Chapter 95
Wendy still stood in front of me, tears in her eyes, looking at me pitifully.
But I felt no sympathy in my heart, only anger.
Back then, when Wendy's staged accident went wrong, she threatened me and asked me to leave Jason, or else she'd make sure Jason went to prison.
At that time, I didn't know Jason's real identity. I didn't want him to lose his bright future, so I had no choice but to find an excuse to break up with him.
Now, she just stood in front of me like this, saying sorry and hoping I could forgive her.
Could the pain and grievances I suffered over the past five years be resolved so easily?
"I won't forgive you," I said firmly, unable to hide the hatred in my words.
Wendy's eyes widened slightly, as if she hadn't expected me to be so heartless.
She opened her mouth to say something more, but Jason asked coldly, "Why does she need to apologize to Sue?"
As soon as he said this, the whole place fell deathly silent.
Wendy's face turned pale. Not daring to look at Jason, she fled in panic.
Only Michael remained standing there, awkwardly and carefully explaining, "Wendy... back then... she was immature, liked you, and wanted Ms. Wilson to break up with you..."
Jason looked at me in shock, asking in disbelief, "This happened? Why didn't you ever tell me?"
I lowered my head, avoiding his gaze, my tone calmer than ever before, "It's all in the past. Nothing worth talking about."
Back then, I didn't want his future to be affected, and he didn't want to tell me his real identity.
Since it already happened, so be it.
I checked the time and interrupted Jason, saying, "I need to get back to work. I'll be going now."
Walking out of the restaurant, I finally let out a long breath of relief.
I drove back to the office.
Inside the restaurant, Jason's face was dark as he stared at Michael. "Tell me, what exactly happened back then?"
Michael shuddered all over, his face pale as he said, "Wendy was young at the time. The project that had the accident was originally planned by Wendy. Her intention was just to use it to threaten Ms. Wilson to leave you. But she didn't expect the accident to happen and the project to shut down..."
Jason recalled that he had indeed been working on that project with Michael.
He was in charge of the project, so he would have had to take responsibility if something went wrong.
So Sue didn't want to ruin his future, which was why she chose to leave on her own.
Jason's heart filled with countless regrets.
If he hadn't hidden his identity back then, Sue wouldn't have been threatened by Wendy into breaking up with him.
They wouldn't have been separated for five years, and Sue wouldn't have raised Jessica alone, living a hard life!
Jason sat in the car for a while, then returned to Old Cooper Mansion.
Grandma Cooper was arranging flowers in the living room. Hearing the noise, she turned her head, a flash of surprise in her eyes.
"Jason, why are you back now?"
"Grandma..."
Jason's eyes were complicated as he said, "I made a huge mistake. Now I know I was wrong, but I don't know if I still have a chance to make up for it."
Grandma Cooper narrowed her eyes slightly, immediately understanding.
"About you and Sue?"
"Yeah..."
Jason told Grandma Cooper the reason for their breakup.
Grandma Cooper nodded repeatedly. "I told you so. The first time I saw Sue, I knew she wasn't the type to break up with you for money."
Jason fell silent.
Grandma Cooper knew what he was thinking. She sighed and said, "There are still good women in this world. Not everyone is like your mother. Don't judge everyone based on one person."
"Grandma, what should I do now?" Jason asked. "I don't even know how to face Sue now... It's all my fault that she suffered so much."
He lowered his head and said regretfully, "If I hadn't hidden my identity back then, Sue wouldn't have lived such a hard life because of me. It's all my fault. Why didn't I trust her sooner?"
Grandma Cooper answered, "If you did something wrong, you need to make up for it and apologize. What's the point of saying all this to me? Go apologize to Sue yourself!"
With that, Grandma Cooper ignored Jason and left.
Thomas happened to be coming down from upstairs.
He was wearing a sharp suit, and even his hair was perfectly styled.
Seeing he was about to leave, Grandma Cooper stopped him. "Where are you going?"
"To pick up Jessica from school!" Thomas's tone was full of excitement and eagerness.
Grandma Cooper checked the time. "It's only two o'clock. Jessica doesn't get out until after four."
"What if there's traffic when school's about to let out? I'm leaving now to make sure Jessica sees me the moment she walks out!" Thomas said this with great pride.
"That won't do. You're making me look bad!" Grandma Cooper immediately became unhappy.
"I just want to be good to Jessica," Thomas replied.
Jason had been feeling down, but hearing them bicker, he couldn't help asking, "Dad, aren't you going to work today?"
Thomas glanced at him and said, "You're not going to work, so why should I?"
Jason was speechless.
Thomas and Grandma Cooper exchanged glances.
Thomas tentatively asked, "How about... we go together now?"
"Fine. I've got nothing to do at home anyway. Might as well go wait for Jessica to get out of school." Grandma Cooper agreed immediately.
They got in the car together, no one paying attention to Jason's gloomy mood.
Near the end of the workday, I received a call from Grandma Cooper.
"We picked up Jessica. We're eating out today, and we'll bring her back later."
"Okay," I replied.
Since Jessica wasn't eating at home tonight, I didn't really feel like cooking either.
I bought some instant noodles from the supermarket downstairs, and when I got home, I boiled some hot water and made them right away.
While waiting for the noodles to cook, I leaned on the sofa, turned on the TV, and searched for a show to watch.
Soon, the smell of instant noodles filled the entire room.
I brought the noodles to the living room, sat down at the coffee table to eat them while watching TV.
After Jessica was born, my entire life had been filled with making money and taking care of Jessica.
This kind of leisure time just for myself was rare.
Just as I was fully enjoying myself, there was a knock at the door.
I put down my chopsticks and got up to answer it.
Jason stood outside the door, asking quietly, "Can I come in?"
I thought I must have heard wrong.
Every time Jason came into my home, it was like he was entering his own house. This was the first time I'd heard him ask so politely.
I didn't say anything, just turned around and sat back down on the sofa.
Jason said nothing, changed his shoes, and followed me in.
