Chapter 149
They said Jason should take Jessica, but since I didn't have to work, I naturally went along with Jessica.
On the way there, Jessica nervously gripped my hand, her eyes occasionally drifting to Jason.
Jason drove with a relaxed expression.
It hurt to watch, but I knew nothing I said right now would help.
When we arrived at the testing facility and the staff left after collecting samples, Jessica finally couldn't help asking me, "Mom, when will we get the results?"
Jason pinched her cheek, "This afternoon. But Jessica, you don't need to be so nervous. You're definitely Dad's child."
Jessica blinked, confused.
Jason glanced at me smugly and hummed proudly, "Because your mom has only been with me."
This man was getting more and more full of himself.
After leaving the testing facility, I quickly claimed the driver's seat and held out my hand to Jason.
Jason reluctantly handed over the car keys and obediently got in the passenger seat.
I hit the gas and drove straight to Glacier Corp.
When Jason tried to chat with me on the way, I couldn't be bothered to respond.
I didn't want to talk to someone so full of themselves—worried I might catch it.
The car came to a smooth stop at Glacier Corp.
I turned to look at Jason, using my eyes to signal him to get out.
Jason opened the car door and turned back, looking at me like he wanted to say something but hesitated.
His lips moved, but he couldn't help saying, "Sue, I'll leave work on time tonight."
"Got it."
I acknowledged him, but under his expectant gaze, I didn't say anything more.
Jason got out of the car looking disappointed.
He wanted to say something else, but I'd already hit the gas and driven off.
Jessica, sitting in her car seat, turned to look back several times.
"Mom, Dad's still standing there without moving. He looks like a stone statue waiting for his wife!"
I couldn't help it—I burst out laughing.
"Where did you learn that?"
"From watching TV dramas with you, Mom. That's what they said in the show."
I smiled helplessly, "Alright, alright. Jessica's vocabulary is getting bigger and bigger."
But this lighthearted atmosphere only lasted a little while before Jessica became gloomy again.
She kept her head down, picking at her fingers.
This was something she only did when she was nervous.
I thought for a moment and asked, "Jessica, how about Mom takes you to the amusement park?"
Jessica shook her head.
"The aquarium?"
Jessica sighed.
"Let Mom think... the children's playground?"
Jessica drooped her head.
Seeing Jessica so listless broke my heart.
"How about this—if Jessica doesn't have anywhere she wants to go, can you come with Mom to the supermarket to shop?"
I asked tentatively.
This time Jessica finally nodded, though her expression still looked somewhat reluctant.
I took Jessica to the supermarket.
Whatever Jessica looked at for more than a moment, I put in the shopping cart.
By the time we left the supermarket, after checking out, we were carrying three full bags.
Jessica thoughtfully helped me carry one bag.
After stuffing everything in the trunk, I crouched in front of Jessica, "Thank you for helping Mom today, Jessica. Want to go get McDonald's?"
Jessica's eyes lit up, "Can we?"
Usually I didn't like letting her eat fried food.
But this was a special situation that called for special measures.
I nodded, "Of course."
I took Jessica to a burger place in a nearby mall.
When she got her fried chicken leg, Jessica finally seemed happier.
After thinking for a long time, she hesitantly asked me, "Mom, could the test results show something different? Like... what if I'm not Dad's child?"
I felt both heartbroken and helpless, "So you've been worrying about this the whole time?"
"Yes, I'm scared the test results will say I'm not Dad's child."
Jessica nodded slowly.
I answered her with complete certainty, "If that really happened, it would only mean the testing facility's machines were broken. Baby, don't you trust Mom?"
"I trust Mom."
Jessica nodded hard, then couldn't help asking again, "So when will the test results come out!"
"This afternoon. Don't worry."
Under Jessica's eager anticipation, afternoon finally arrived.
I immediately took Jessica to the testing facility to get the results.
I handed the test report to Jessica, "See for yourself."
Jessica's listless expression instantly became excited the moment she saw the results.
"Mom, Mom! Great! I am Dad's child!"
Jessica jumped up and down with joy.
I hugged her and kissed her, "To celebrate, let's go out this afternoon! You pick the place!"
Jessica looked at me seriously, then shook her head, "Mom, you forgot—I have class this afternoon."
I really had forgotten.
Jessica was very busy now, with different tutoring classes every day.
Because Jason had hired so many tutors and the schedule was so packed, Jessica hadn't been to kindergarten in a long time.
The kindergarten teacher had even contacted me about it.
The teacher's tone was quite helpless, "It's not good for Jessica to keep missing kindergarten. The other kids in class barely recognize Jessica anymore."
She put it tactfully, but I knew the teacher was concerned because Jessica's constant absences were affecting the class attendance rate.
But Jessica really didn't like kindergarten, and now that she had better options, I wasn't going to make Jessica do something she didn't like.
So I brushed off the teacher and didn't plan to send Jessica to kindergarten.
Worst case, we'd just withdraw her.
Jessica carefully tucked the test report into her little backpack.
After bringing the child home, she immediately ran upstairs to the study.
I followed and saw Jessica trying to figure out how to use the printer.
She'd never used it before, so I was a bit surprised, "Jessica, you know this machine?"
"Yes! My teacher used one. She said it's called a printer!"
Jessica nodded.
She looked at me, "But Jessica doesn't know how to use it. Mom, can you help Jessica print this!"
She gave me the test results.
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but I didn't want to dampen the child's enthusiasm, so I asked, "Sure, how many copies?"
"One hundred!"
Jessica's voice was loud.
To a child her age, one hundred was a very big number.
Jessica proudly puffed out her chest, "From now on, if anyone doubts I'm Dad's child, I'll slap this in their face! Make them shut up!"
"Good, Mom supports you."
One hundred copies of the test report made a thick, heavy stack.
But Jessica didn't think it was too thick. She happily carried the reports off to class.
I sat down in the study and, after thinking about it, sent Jason a message:
Sue: [The test results are out.]
Jason: [Okay.]
After waiting a moment without a follow-up, I couldn't help asking.
Sue: [Aren't you going to ask about the results?]
Jason sent a cute emoji and added:
Jason: [Do I need to ask?]
I couldn't help rolling my eyes hard.
So full of himself!
How could anyone be this full of themselves!
I couldn't be bothered anymore and exited the chat.
But two minutes later, Jason's call came through.
"Sue."
His voice was low and magnetic, strangely alluring.
"I miss you."
