Chapter 61

Ophelia Keaton.

"I'm so sorry for everything that you've been through," Jolene said as we sat around their kitchen table, enjoying lunch. Her eyes were still red from crying earlier, and I could tell she was still trying to process everything that had happened. I nodded silently, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside me.

"I still blame myself for not trying harder to get custody of you," Michael added. They were both ignoring their burgers, and I devoured mine. Since coming back to Miami, I didn't eat much, considering that I didn't trust Manny or the maids. Maybe I was making up for all those times when I had to stick to a strict diet, or maybe it was all the stress I'd been dealing with lately.

I picked up a fry and took a small bite of it, savoring the salty flavor. "Don't blame yourselves," I said, looking at Jolene and Michael with a gentle smile. "Manny was a powerful man, and he did everything he could to have his way."

There was a moment of silence before Michael spoke, his voice firm. "We know the main reason for your visit, Ophelia," he said, his eyes locked on mine. "And we will testify against Manny."

When I spoke to Zack last night, he said that his parents would not hesitate to testify against Manny, but even if they didn't, we have a lot on him that would put him away for good.

I gave them a small smile to show my gratitude. "Thank you," I said. It was a moment of warmth in an otherwise chaotic and uncertain situation. They were good people, and I wanted them to be a part of my life.

Maybe the girls and I could even visit them again before we have to leave for Cuba, a chance to create more memories and strengthen our bond. The thought is a comforting one, and I felt excited just thinking about it.

But for now, I push that thought aside. Manny's court date is in a few days. The big leagues have gotten involved, and the process is moving forward at a rapid pace. I'm not surprised to hear that there are many people who want to see Manny rot behind bars.

As I walked into the room, the tiny, adorable bundle of joy that lay before me immediately caught my attention. Zack's daughter, baby Zadie, gazed up at me with wide, curious eyes, her tiny hands curled into fists as she took in my presence. I felt a surge of warmth and tenderness wash over me as I gazed at her tiny, perfect face. For a moment, I forgot all about the chaos and drama that had been plaguing my life lately, and all that mattered was this little one who was so innocent and full of life.

It was amazing how a baby who I just met could change my mood like that. The thought of her mother neglecting her, leaving her to be cared for by someone else, left my heart broken. I couldn't help but think about the countless times Zack must have had to worry about providing for his daughter, and the sacrifices he must have made to ensure her well-being.

"Hello, baby," I started cooing at her, feeling a sense of awkwardness wash over me as I tried to break the ice.

Zack chuckled and replied, "Would you like to hold her? Although I can't promise that she won't drool all over you." He made his way over to her crib, his movements gentle and deliberate as he lifted her out of her bassinet. As he handed her to me, I felt a sense of trepidation. - what if I dropped her? But as soon as my hands closed around her small frame, all my worries disappeared. She was so light, so fragile, and yet so full of life. I looked down at her and felt my heart melt all over again.

Zack moved to stand next to me, and I felt a sense of comfort with his presence beside me. We spent most of our time speaking on the phone and he knew the right things to say at that moment. I couldn't have gotten a better brother.

Baby Zadie reached out for my hair, wrapping the blonde strands around her tiny fingers. "Meet ya Aunt, Ophelia, sweet pea," Zack tells her softly.

As I continued to stare down at Zadie, I felt a pang of emotion well up inside me. "Can I keep her?" I ask Zack, my voice barely above a whisper. She was just so adorable and she made me happy.

“Aw shucks, she might look like a sweet little thing, but I reckon you’d be lucky to make it through a day without getting yourself killed,” Zack says with a chuckle, making me roll my eyes at him.

After a while, he spoke again. "So, ya gonna be heading back to college now that things are almost wrapped up?"

I nod. “Yeah, I didn’t originally have any plans to pursue further education, but I actually enjoy living that way.”

Zack took a seat on the bed in the room and I followed, sitting next to him as I played with Zadie. "Sounds like a plan," Zack said. "But you best not take off and not come back here to pay us another visit."

"I'm looking forward to everything wrapping up, and I'm planning a quick getaway with my friends," I said with a chuckle. "So, make sure to clear some space for us when we come to visit."

"No problem, sis."

As I stood in the courtroom, my nervous energy coursing through my veins, my heart racing like a runaway train, I couldn't help but notice the weight of the world bearing down on Manny's shoulders. Just a few hours ago, we had walked into this very room, each of us carrying a heavy burden of uncertainty and anxiety. But to my surprise, Manny remained silent, his eyes speaking volumes about his emotions. If looks could kill, then my mom, aunt, cousin, and I would have been dead the moment he laid eyes on us. His piercing gaze seemed to bore into my soul, radiating a sense of displeasure and disapproval that made me shift uncomfortably in my seat. Despite his quiet demeanor, I could sense the turmoil brewing beneath the surface, and I wondered what was going through his mind as he gazed at us with a mixture of anger and disappointment.

