Chapter 31
Monday, back to work.
I ran into Brian.
Although Brian's hand looked fine on the surface, it was clearly very stiff. He even had trouble pouring water.
Feeling guilty, I kept finding excuses to go to Brian's office to make tea and pour water for him.
When I filled his cup for the third time, Brian stopped me with an amused expression. "Okay, Ms. Wilson, you really don't need to do this. It's not your fault."
I shook my head and insisted, "No, I got you hurt, so now I need to make it up to you."
"Really?" Brian raised an eyebrow.
I nodded firmly.
"Then marry me." That one sentence made my whole body freeze.
Before I could look up at Brian's expression, I heard him add, "Haha, just kidding."
Only then did I relax. I looked up into Brian's eyes, studying him carefully.
After confirming Brian was acting normal, I said softly, "Mr. Ethan, that joke wasn't really funny."
It scared me so much that I was already thinking about how to write my resignation letter.
Brian propped his chin on his good hand, looking at me lazily. "The way you say that makes it sound like marrying me would be beneath you. Even though I'm a bastard child of the Ethan family, I'm still a CEO, aren't I?"
I kept my expression calm and replied softly, "That's not the same thing."
Brian paused, then waved his hand to dismiss me.
At noon, Brian left the office for something.
Before I could feel relieved, Mr. Terry Ethan called me over in the afternoon.
"Ms. Wilson, deliver these documents to Glacier Corp."
"Yes, Mr. Ethan."
Even though I didn't want to go, I couldn't refuse my boss's order.
I drove to the underground parking garage, and as soon as I took the elevator up, I looked up and saw Jason leaving Glacier Corp side by side with a woman.
The woman beside him was beautiful, gentle, and elegant, the kind that immediately drew your attention.
"Miss Brown has such class. Just standing in front of me, I don't even dare breathe, afraid I'll disturb her."
"I heard Miss Brown is Mr. Cooper's ideal woman. When Miss Brown went abroad to study, it was Mr. Cooper who helped her."
"Oh my god, Mr. Cooper has rejected so many women all these years. He must have been waiting for Miss Brown!"
The receptionists gossiped excitedly.
I walked over calmly and placed the documents in front of them. "Please give these documents to Mr. Cooper."
Having been here several times, the receptionists already recognized me.
They exchanged glances and were about to call out to me, but I strode away from Glacier Corp.
After work, I went home.
When I got to my door, I saw someone unexpected.
"What are you doing here?" I was a bit surprised.
"You came to the office today. Why didn't you bring the documents upstairs?" Jason asked back.
He seemed to have been waiting here for a while.
I didn't understand why he was asking this. It wasn't important anyway.
"The documents were for you, but you weren't at the office, so I left them with the receptionist," I said.
"How did you know I wasn't at the office?" Jason raised an eyebrow.
"I saw you go out with another woman," I recalled in my mind the image of him standing with that Miss Brown.
They looked good together.
But Jason acted as if he'd heard something amusing, and pleasure spread across his face.
He leaned closer to me, his tone certain. "You're jealous."
"I'm not." I denied it without hesitation.
"If you're not jealous, why didn't you bring the documents up?" Jason didn't even wait for my answer.
He looked at me deeply and said, "Sue, just admit it. You can't let me go either. If that's the case, why can't we get back together?"
My heart started racing uncontrollably again.
But I forced myself to hold it back and said, "What's past is past. You don't need to keep dwelling on it."
When we reunited, he was the one who said he looked down on me.
He hated me for abandoning him to find a rich man.
Now he's chasing after me to get back together. Was he trying to play with my feelings?
The smile on Jason's handsome face froze for a moment, his voice dropping. "I have money now, and you still won't be with me?"
So he thought all I want was money?
My heart felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible hand, making it hard to breathe.
I lowered my head, hiding the hurt in my eyes.
My avoidance clearly made Jason misunderstand.
He said through gritted teeth, "Why are you rejecting me again? Because of Brian? Don't tell me you really want to marry him?"
Hearing his questions one after another, I just felt an indescribable exhaustion wash over me.
I took a deep breath and sighed. "Mr. Cooper, since your lover has come back, why do you keep pestering me?"
"I don't have a lover." Jason frowned and denied it.
He seemed to realize something, and his gloomy expression instantly cleared. "You're jealous."
"I'm not!" I immediately protested.
"You are jealous. You care that there are other women around me." Jason reached out to pull me, but I stepped back to avoid him.
His brow furrowed tightly, his tone full of confusion. "I have money now, so why are you still not satisfied?"
I never imagined that in Jason's mind, I was a woman who only cared about money.
"Sue, what exactly do you want?" Jason's words completely ignited my sense of grievance.
I suddenly looked up, my eyes red, staring at him hard. "Jason, do you think this is fun? Five years ago, you hid your identity and got together with me. Since I didn't pass your test, we should have separated completely, right? You disappeared for five whole years! Now you suddenly appear, disrupting my peaceful life, and saying you want to get back together."
I laughed lightly. "What's so good about being with a material woman like me? Sorry! You're out of my league!"
"Sue, calm down." Jason looked at me, his tone softening bit by bit.
He looked at me somewhat pitifully, his words earnest. "I know hiding my identity back then was wrong. I apologize. But every word I'm saying now is sincere. I want to get back together with you."
"Let's just forget it." I bit my lower lip, holding back the surging emotions.
He disappeared when he wanted to, and now wants to get back together when he wants to. What does he take me for?
After saying that, I stopped looking at Jason and went straight home, shutting Jason outside the door.
Jessica heard the noise and carefully poked her head out of the bedroom.
Facing my daughter, I forced myself to perk up and put on a smile.
"Jessica must be starving. Mommy will make you dinner."
"I'll help Mommy!" Jessica volunteered.
I didn't want to dampen the child's spirits, so I agreed. "Okay."
On the other side, after Jason left my place, he ran into Victoria, who had been looking for him.
Victoria was wearing a white dress, standing not far away, worry written all over her face. "Jason, did you leave me halfway just to come here?"
Jason frowned and said, "It's none of your business."
He irritably got in his car, stepped on the gas, and the Alfa instantly shot forward, leaving Victoria far behind.
