Chapter 125 You Are Courting Death
Lark said arrogantly, "Of course we're here for a medical checkup. Thanks to you, my mom suffered a lot in prison. Today you better examine her thoroughly."
Harriet smiled faintly, "Aren't you afraid I'll find out she's not sick at all and doesn't meet the criteria for medical parole, and she'll be sent back to prison?"
"You wouldn't dare!" Lark slammed the table angrily. "Harriet, if you dare do that, I'll kill you. Killing you now would be easier than crushing an ant."
Harriet leaned back calmly in her chair. "Go ahead and try. Worst case, we'll perish together."
"Perish together? You're not worthy!" Lark said smugly. "Harriet, do you really not understand your situation?"
"Really?" Harriet asked with interest. "What's my situation?"
"I already asked Owen. While Tristan has been running the Lancaster Group these years, he does get dividends into his personal account every month, but at most it's only a few billion dollars."
"And all his expenses are deducted from his personal account. With his spending habits, there can't be much left. So Harriet, let me give you some advice - if you don't want to die, keep a low profile."
"But even if you keep a low profile, that little bit of savings won't last two years. Or do you think you can actually make money at this tiny clinic? Your income is nothing!"
Harriet remained calm. "How my husband and I live our lives is none of your business."
"You're still so calm. Is it because Tristan gives you confidence?" Lark laughed. "I heard Tristan has registered a company. Do you think he'll definitely make it big and become that all-powerful Tristan again? Mom, look how naive she is."
Opal couldn't help laughing too. "Harriet, do you think people who anger Owen will have a good ending? Let me tell you, Owen has already put the word out that no one is allowed to work with Tristan, or they'll be going against the Lancaster Group. So even if Tristan registered a company, it'll soon go under due to poor management."
Harriet frowned.
She had thought they could just stay out of each other's way from now on, but she didn't expect Owen had no intention of letting them go.
Looking at all of Emberfall, no one could stand up to the Lancaster Group, let alone Tristan in his current weak position.
"What's wrong, scared now?" Seeing Harriet's distracted look, Lark was quite pleased. "Harriet, don't say I didn't give you a chance. If you kneel down and apologize to me now, maybe I'll let you off."
"Are you dreaming?" Harriet looked up at her again. "If you like people kneeling to you so much, I suggest you just go ahead and die. When you're dead, naturally people will kneel at your funeral."
"How dare you curse me to die!" Lark said angrily. "I think the one who can't wait to die is you!"
Just as Harriet was about to speak, a displeased voice suddenly came from the doorway. "Who do you want to die?"
Everyone in the room looked toward Ian at the door.
Ian was highly respected, and no one dared not show him some respect.
"Mr. Jones." Opal greeted him politely.
Ian walked in, looking at Lark's legs. "When did Ms. Brown find a famous doctor to cure her legs? How come I didn't know about it?"
Lark smiled. "There was no famous doctor. I was just lucky - suddenly I could walk again."
"Really?" Ian smiled faintly. "I don't know if it's because my medical skills are poor or I'm ignorant, but I didn't know damaged nerves could heal themselves. The world is so big, full of wonders."
Afraid of saying something wrong, Lark quickly changed the subject. "Mr. Jones, your student is too much. I came here for treatment, and she dared to humiliate me."
"Harriet is my only student and the successor to this clinic. Whatever mistakes she makes, I'll take responsibility. If Ms. Brown wants to settle accounts, come to me."
Lark smiled awkwardly. "Mr. Jones, you're joking. How could I possibly settle accounts with you?"
"Best if you can't." Ian stared at her. "I know Ms. Brown has latched onto Mr. Owen Lancaster now and thinks she's very important, but let me give you some advice - when people are doing well, it's best to restrain yourself and not offend people everywhere. Otherwise, once you fall, everyone will step on you."
"You just said you'd kill my student. Well, I can tell you that although my medical skills aren't great, I still have connections. Quite a few people in Emberfall owe me favors. If I unite them to oppose Mr. Owen Lancaster, when one whale dies, all things flourish - I think they'd be happy to, especially the Borgia family."
Lark was shocked.
The Borgia family and the Lancaster family had always been rivals. Originally they were evenly matched, but in recent years, because Tristan took over the Lancaster Group, he directly suppressed the Borgia family.
If the Borgia family took the lead and combined other forces to deal with the Lancaster family, Owen might not be able to handle it.
