Chapter 209
Jason lifted the covers and slipped in, pulling me into his arms in one smooth motion.
"How could I not? Sleeping with my wife is my duty as a husband, and with me here, you'll definitely sleep better."
I wasn't falling for his sweet talk at all. I turned over and wriggled out of his embrace.
"I don't believe you. Every time you sleep with me, I wake up with a sore back and terrible sleep quality."
Jason immediately stuck to me again.
"Honey, trust me, tonight will be different."
"No way, get off!"
I tried to roll to the edge of the bed.
Jason stretched out his long arm and pulled me right back.
He buried his face in my neck, "Honey, say that again."
"What?"
I didn't catch on.
"Get off!"
Jason pinched his voice into a higher pitch to mimic me.
My eyes widened, "Jason, you're so annoying!"
Jason nuzzled my neck, "Honey, just say it once more. I want to hear it."
"Get lost!"
"That's fine too. I love hearing anything that comes out of my wife's mouth."
Great, I'd run into a real scoundrel.
I shut my mouth, afraid Jason would say something even more outrageous.
But clearly I'd underestimated how shameless Jason could be.
He held me tight in his arms and took a deep breath against my skin.
"Honey, you smell so good."
I was speechless, "We use the same body wash. We smell the same. You could just smell yourself."
"No, it's different. You smell way better. I can't get enough. Oh no, honey, you must be making yourself all soft and sweet on purpose, right? Let me kiss you."
Jason leaned down to find my lips.
I dodged with a laugh, then suddenly felt a light smack on my butt.
"Be good, stop moving."
My eyes widened. He spanked me!
I had to get him back!
My gaze landed on Jason's sexy Adam's apple, and I leaned up and bit it.
His breathing grew heavier, his eyes darkening.
"Honey, you started this. Get ready for your punishment."
"Get off!"
The next morning, unsurprisingly, I didn't get up.
By the time I woke up, it was almost noon.
Supporting my aching back as I got out of bed, I cursed internally.
If I ever believe Jason again, I'm an idiot!
The house was empty.
After dropping Jessica off at kindergarten, Jason had gone to the office.
I made myself a simple bowl of noodles with an egg for lunch.
In the afternoon, I checked on the companies I'd sent my resume to. Still no responses.
I sighed helplessly and carefully selected several more companies on the job site, sending out my resume.
Surely at least one company would hire me, right?
I just wanted to find a job on my own!
I kept at it until it was almost time to pick up Jessica, then drove to get her.
"Mommy!"
Jessica climbed into the car by herself and buckled her seatbelt.
I noticed she looked worried and was a bit surprised.
"What's wrong, sweetie? You look like something's bothering you."
Jessica sighed and shook her head like a little adult.
"This morning I saw Daddy had a red mark on his neck. Daddy said a cat bit him. I told Daddy to go to the hospital for a shot, but I don't know if he went."
"I read in a book that if an animal bites you, you have to get a shot!"
Jessica spoke so seriously, but I was dying of embarrassment.
We didn't have a cat at home.
That red mark on Jason's neck was clearly from me biting him.
This little girl worried too much.
I cleared my throat and coughed, "Daddy's an adult. He knows what to do."
But Jessica shook her head, "No, Mommy. The teacher said families should care for each other. Daddy got hurt so we should be concerned. Call Daddy later and ask if he went to the hospital."
I cursed Jason up and down in my head and nodded halfheartedly, "Okay, I'll call when we get home."
The days passed sweetly and warmly.
With Saturday approaching, I thought about how the weather was getting warmer and decided to have a family barbecue in the backyard.
I could invite Lily and Ryan too, and see what was going on with those two.
Friday night, I prepared all the ingredients ahead of time.
Jason came into the kitchen and naturally wrapped his arms around my waist from behind.
"Honey, stop. It's bedtime."
I didn't look up, "Just a bit more. Going to bed a little late won't hurt."
"No way. At night, you're mine."
Jason dominantly took the ingredients from my hands, quickly rinsed them, and put them in the fridge.
I looked at him helplessly and warned, "Jason, don't get too excited. We have to get up early tomorrow."
"I know, I know. Don't you trust me, honey?"
Jason scooped me up and hurried upstairs.
Looking at him like this, I trusted him even less!
I could trust him with everything else, but not this!
I'd just gotten out of the shower when I looked up to see Jason half-undressed, lounging on the bed and giving me bedroom eyes.
Before the mood could build, my phone rang.
Jason frowned, clearly displeased, but didn't say anything.
I smiled and answered, "Lily..."
A minute later, my smile completely froze and cracked.
After hanging up, I frowned, "Honey, get dressed. We need to go to the hospital now."
"What happened?"
Jason was confused but did as I said.
I quickly changed too, my voice worried and complicated, "Something happened to Lily. She's at the hospital unconscious. Ryan called me from her phone."
Late at night, in the hospital corridor, Jason and I stood side by side. Not far away was Richard, who'd rushed over after hearing the news.
Soon, Ryan came out.
I was anxious and quickly asked, "How's Lily? Is she okay?"
Ryan's face was full of exhaustion, but he nodded, "The doctor checked her. She's not injured, just frightened. They gave her a sedative at the hospital. She's asleep now."
Hearing that Lily was mostly fine, I finally relaxed.
"Thank goodness."
Jason patted my shoulder to comfort me.
He looked at Ryan, "My people caught those two thugs. They confessed everything."
Ryan's fingers crackled as he clenched them. His words came through gritted teeth, "Who did it?"
Jason said a name, "Barry Blair."
"Him?"
"You know him?"
Ryan nodded, "Lily didn't have any inspiration recently, so she went out to do part-time work. Said she wanted real-life experience. Barry was the owner of one of the shops where Lily worked. I could tell he was eyeing her, but Lily only worked there one day before leaving. I didn't think he'd still be watching her."
Ryan's face was full of regret.
Jason nodded and continued, "My people also found that Barry's been in contact with Rowan recently. The two families have some connection."
After thinking for a moment, I added, "Rowan is Chris's fiancée."
