Chapter 105 — Kade
Mr. Baker sat quietly in the back of the plane. He hadn’t asked for anything other than getting to Boston quickly.
No one had told me what kind of emergency he had, and I hadn’t asked. It wasn’t my business.
As I took the airplane into the sky, I felt like my world had just caved in around me.
Somehow in the span of a handful of minutes, I’d gone from feeling like things were finally going to work out to feeling like everything had gone wrong.
The pain in Madison’s eyes was more than I could bear.
I kicked myself for letting Noah usher me off like that.
But unfortunately, I was well schooled in keeping the client satisfied above all else.
There was something unique about being a pilot. There was plenty of time alone to think.
Nothing to do, in fact, but to think.
As I reached cruising altitude, I made myself a promise.
A pact with myself.
This was the last time I was going to put my job over my family.
And by my family, I meant Madison.
My conversation with Mike had given me options.
Options that I might not have considered if everything hadn’t converged just the way it had.
I’d left my job with the commercial airline to be closer to family, specifically my mother.
But Mother could live anywhere, so I filed that aspect away to think about a bit later.
Now I had Madison again.
And Madison was relocating.
But I wasn’t going to let it all happen again like it had eight years ago.
Mike had presented me with an option.
An option that I never would have considered until now.
I checked the computer monitors and sat back.
Things were going to work out this time.
It was just going to take some unanticipated maneuvering.
Some would call it a pivot.
So I was going to pivot.
After I landed, I would start making phone calls.
I had a lot to do.
I didn’t consider myself to be impulsive. I was true and steady.
But this decision wasn’t one born of impulse.
This was a decision that had been brewing for a long time.
A very long time.
Probably neigh onto ten years.
Since that day I’d met Madison.
Finally.
Everything was going to come together.