"What are you saying, Mr. Jones? We just came to see Harriet today." Opal quickly smoothed things over. "Lark and Harriet are old acquaintances. They used to bicker all the time. It's nothing. We'll leave now. Goodbye."
With that, Opal pulled Lark away.
Harriet looked at Ian. "Thank you."
"You can't be polite with people like that." Ian said. "I heard about how she drugged you last time trying to make you sleep with Owen. It's despicable!"
"Mr. Jones, I know how to protect myself, and I'm already learning self-defense from Tristan."
"But I can't just stand by and do nothing. I had to give her a warning at least."
That evening, Lark came to Owen's private villa. "Owen, I brought you two bottles of excellent red wine. Tonight we..."
Before Lark could finish, Owen raised his hand and slapped her hard across the face.
Caught off guard and with him hitting so hard, Lark fell to the ground, the wine bottles in her hands shattering on the floor.
Lark's head was buzzing. When she came to her senses, she looked up at him in disbelief. "Why did you hit me!"
"Hitting you is getting off easy!" Owen's snake-like eyes locked onto her face. "You idiot, you actually went to provoke Harriet? Who told you to do that!"
"Harriet?" Lark's eyes widened. "You hit me because of Harriet? Are you crazy! And you said you're not into that bitch!"
"You idiot, you think I didn't touch Harriet before because she's pretty and I couldn't bear to? It's because of Mr. Jones!" Owen loosened his tie irritably. "Today you went to provoke Harriet, and Mr. Jones personally called me, saying no one can touch a hair on his student's head, or he'll fight to the death!"
"Do you know how powerful his connections are? I have to be polite to him. But you went straight to the clinic to cause trouble. I don't think you were causing trouble - you were looking for death!"
Lark stood up and said aggrievedly, "How was I supposed to know Mr. Jones protected Harriet so much!"
"Listen carefully - no matter how much Tristan and I fight, at the end of the day it's Lancaster family business. Outsiders don't dare interfere. But if you offend Mr. Jones and he uses his connections to help Tristan, things won't be so simple!"
Lark quickly grabbed his hand to apologize. "I'm sorry Owen, I know I was wrong. I didn't mean to."
"Get away from me!" Owen shook her off, grabbed his coat and headed out. "You idiot, don't bother me unless it's important!"
Lark chased after him, but Owen had already gotten in his car and driven off.
Harriet called Ryder and confirmed what Lark said was true.
Owen was indeed suppressing Tristan's business at every turn, practically leaving him no way out.
"Mrs. Lancaster, please don't tell Mr. Lancaster I told you. He told me not to say anything."
"I know, don't worry."
Harriet hung up, feeling uneasy.
She worked during the day, and when she came home at night, Tristan was in good spirits.
With such a big problem, he couldn't possibly not be anxious, so he must be putting on a brave face to keep her from worrying.
Lost in thought, Flora's call suddenly came in. "Harriet, I have important news to tell you! About Mr. Lancaster!"
"Tristan?" Harriet was curious. "What news?"
"I heard from Mr. Savoy that there's a big thing happening in Emberfall recently. A super powerful foreign consortium is coming to Emberfall. That newly built skyscraper by the sea was theirs all along. You can see how rich they are!"
"Didn't you say Mr. Lancaster is already setting up a company? This is a big business opportunity. If he can make connections, with Mr. Lancaster's abilities, he'll definitely do great things."
"Really?" Harriet was pleased, then said, "But if it's such a big deal, there must be a lot of people watching it, right?"
"Of course. Nash is counting on this connection to grow his company now that I've taken half his assets. Not just Nash - even the Lancaster family and the Borgia family are in on it. Before they've even officially arrived, everyone's trying every way to find connections."
"I heard the consortium's boss is from Athenia and is coming back to develop here. They'll definitely become a new power in Emberfall. Emberfall is about to see a major reshuffling."
Harriet couldn't help being tempted.
If even Owen wanted to make this connection, you could see how powerful they were. Under the current circumstances of being suppressed by Owen, this was Tristan's best opportunity.
She had to find a way!
"Oh, by the way," Flora continued on the phone, "the skyscraper opens to the public tomorrow. Let's go shopping - maybe we'll be lucky enough to run into this consortium boss!"
"Shopping? Isn't that an office building?"
"You don't know about this - I heard there's a large shopping mall inside with luxury brands everywhere. Items you usually can't get will be available there. We need to go early or everything will be taken!"
Harriet never liked shopping, but not wanting to disappoint Flora, she agreed.
