Chapter 95 The Static Touch

Chapter 95 The Static Touch
I ran. Away from the crowd. Away from the fear. Away from Marcus’s broken body. I did not stop until I reached my shelter. A small hut. Made of wood and mud. Near the edge of the woods. Far from the others.

I slammed the door. Locked it. With a bar. Heavy. Wood.

I leaned against it. Slid down. To the floor. My breath came fast. Hard. Like I had run a mile. Like I was drowning.

I looked at my hands.

They were gray.

Not dirty. Not painted. Gray. Like stone. Like static. Like the void.

Small sparks jumped. Between my fingers. Blue. White. Sharp. They crackled. Loud. In the silence. Zap. Zap. Zap.

I tried to rub them. To wipe the gray away. But it was under the skin. In the blood. In the bone. It felt cold. Numb. Dead.

But it was alive. It pulsed. With the wind. With the mountain. With Damian.

I curled into a ball. On the dirt floor. I closed my eyes. But I could still see the gray. Behind my eyelids. Bright. Flashing.

A knock came. At the door. Soft. Gentle.

"Selena?"

It was Clara.

I did not answer. I held my breath. I pulled my hands close. To my chest. To hide them.

"Selena, please," Clara said. Her voice was weak. Sick. "Let me in."

"No," I whispered. My voice shook. "Go away, Clara. It is not safe."

"Why?" she asked. "Are you hurt?"

"I am dangerous," I said. Tears came. Hot. They hit the gray skin. They sizzled. Like water on hot iron. Steam rose. Thin. White.

Clara was silent. For a moment. Then, footsteps. Fading. Away.

She left. Good. Safe.

I stayed on the floor. For hours. The sun moved. Shadows lengthened. The gray spread. Up my wrists. To my elbows. Slow. Steady. Like ink. Like poison.

I could feel the change. Inside. My heart beat slower. Not human slow. Machine slow. Thump... pause... thump... pause. My thoughts were fuzzy. Static. Noise. I tried to remember Damian’s face. But it flickered. Like a bad signal. Like a dream fading.

I was becoming him. Not the man. The power. The void.

If it reached my heart... I would vanish. Become energy. Become wind. Become nothing.

A shadow fell. Across the door. Under the crack.

Someone was there.

The door opened. The bar lifted. I had not unlocked it. But the wood slid back. Magic. Or will.

Elias stood there. He stepped in. Closed the door. Behind him.

He looked at me. On the floor. Gray hands. Sparking. Crying.

He did not look surprised. He looked sad. Resigned.

"It is faster than I thought," he said. His voice was calm. Low.

"Help me," I begged. I held up my hands. The sparks flew. Close to his face. He did not flinch. "Take it out. Please."

Elias shook his head. Slow. "I cannot take it out. It is part of you now. You opened the channel. You let the void in."

"How do I stop it?" I cried. "How do I stop becoming... this?"

Elias knelt. Beside me. He looked into my eyes. His gold eyes were bright. Serious.

"There is only one way," he said.

"Tell me," I said. Hope. Desperate.

"You must sever the bond," Elias said.

I froze. The sparks stopped. For a second.

"Sever the bond?" I whispered. "With Damian?"

"Yes," Elias said. "The static comes from him. From the anchor. From the connection. If you cut the thread... the flow stops. The gray recedes. You become human again."

"But..." I started. My throat tightened. Pain. Sharp. "If I cut the bond... I forget him."

Elias nodded. "Yes. You forget everything. His name. His face. His love. His sacrifice. He becomes a stranger. A ghost. You will not feel his pain. You will not hear his wind. You will be alone. But you will be alive."

I shook my head. No. Fast. Violent.

"No," I said. "I cannot forget him. He saved us. He holds the world. I love him."

"Love is a luxury," Elias said. His voice was hard. Cold. "Survival is a necessity. If you keep the bond... you vanish. You become static. And then who will lead the pack? Who will fight the Residue? Who will protect Clara?"

He pointed at my gray arms.

"You are dying, Selena. Slowly. Painfully. And when you go... the void takes you. And the pack is left without a leader. Without hope."

I looked at my hands. The gray was at my shoulders now. Creeping. Toward my neck. Toward my heart.

I felt the numbness. Spreading. Into my chest. My heartbeat slowed. Thump... pause...

"If I forget him..." I whispered. "Will he be okay?"

"He is the anchor," Elias said. "He does not need your memory to hold the void. He needs your life to stay human. But you cannot give both. You must choose."

He reached into his coat. Pulled something out.

A dagger.

Small. Sharp. Made of white glass. Clear. Pure. Like the void field. Like the beginning.

It glowed. Faint. Cold.

"This is the Cutter," Elias said. He held it out. To me. "It cuts magic. It cuts bonds. It cuts memory."

I looked at the dagger. It terrified me. More than the gray. More than the death.

"To use it," Elias said. "You must touch the blade to your heart. And think of him. One last time. Then... let go."

I took the dagger. My gray fingers touched the hilt. It did not spark. The glass was neutral. Empty.

It felt heavy. In my hand. Like a stone. Like a sin.

"Forgive me, Damian," I whispered.

Elias stood up. He walked to the door.

"You have until nightfall," he said. "After that... the static reaches your heart. And you are gone."

He opened the door. Sunlight came in. Bright. Harsh.

Then he was gone.

I sat alone. In the dark hut. With the dagger.

And the choice.

Forget him. And live.

Or remember him. And die.

I looked at the blade. It reflected my face. Gray. Sad. Broken.

I raised it. Toward my chest.

My hand shook.

Thump... pause...

The wind blew outside. Soft. Sad.

Selena... it whispered.

I closed my eyes. Tears fell.

And I waited.

For the courage.

To forget.
