Chapter 149 He wanted to make amends, but it was already too late!
Victoria didn't want to answer him!
She was also unable to respond to him as the sedative took effect in her body. She slowly and reluctantly closed her eyes. As she slept, she looked thin and frail, devoid of her former radiance.
Zachary gently touched her face.
Large tears rolled from the corners of her eyes. Although she was clearly asleep, she subconsciously resisted his touch. Zachary felt extremely sad. He looked at her for a long time before slowly getting up and walking out.
The first-floor hall of the villa was bustling with activity all night due to the new addition to the family. The servants were handling their own matters.
Zachary descended the stairs slowly. He looked at the changed carpet, and he could almost smell the scent of blood in the air. Zachary's hand trembled as he took out a cigarette from his pocket but didn't light it.
In the quiet of the night, he sat on the sofa. A gust of night wind blew in through the French windows, tousling his black hair and adding a deeper sense of mystery to his handsome face. He sat there as if waiting for someone.
At one in the morning, the sound of a car could be heard in the courtyard. The servants sneaked a glance and were startled.
Five black commercial vehicles pulled up in a line at the villa, and more than twenty black-clad bodyguards emerged, all looking like elites in the industry, devoid of any human warmth.
The sound of delicate high heels echoed. Secretary Thomas had rushed over in the dead of night, despite being newly married, to attend to her boss's private affairs.
She felt annoyed, but Zachary paid her handsomely!
After Secretary Thomas entered, Zachary stood up expressionlessly and said, "Arrange for them to guard every part of the villa, not allowing anyone in or out!"
Secretary Thomas's heart raced. She couldn't help but speak up, "By doing this, Mr.Zachary, Victoria will hate you even more!"
Does she hate him?
Zachary recalled Victoria's gaze and said self-deprecatingly and bitterly, "She already hates me enough! By the way, please find the best nutritionist at the hospital and have them stay at the villa. Victoria's body needs proper care!"
He paused and lowered his voice, "Victoria is still bleeding profusely."
Secretary Thomas nodded.
She saw that he seemed about to leave, so she offered, "I'll stay here! If Victoria needs anything, I can help her!" She said this out of sympathy for Victoria.
She had once envied and resented Victoria, but now only pity remained. After all, Victoria and Zachary were husband and wife, and what he was doing to her was causing her immense pain.
Late at night, Zachary went to the cemetery. It was winter, and the graveyard exuded a lonely feeling.
A bouquet was placed in front of Gabriel's grave, expressing Victoria's sorrow and regret.
Zachary squatted down and gently touched Gabriel's photo.
He spoke softly, "Dad! I'm sorry!" But Gabriel could no longer hear him.
He had turned to dust, resting alongside Victoria's mother. He had lived carefree and happy in his youth but died tragically, with neither of his children by his side.
Zachary didn't stay long. He flew to Charlotte Harbor overnight to meet Mason. Mason had been escorted by the police and was informed of the visit within two hours.
He knew who the visitor was.
In the dim and narrow visiting room, they sat on opposite sides. It had been a long time since they had seen each other.
Mason had lost weight but was still handsome. He stared coldly at Zachary through the iron bars and said only one sentence, "The thing I regret most is marrying my sister to you!"
After speaking, Mason got up and left!
The person next to Zachary whispered, "Let me try to persuade him again! Maybe he would change his mind and be willing to see Zachary one more time!" Zachary sat quietly. H
is expression was darker than the gloomy cell. After a while, he coldly said, "No need!" He knew Mason's temperament well.
If he refused to appeal, he wouldn't change his decision.
It wasn't that he didn't want freedom; he didn't want to owe Zachary any favors, and he didn't want Victoria to be under his mercy.
Today, Zachary realized that he couldn't make amends for Victoria.
The Pritzker family wanted no further involvement with him.
He flew back in the dead of night and returned to Redwater, arriving at the villa by seven in the morning. The black Rolls-Royce came to a stop at the ornate black gate.
The driver spoke softly, "Sir, it's Whitney."
Zachary had been resting with his eyes closed after a night of rushing around when he heard the words.
Immediately, he opened the car door and got out, calling out, "Whitney."
In the early morning, the dew had turned into frost.
Whitney had encountered a change, almost overnight turning her hair white. Yet, when she saw Zachary, she remained calm and composed, her voice soft and hoarse: "I'll take Victoria home."
Zachary stared at her.
After a while, he lowered his gaze and said, "This is her home. I will take care of her! Whitney, if there's anything I can help, just tell me directly."
Whitney forced a faint smile, said, "I dare not trouble you, Zachary."
This sentence created an immense distance between them.
For a moment, Zachary didn't know how to respond. After all, that day he had abandoned Victoria despite her pleas, causing the Pritzker family to fall apart. How could Whitney not resent him?
They remained silent for a moment.
Finally, Whitney choked up and said, "Zachary, you are now thinking of making it up to Victoria, but in your prime, how long can you hold on? I beg you, if you don't like her, give her back to me. I will take good care of her, and she still has a way out! It's also my way of making it up to her parents."
Zachary was also moved.
He suppressed the warmth in his eyes and softly said, "Whitney, rest assured. I will take care of her."
Whitney became agitated. "Is your care keeping her locked up at home? Is your care imprisoning her, not letting her see her own family? Zachary, perhaps you have a slight liking for her, but true affection is not as selfish as you are. She no longer has the love of a spouse for you, so why do you insist on keeping her by your side?"
Her words hit Zachary's weak spot.
He felt a pang in his heart.
After a while, his voice was low and hoarse. "She hates me, I know it!"
He got into the car and instructed someone to take Whitney back, ignoring her pleas as she tapped on the car window. Zachary didn't soften his heart because he knew that once he let go, Victoria would immediately leave him.
She wouldn't come back!
The Rolls-Royce Phantom slowly drove into the villa in the golden sunlight.
The driver got out and opened the rear door.
Zachary, exhausted from the night's events, asked the servant as he got out of the car, "Is Victoria awake?"
The servant replied softly, "Victoria is still asleep, but Emily woke up twice. The nurse has fed her formula and didn't disturb Emily 's rest."
Zachary nodded, loosening his tie as he ascended the stairs.
The bedroom was peaceful. Victoria slept soundly, her breathing shallow.
Emily , on the other hand, was awake, her bright eyes curiously exploring the new world, even though he could only see up to 0.2 meters away.
Zachary placed his tie on the sofa and approached Emily , holding him gently against his chest. The warmth of the baby dispelled his sorrow, making him feel that there was still a chance for him and Victoria that they could reconcile.
He held Emily close, his voice trembling slightly, "I am your father."
