Chapter 40

Chapter 40

Terry's face was full of anger as his eyes swept over Brian and me.

Brian's grip loosened a bit, and I immediately seized the chance to pull my hand back, respectfully calling out, "Mr. Ethan."

Terry stared at me intently, let out a cold snort, then looked at Brian and commanded loudly, "Come inside with me!"

Brian gave me a long look before following Terry away.

The office door closed, and a stack of documents was thrown hard at Brian.

Terry sat in his executive chair, his face dark, and slammed his hand on the desk. "I don't care how many women you've had before, but you cannot like Sue!"

"Why?" Brian raised his head, his eyes stubbornly meeting Terry's.

Terry angrily shot back, "Why? She's Jason's woman!"

"Don't you know that DT Corp's biggest partner right now is Glacier Corp? If you offend Jason, the entire company will suffer. And you have the nerve to ask me why?!"

Brian pulled his lips into a rather sarcastic smile and said coldly, "Sue is single now. She's not married to Jason, not dating him. How is she his woman? I just like her. What's wrong with that?"

"You bastard! Are you trying to rebel?!" Terry grabbed an ashtray, originally aiming for Brian's head, but ended up smashing it hard at his feet.

The ashtray shattered on the floor, the glass reflecting many images of Brian's stubborn face.

Terry's chest heaved with anger as he stared at Brian. "I don't care about the women you like, play around however you want, but you cannot like Sue."

Brian clenched his hands into fists and said heavily, "I'm serious. I want to marry her."

"Shut up!" Terry shouted.

His eyes were full of anger and disappointment. "She's an unmarried woman with a child, so cheap, so shameless. Is she worth sacrificing the entire DT Corp to offend Jason? If your head isn't clear, then get out of DT Corp!"

"She's not that kind of person." Brian's single sentence completely ignited Terry's fury.

"Get out!"

Brian said nothing more and strode out of the office.

Terry was so angry that he swept all the documents on his desk onto the floor, his eyes cold.

He absolutely could not let Brian get involved with Sue.

DT Corp could not afford to offend Jason.

I had no idea such an intense argument had erupted in the office.

After Brian was called away by Terry, I went back to work.

But thinking about Brian's strange behavior today, my work efficiency remained low.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Brian come out of the office.

I pretended not to notice, not wanting to get involved.

But Brian walked straight to my desk.

He stood there silently. After thinking for a moment, I took the initiative to look up and ask, "Mr. Ethan, did Mr. Terry misunderstand something?"

Brian remained silent. He turned and went back to his office.

Soon he came out again, placing a lunch in front of me.

I recognized it as the lunch David had ordered for him.

"Eat before you work," Brian said.

I quickly shook my head. "Mr. Ethan, I can't eat this. It's your lunch. I'll go eat after I finish the work here."

"Just eat it. It's only lunch." Today's Brian was surprisingly insistent.

I looked at him, confused.

The usual Brian wasn't someone who would force things on people like this.

Brian said, "You need to get used to it."

I was even more puzzled. Get used to what? I was already very uncomfortable with how he was acting now!

I sighed helplessly and pushed the lunch back again. "Mr. Ethan, you should take it back."

Brian didn't touch the lunch. He just stared straight at me and said coldly, "Let's have dinner together tonight. Bring Jessica too."

What was wrong with him? Everything he said and did was so weird.

I made up an excuse to refuse. "Sorry, Mr. Ethan, I already made plans to have dinner with a friend today."

I didn't have a habit of eating with my boss after work. It would be bad if people misunderstood and thought I had something going on with my boss.

I thought Brian would leave, but instead he said, "Then the day after tomorrow. We're going to be family sooner or later anyway. It's a good time for me and Jessica to spend more time together, and let the child get used to it too."

I was so shocked by Brian's words that my jaw dropped! Had he gone crazy? Or did I not wake up properly and was hallucinating at work?

"Mr. Ethan, you...?"

"Sue Wilson." Brian suddenly called my name very seriously. "Mr. Ethan, I know Mr. Terry scolded you, and you're in a bad mood. But calm down first. I happen to be hungry, so I'm going to eat now!" I finished speaking at lightning speed and lifted my foot to run.

Brian blocked my way, his eyes determined. "I'm very calm right now, more calm than I've ever been."

"Sue, I admit it. I've fallen for you. Before Jason showed up, I kept thinking I'd just take it slow. But I can't hold back anymore. If I keep being slow, I'm afraid I'll never get to be with you in this lifetime."

He stepped forward, trying to take my hand. "You can seriously consider it. We've been working together for so long, you're the only person I trust. You should know me pretty well, too. Am I really not worth spending your life with?"

I kept backing away to avoid Brian's hand, my lower back hitting the edge of the desk, making me wince in pain.

"Mr. Ethan, please stop joking with me! This joke isn't funny at all!"

What could be more terrifying than being confessed to by your boss while seriously working at the company?!

Maybe my resistance hurt Brian.

A flash of hurt crossed his eyes. His outstretched hand froze in mid-air for a moment before slowly withdrawing.

Brian went back to his office and didn't come out all afternoon.

He had David bring me a tube of pain relief cream for swelling.

The cream just sat there on my desk. I didn't even dare look at it.

As quitting time approached, I didn't even bother tidying my desk. I just grabbed my bag and ran out, afraid Brian would catch me.

Driving home, I kept replaying Brian's words in my mind.

He'd gone crazy! He must have gone crazy!

Hadn't we always just had a boss-employee relationship?

Why suddenly confess?

He must be mentally unstable from not having a woman around for so long, right?

Should I find a woman to send to Brian?

Would that make him normal again?

Wait, where would I even find a woman?!

My thoughts were all over the place. When I got out of the car, I didn't even notice the person waiting in front of me and bumped right into him.

"Sorry!" I apologized instinctively, then looked up and unexpectedly met Jason's probing gaze.

"What's wrong with you today? You seem distracted."

I shook my head, not daring to say.

The last time when Brian was drunk, and I helped him, Jason nearly broke his fingers.

If Jason found out Brian confessed to me today, wouldn't he just bury him alive?

Jason's eyes darkened as he reached out and pinched my face. "You're not being good."
