet sat on the sofa, already calm again.
She lowered her eyes and said softly, "Mr. Jones never says strange things for no reason. He said you had your reasons for not wanting the baby, right?"
Ian only said "if", but she had already guessed.
Tristan asked, "Didn't he tell you the specific reason?"
Harriet shook her head gently.
Tristan carefully said, "Your health was poor at the time, and it wasn't suitable for you to have a baby. If you insisted on having it, it would cause permanent damage to your body."
Harriet pulled at her lips. "I thought it was because you suspected the baby wasn't yours."
"How could that be?" Tristan said. "Harriet, I never doubted that."
Harriet could vaguely guess something. "I can never have children for the rest of my life, can I?"
"Mr. Jones didn't say."
Harriet looked up at him. "So you, Mr. Jones, and Griffin all knew about this. This was a decision you made together, right?"
Tristan didn't deny it. "Harriet, I had no other choice at the time."
Harriet pressed her lips together tightly. "I'm tired. Can you let me be alone for a while?"
Tristan wanted to say something but stopped himself, and finally got up and left.
"Harriet, I'm willing to give you time."
Harriet sat alone for a long time.
When her phone rang, she suddenly came back to herself and realized it was already dark.
Harriet looked down at her phone, picked it up and answered. "Griffin."
"Harriet, have you had dinner?"
"I have something to ask you." Harriet said with difficulty. "I couldn't have that baby because I hurt my body when I saved Tristan years ago, right?"
"Yes." Griffin said. "Harriet, you should tell Tristan."
Harriet's hand holding the phone trembled slightly. She closed her eyes in pain. "It's enough that I bear this alone. Don't tell him."
"Okay."
For several days in a row, Harriet didn't see Tristan again.
She threw herself into work, numbing herself, just like the past two years.
On Saturday night, Harriet was working overtime at the clinic.
Flora suddenly came looking for her. "Harriet, I'm taking you somewhere."
"Where?"
"You'll know when we get there."
Before Harriet could refuse, Flora took her away.
The two of them arrived at a private villa. It looked like a private party was being held there.
Flora pulled Harriet inside, and she immediately spotted a familiar figure.
Xavier was also surprised to see Harriet.
He quickly walked over and said, "What are you doing here?"
"None of your business."
Over the past two years, Harriet had actually seen him quite often in entertainment headlines.
Xavier's career was going smoothly. Despite all the new talent in the entertainment industry, no one could surpass him.
"Harriet, what's with that attitude?" Xavier said unhappily. "I haven't even settled accounts with you about what happened the other day!"
Harriet smiled faintly. "Suit yourself."
She couldn't be bothered with Xavier and was about to find Flora to get some answers when she suddenly saw another rather familiar figure walking toward her.
Xavier also saw Zephyr and asked, "Didn't you say you had something important to announce publicly? Hurry up, stop being mysterious."
Only then did Harriet realize this was Zephyr's party.
"Don't rush." Zephyr raised his voice. "Everyone."
The people around heard his voice and gathered around.
Zephyr smiled warmly. "I invited everyone here today to witness something for me. I once made a bet with someone. I lost, and I accept my loss, so today I'm going to fulfill my bet."
Harriet quickly realized what was happening and was about to stop him, but she saw Zephyr kneel down on one knee in front of her.
Harriet: "What?"
"What's going on?" Xavier looked confused. "Zephyr, what do you mean by kneeling on one knee in front of Harriet?"
Zephyr looked at Harriet. "I lost to her."
"So what?" Xavier's mouth twitched. "That's a marriage proposal position. Don't tell me you don't even know this basic fact?"
"I know." Zephyr pulled out an elegant gift box from his suit pocket and opened it. Inside was a huge diamond ring.
"Harriet." Zephyr looked at Harriet and said very seriously, "My parents are researchers. They've been busy with their careers most of their lives. I was raised by my grandfather. He's the most important person in the world to me."
"If you hadn't noticed his symptoms in time, I think I would have lost him soon. I can't repay your kindness, so I can only repay you with myself."
"Harriet, please marry me. I promise I'll treat you well for the rest of my life!"
Harriet looked confused, finding it hard not to suspect she was hearing things.
Had the world really gone this crazy?
Before Harriet could speak, Xavier got angry first.
"Zephyr, are you crazy or have you lost your memory? Harriet is my sister-in-law!"
"Not anymore." Zephyr said calmly. "Weren't you the one who told me she and Tristan broke up and divorced, and that she even went abroad?"
Xavier was stunned and quickly realized.
"But you still can't propose to her! You're my best friend. What does it mean for you to marry my sister-in-law!"
"It's precisely because we're best friends that you should bless me." Zephyr said seriously. "Xavier, what era is this? Don't be so old-fashioned."
Xavier fell silent.
He was about to pull this crazy Zephyr up from the ground when he suddenly felt a chilling coldness coming from behind.
Xavier turned around and sure enough saw Tristan looking at them with a dark expression.