There were countless atrocities that Manny had committed. The sheer number of crimes was staggering, and I couldn't help but wonder if I would ever be able to fully process the trauma that he had inflicted on me and others. The thought of his illegal activities was enough to give me nightmares, and I couldn't help but feel a bit of relief that justice would finally be served.

The prosecution's case against Manny was airtight, thanks to the bravery of the victims who had come forward to testify against him. The girls trafficked by Manny were safe and sound, and their testimonies served as a powerful reminder of the evil Manny had perpetrated. But it wasn't just the victims who had testified against Manny - some men who had done business with him had also come forward to reveal the extent of his manipulation and coercion. They had unknowingly entered into business with him, only to realize too late that they had fallen victim to his manipulation and coercion.

My own family members, Michael and Jolene, had also spoken up about their experiences with Manny. They had been paid to keep me away from him, and when they eventually tried to adopt me, Manny had threatened them to keep them in line. Their testimony was a powerful reminder of the lengths to which Manny would go to get what he wanted, and it was a testament to their bravery that they had come forward to share their stories. As I listened to their testimony, I felt a sense of gratitude and admiration for their strength and courage.

Several dirty cops had also testified against Manny in exchange for having their own sentences reduced or dropped. It was a sickening display of corruption and greed, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of disgust and outrage. Instead of upholding the law and protecting their communities, these officers had chosen to enable Manny’s criminal activities and cover up his crimes. And now, they were trying to use their testimonies as a way to get off scot-free. It was a travesty, and I hoped that justice would also serve in this case.

As I listened to the harrowing testimonies being shared in the courtroom, one in particular struck a chord within me - Camila's. Her words resonated deeply, evoking a torrent of emotions that left me teary-eyed and haunted by the suffering she had endured. Despite her being hospitalized for days, I hadn’t found the courage to visit her, but after hearing her courageous account, I knew I had to offer my support to her. Through a somber video call, Camila recounted a tale of horror and manipulation at the hands of Manny. By revealing how he had purchased her from her own family, she exposed the coercion that led to a marriage that was far from genuine. Camila painted a portrait of a complex man, one who could be kind and charming one moment, only to reveal his monstrous nature when challenged. Camila's bravery in standing up for herself had incited his wrath, leading to unspeakable acts of abuse and torment.

She recounted a night of desperation when she tried to flee his clutches, the futile attempt overshadowed by the brutal consequences she suffered. Camila also divulged chilling details of accompanying Manny on his illicit business excursions, where she bore witness to his criminal activities and illegal dealings. Her unwavering testimony shed light on the depth of Manny's depravity and the insidious hold he had over those in his grasp. Inspired by Camila's strength and resilience, I felt a renewed determination to confront the darkness that Manny had cast over our lives and seek justice for all his victims.

The time that we had all been waiting nervously on had finally approached. The courtroom was silent as Judge Thompson's gavel came down, imposing a life sentence on Manny for his heinous crimes. "You have been found guilty of trafficking multiple girls, transporting drugs, and committing multiple murders and attempted murders. You have also been convicted of physically harming numerous individuals," the judge said, her voice stern but controlled. "These crimes are among the most egregious and disturbing I have ever seen in my career. Your actions have caused irreparable harm to countless individuals and have shattered the trust of our community. You will spend the rest of your life in prison, and I hope that time is used to reflect on the gravity of your actions and the suffering you have caused."

As the judge delivered the verdict, the courtroom erupted into a symphony of cheers, hugs, and tears. It was a moment of catharsis, a culmination of years of pain, trauma, and suffering. I felt a sense of overwhelming relief wash over me as I processed the reality that Manny would spend the rest of his life behind bars, unable to harm or manipulate anyone else. The weight of his crimes, once a crushing burden on our lives, was finally being lifted.

My mom, aunt, and cousin swept me up in a group hug, tears streaming down my face as we basked in the warmth of this momentous occasion. It was a bittersweet feeling, as I was simultaneously heartbroken and happy. Heartbroken that my father, the man who was supposed to love and protect me, had turned out to be a monster who had committed countless crimes. But happy that we were finally given the chance to live a life free from his influence, to rebuild and heal without the constant fear of his abuse. The tears flowed freely as I clung to my loved ones, grateful for their support and love throughout this journey. It was a moment of triumph, a testament to the resilience and strength of our family. We had faced the darkness and emerged on the other side, scarred but whole. As we celebrated this new chapter in our lives, I knew that we would continue to heal and grow together, our bond stronger than ever.
