Chapter 109
Kelly stuck out her tongue carefully, not daring to ask more questions, and waved goodbye to me.
Jason stuffed the sports car keys into my hand and asked, "Sue, I've been drinking tonight. Can you drive?"
I didn't really have any other choice now.
Taking the keys, I sat in the driver's seat of the silver sports car.
Although I'd ridden in it several times, this was my first time driving it.
Sitting in the driver's seat, I couldn't help feeling a bit nervous.
"You're nervous?" Jason leaned back in the passenger seat, tilting his head to look at me.
When he asked like that, I didn't want to admit it.
"What's there to be nervous about? It's just driving. I drive my own car plenty!"
But I was still nervous inside.
Just because this car was so expensive - even the compensation would bankrupt me!
As if seeing through my thoughts, Jason smiled at me, "Don't worry, even if you scratch or bump it, I won't make you pay."
I turned my head, stared at Jason for a while, and said angrily, "My driving skills are pretty good. Nothing will happen!"
"Alright, I'll wait and see." Jason nodded and buckled his seatbelt.
I started the car.
The moment the top-notch engine roared to life, it instantly swept away the nervousness hidden in my heart!
In its place was an excitement I couldn't hold back!
I pressed the gas pedal, and the sports car shot forward.
Jason looked at me with a smile.
He'd had quite a bit to drink tonight, and his eyes were slightly hazy, especially alluring in the night.
"How is it? Do you like this feeling?" Jason asked with a smile.
Just then, a red light. I stopped the car smoothly, turned to look at him, unable to suppress the excitement on my face.
"I love it! I finally understand why rich people like sports cars!"
This exhilarating feeling, once you experience it, is like getting addicted.
"You can take this car and drive it," Jason said casually.
"No, I have my own car." I immediately refused.
"Don't you like it?" Jason raised an eyebrow.
I said, "Just the gas for this car would bankrupt me."
"I'll pay for your gas."
"No, and if I crash it, I can't afford to fix it either."
"I'll fix it for you."
"Still no, I can't neglect my own beloved car."
Jason ground his back teeth, his tone carrying a hint of complaint, "Then why don't you think about not neglecting me?"
I was in a good mood today, so I didn't argue with him.
I originally wanted to drive Jason home first, then go home myself.
But Jason had me drive straight to my rental place.
He said, "I left something at home that I need for work tomorrow."
I looked at him suspiciously but didn't say anything more.
We arrived at my place.
Jason walked around the house for a bit, then lay down on the sofa.
It was getting late, and I had to work tomorrow.
After one last glance at Jason, I went straight to the bathroom to shower, then returned to my bedroom, locked the door, and went to sleep.
I heard sounds from outside - it seemed like Jason was taking a shower.
The moment my head hit the pillow, drowsiness surged up, and I fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, when I woke up, I went to the bathroom to wash up and heard my phone ringing in the bedroom.
I walked over and just answered when Luke asked unhappily, "Sue, what do you mean by hiring a caregiver? Are you not planning to come to the hospital anymore? We came all this way for treatment, and you won't even come to the hospital to take care of Mom? Do you even have Mom in your heart anymore?"
I frowned instinctively but still patiently explained, "Luke, you've got it wrong. I didn't mean that. It's just that she doesn't want to see me - she gets angry every time she sees me. Didn't the doctor say she needs rest now? I'd better not go and upset her."
I added, "I'll pay the medical expenses I promised yesterday. When the bill comes, take a photo and send it to me."
"Sue!" My words seemed to anger Luke. His voice immediately rose, full of dissatisfaction and, angry scolding, "She's your real mother! Now she's sick and hospitalized, waiting for surgery, and you, as her daughter, won't even come take care of her yourself. I really misjudged you! I never thought you'd become so cold! I used to feel sorry for you, thinking it was hard for you working alone in Seaside City, but now I see you deserve it! With your cold and stubborn personality, no wonder Mom dislikes you. Have you ever reflected on your own problems?"
Hearing Luke's words, anger surged up in me instantly.
"Luke, what right do you have to say this to me? Since childhood, you've enjoyed all of Cora's love. Her time, energy, and money were basically all spent on you. You never went hungry, and you had new clothes every year. Didn't you say you'd take responsibility? Since you enjoyed all those benefits before, you should take responsibility now! Stop calling me over and over to blame me! Jason was right - you're a hypocrite! You enjoyed all the benefits yourself, and now you're standing on some moral high ground, pointing fingers at me!"
There was a moment of silence on the other end.
Then came Luke's voice, suppressing his anger, "Even if you say that, you still have to split Mom's medical expenses with me."
"I know. That's it, I'm hanging up now," I said the last sentence expressionlessly and hung up.
The room fell silent.
I gripped my phone tightly, silent for a long time.
I didn't understand why Luke felt so entitled.
The person who had been wronged all along, since childhood, was me!
He enjoyed everything exclusively before, but now wants to share the responsibility with me.
He accused me of being unfilial, ruthlessly trampling on my wounds and pain!
I lowered my eyes, trying hard to stay calm as I took deep breaths.
Just then, a familiar scent enveloped me.
Jason hugged me from behind, his voice low and gentle, "You did great just now. Don't be afraid, I'm here for you."
"If you don't know how to curse at people, let me do it. I'm really mean when I curse - you can just cover your ears and stand aside!"
Listening to Jason's rambling, my heart miraculously calmed down.
I felt warm inside.
But...
I gently pushed Jason away and said helplessly, "You're being a bit too noisy. How about saying a bit less?"
"Me? Are you sure it's not Kelly?" Jason looked utterly shocked.
"That's right, it's you." I smiled slightly and walked toward the kitchen.
