Chapter 333
"Thanks, but no need. I already paid!"
To stop him from paying, I had already scanned the QR code on the table and paid directly.
This wasn't my first time at this breakfast spot, so I knew the prices well enough to pay without any issues.
The young man looked a bit disappointed when he saw I had already paid. "Well then, I'll treat you next time!"
"That won't be necessary."
I hadn't even opened my mouth when a cold, distant voice came from above.
I looked up to see Christopher standing beside me. I hadn't noticed when he arrived. He was wearing a black trench coat and looked down at the young man with an imposing presence.
It wasn't until Christopher revealed his identity that I realized why the young man seemed familiar.
"Mr. Owens, all this persistence—following, coincidental meetings, and now trying to treat her—what exactly are you trying to achieve?" His voice was calm, but there was an unmistakable chill to it.
It was Bobby.
I found it hard to reconcile the polite, well-groomed young man in front of me with the arrogant Bobby I had encountered at the private dining restaurant a few days ago.
Now that his identity was exposed, Bobby's sunny demeanor vanished, replaced by a hint of malice.
He provocatively replied to Christopher, "Mr. Collins, just because you're a workaholic and single doesn't mean your employees have to be the same. Besides, Ms. Turner is just your secretary. Are you really going to meddle in her personal life and her suitors? Isn't that overstepping a bit?"
He was practically calling Christopher a busybody.
Now that I knew Bobby's true identity, his attempts to get close to me made me feel sick.
And now, he was insulting Christopher right in front of me.
I couldn't stand for that.
I stepped in front of Christopher and pointed at Bobby, "You think you have the right to talk about Mr. Collins? Look at yourself, you're like a rat, disgusting and repulsive. Get lost!"
"Blind woman, how am I not good enough? Look at these," Bobby said, showing off his gold watch, rings, and necklace.
He was trying to flaunt his wealth.
But he didn't realize that Christopher had all of these things and more.
And as someone who had never lacked love or material things growing up, I wasn't impressed by such displays.
The more Bobby tried to show off his wealth, the more it revealed his inner emptiness.
People around us started whispering, intrigued by the scene.
I remained unfazed and mocked him, "You know, the more someone lacks something, the more they try to show it off. Only those who are truly insecure feel the need to flaunt their wealth. I despise people like that."
Bobby hadn't expected me to be so unaffected and to mock him further.
He was so angry that he couldn't even form a coherent sentence.
I didn't know if my words pleased Christopher, but his usually cold demeanor softened, and his eyes were full of amusement.
"Mr. Owens, if you like showing off, you should do it in front of your fiancée. You've got the wrong person and the wrong place," Christopher said with a mocking tone.
The people around us looked at Bobby with even more disdain after hearing Christopher's words.
Although I hadn't recognized Bobby at first, Paula had warned me about his past misdeeds to prevent me from being deceived.
Bobby was a bad man who liked to toy with girls. He would pursue them, and once he succeeded, he would heartlessly abandon them.
Once, a girl accidentally got pregnant and sought his responsibility. Not only did he refuse, but he also forced her to have an abortion and publicly shamed her, making everyone despise her.
The girl was cyberbullied, developed depression, and eventually took her own life before she even turned twenty.
But Bobby showed no remorse. Instead, he continued his games, deceiving one innocent girl after another.
What was even more despicable was his manipulation of people. He enjoyed seducing girls who already had boyfriends. If the boyfriends were weak-willed, he would drive a wedge between them, causing them to break up. Then, after getting the girl, he would cruelly discard her.
If the boyfriends were devoted, he would use his family's influence to pressure them, forcing them to make painful compromises. He took perverse pleasure in seeing couples suffer.
I despised Lawrence for his scheming ways, but I loathed Bobby even more for his vile behavior.
Ignoring Bobby, I left the breakfast spot.
Christopher silently followed me.
As I was about to get into my car, Christopher suddenly opened the passenger door and got in without asking.
I glanced around and saw Christopher's car parked a little way down the street.
"Aren't you going to take your car?" I asked.
"Someone will take care of it," he replied.
I started the car and drove away.
But I couldn't help my curiosity. "Mr. Collins, when did you know Bobby was targeting me? Did you disappear on purpose earlier?"
If Christopher's car had been following us, Bobby probably wouldn't have shown up so soon. He knew Christopher would recognize him immediately, losing his chance to approach me.
"I'm a bit hungry," Christopher said, looking at me with a deep, magnetic voice.
My heart skipped a beat. "There's a good sandwich place up ahead."
"Sounds good. If you say it's good, it must be. Little foodie," Christopher said with a smile.
I wanted to deny it, but I remembered how excited I got whenever Tiana came up with a new dish. Maybe I was a bit of a foodie.
And Christopher was smiling again.
His features were sharp and commanding when he wasn't smiling, but when he did, it was so beautiful that it made one want to give him the world.
Thinking about how I had treated Christopher that morning, I felt a pang of guilt.
"Christopher, I'm sorry about this morning. I was being childish," I apologized, feeling a weight lift off my shoulders.
Christopher chuckled. "You were pretty childish."
I was speechless.
Why did his words make me feel so embarrassed?
His voice had a way of drawing people in, making it easy to get lost in it.
"What do you know about Bobby?" Christopher suddenly asked, changing the subject.
I told him everything I knew about Bobby and reassured him, "Mr. Collins, don't worry. Bobby's interest in me is temporary. As long as I don't fall for it, he'll give up soon enough."
