Chapter 90 The Empty Space
Chapter 90 The Empty Space
Days passed. Or maybe weeks. Time was different now. It moved with the sun. With the moon. With the rain. Not with clocks. Not with schedules. The world was new. Rough. Unformed. But it was alive.
We built shelters. From wood. From stone. From mud. The pack worked together. Men carried logs. Women wove branches. Children gathered food. Berries. Nuts. Roots. We were tired. Our hands were blistered. Our backs ached. But we were happy. To be alive. To be free.
I helped them. I taught them. How to build a fire. How to find water. How to stay safe. I was not just Selena. I was the leader. The Alpha’s mate. The one who remembered.
But every night... I waited.
I sat by the fire. I looked at the mountain. The peak pulsed. Faint blue light. Like a heartbeat. Like a star.
I waited for Damian.
I told myself he would come. He promised. I will follow.
But he did not come.
The days turned into weeks. The shelters were strong. The fields were planted. The pack was safe. But my heart was empty. A hole. Where he used to be.
Clara tried to comfort me. She sat beside me. By the fire.
"He is coming," she said. Her voice was soft. Hopeful. "He promised."
"I know," I said. But I did not believe it. Not anymore.
Elias watched us. From the edge of the camp. He did not help. He did not build. He just watched. His gold eyes were calm. Distant. He was a guardian. Not a participant.
One evening, the sun set. Red. Orange. Purple. The sky was beautiful. Painted. Real.
Elias walked to me. He stood beside me. On the hill. Overlooking the camp. The fires glowed. Small. Warm. Yellow dots in the dark.
"It is time," Elias said. His voice was low. Serious.
"Time for what?" I asked. I did not look at him. I looked at the mountain.
"To tell you the truth," he said.
I turned. To face him. My heart beat fast. Fear. Dread.
"What truth?" I asked.
Elias looked at the mountain. Then at me. His face was sad. Gentle.
"Damian is not coming back," he said.
The words hit me. Hard. Like a punch. Like a stone.
"No," I whispered. "He promised."
"He could not keep the promise," Elias said. "To save the world... he had to stay. In the core. To hold the void closed. If he leaves... the white returns. The void consumes everything. The pack dies. You die."
I shook my head. Tears came. Hot. Fast. "No. There must be another way."
"There is no other way," Elias said. "He is the anchor. The foundation. He is part of the world now."
"Part of the world?" I cried. "What does that mean?"
Elias pointed. At the sky. At the trees. At the wind.
"He is the sky," Elias said. "He is the wind. He is the earth. He is everywhere. But he is nowhere. He has no body. No face. No voice. He is the spirit of this place."
I fell to my knees. In the grass. The ground was cold. Wet.
"He is gone," I sobbed. "He is really gone."
"No," Elias said. He knelt beside me. "He is here. In everything. Feel the wind? That is his breath. Feel the earth? That is his strength. See the sun? That is his love."
I looked up. At the sky. Dark. Starry. Beautiful.
"I cannot touch him," I cried. "I cannot hug him. I cannot hear him."
"You can feel him," Elias said. "If you listen. If you open your heart."
He stood up. He walked away. Into the dark. Leaving me alone. On the hill.
I stayed there. For a long time. The stars moved. Slow. Across the sky. The wind blew. Soft. Cool.
I closed my eyes. I listened.
To the wind.
It rustled the leaves. It whispered through the grass. It touched my face.
And then... I heard it.
A whisper.
Faint. Soft. Like a dream.
Selena...
My eyes snapped open. I looked around. No one was there. Just the dark. Just the stars.
"Damian?" I whispered.
The wind blew again. Stronger. Warmer. It wrapped around me. Like arms. Like a hug.
I am here, the wind whispered. In the breeze. In the rain. In the light.
Tears fell. But they were not sad tears. They were grateful tears.
He was not gone. He was changed. He was everywhere.
I stood up. I wiped my face. I looked at the mountain. The blue light pulsed. Steady. Strong.
"I hear you," I said. To the wind. To the sky. To the world.
The wind sighed. Soft. Happy.
I love you, it whispered.
"I love you too," I said.
I smiled. Through the tears.
I was alone. On the hill. In the dark.
But I was not lonely.
He was with me. In every breath. In every step. In every heartbeat.
He was the world.
And I was part of it.
I walked down the hill. To the camp. To the pack. To the life we had built.
The fires glowed. Warm. Bright.
Clara looked up. She saw my smile. She smiled back.
"Did you find him?" she asked.
"Yes," I said. "He is here."
She looked around. Confused. "Where?"
"Everywhere," I said.
I sat by the fire. I felt the warmth. On my skin. In my soul.
The arc was over. The war was won. The void was closed.
But the story continued.
Not with a hero. But with a memory. With a ghost. With love.
I looked at the stars. They twinkled. Like eyes. Like blue eyes.
Damian was watching.
Always.
And I was living.
For him.
For us.
For the new world.
The end of the beginning.
The start of the rest.
I closed my eyes. And I slept.
With the wind in my hair.
And love in my heart.
Forever.
