Test Two - Sacrifice
Test Two - Sacrifice
Mrs. Rodriguez's POV
The Regulator speaks exactly twenty-four hours after test one.
TEST TWO BEGINS NOW.
I'm in the bakery watching Maya and Jake sleep. They're tangled together on the cot. Her arm across his chest. His skin blue like a corpse. Ice spreading up his neck. He won't see tomorrow.
They don't know I've been awake all night. Don't know what I've been thinking about.
HUMANITY MUST SURRENDER WHAT IT VALUES MOST.
The words sear into my brain. Final. Absolute.
SACRIFICE HUMANITY'S STRONGEST MAGICAL PRACTITIONER. PROVE MAGIC IS NOT HOARDED. PROVE POWER CAN BE WILLINGLY RELEASED.
Around me people wake gasping. Holding their heads. The voice hit everyone at once.
Maya sits up fast. "No. They can't ask that."
"They just did." I keep my voice steady even though my heart's hammering.
Jake struggles upright. His movements crack. Ice breaking. "Who's strongest?"
Everyone looks at Maya.
Of course. She's the Guardian. The one who awakened hundreds. The one with raw power pouring from her hands.
"No." Jake's on his feet somehow. Swaying. "They can't have her."
"It's a test." Pastor Williams still glows white and black. Still fighting his internal war. "To see if we'll sacrifice power for the greater good."
"I'll do it." Maya's shaking her head. "I'll volunteer. I won't let humanity fail because of me."
"That's what they expect," I say quietly.
The global summit reconnects. Fifty faces on the laptop. All saying the same thing.
"Maya Chen is obvious." Dr. Cross sounds clinical. Cold. "She's the original Guardian. Strongest practitioner. She's the sacrifice."
"So we just hand her over?" Jake's voice is raw. Dangerous. Ice spreads from his hands to the floor. "Let it take her?"
"If it saves eight billion people, yes."
Maya stands. Her face pale but determined. "I'll do it. Whatever it takes."
"No."
The word comes out before I think it through.
Everyone stares at me.
"Mrs. Rodriguez," Maya starts.
"No." Firmer this time. "You're wrong about who's strongest."
"I'm the Guardian. I have the most power."
"Power isn't strength." I step forward. My knees protest. Arthritis sharp in both. I ignore it. "Strength is choice. Willingness. Understanding what matters."
"Then who?" Dr. Cross asks from the screen.
I look at each face. Maya with her raw power and youth. Jake dying slowly. Pastor Williams fighting corruption. The forty-seven newly awakened still learning control.
They're all so young. All so necessary.
And I'm old. Tired. Already lived my life.
My daughter died twenty years ago. Car accident. My husband five years before that. Heart attack in his sleep. I have no one left except the people in this room.
And they don't need me. They need each other.
"Me." My voice comes out quieter than I want. "I volunteer."
Silence so heavy it hurts.
"You?" Maya's voice cracks. "But you don't have powers. You're not even awakened."
"Exactly." I look at the ceiling. At where the Regulator hovers. "That's the point. The test isn't about sacrificing power. It's about sacrificing willingness."
"That doesn't make sense," someone says from the screen.
"It makes perfect sense." My hands shake. I clasp them together. "You want to see if we'll give up our strongest. But strength isn't measured in magic. It's measured in what we choose to give when no one forces us."
"Mrs. Rodriguez, you can't." Maya grabs my arm. "You're needed. You've been guiding everyone. Teaching us."
"I've taught you enough." I pat her hand. Feel how warm she is. How young. "You don't need me anymore. But you need your Guardian. Need Jake. Need everyone with power for what's coming."
"We need you too."
"No. You need to learn to stand without me." I pull free gently. "That's what growing up means. Watching the old generation step aside."
Jake's ice hands clench. "This is insane. You're offering yourself when you have nothing to sacrifice."
"That's why it works." I look at him. At his blue lips. At the way death's claiming him slowly. "The Regulator wants to see if we understand. Sacrifice isn't about what we lose. It's about what we choose to give."
I turn to face the ceiling. My heart pounds so hard it hurts.
"I volunteer." My voice shakes but stays clear. "I offer myself as humanity's sacrifice. Not because I'm strongest. Because I'm willing."
The presence crushes down. Examining. Weighing.
Then words appear in everyone's mind. Clinical. Cold.
AGE SEVENTY-THREE. MAGICAL CAPACITY ZERO. COMBAT VALUE MINIMAL.
"See?" Maya's crying. "You're not valuable enough. They won't accept."
But more words come.
WILLINGNESS TO SACRIFICE: MAXIMUM. UNDERSTANDING OF TRUE STRENGTH: COMPLETE.
My breath catches.
SACRIFICE ACCEPTED.
"No." Maya's on her knees. "Please. Take me instead. I'm stronger. More valuable. Take me."
STRENGTH IS NOT POWER. THIS HUMAN UNDERSTANDS.
A pause.
TRANSFORMATION BEGINS. PERMANENT GUARDIANSHIP ASSIGNED.
"What does that mean?" Jake demands. "What happens to her?"
ETERNAL GUARDIAN AGAINST CORRUPTION. EXISTS OUTSIDE TIME. WATCHES. PREVENTS. ENSURES CORRUPTION NEVER SPREADS AGAIN.
My stomach drops. Not death. Something else. Something worse.
"For how long?" My voice barely works.
ETERNAL. UNTIL HUMANITY EVOLVES BEYOND NEED. ESTIMATED DURATION: ONE MILLION YEARS.
The words hit like hammers. A million years. Watching. Alone. Never aging. Never dying. Never resting. Never touching anyone. Never speaking. Never sleeping.
Just existing. Watching. Forever.
"That's not sacrifice." Pastor Williams steps forward. "That's damnation."
IT IS NECESSARY. ALL MAGICAL SPECIES REQUIRE ETERNAL GUARDIAN. CHOICE CANNOT BE UNMADE.
Maya's sobbing now. "Please. Let me do it. I'm Guardian. It should be me."
YOU ARE NEEDED ELSEWHERE. THIS CHOICE IS FINAL.
The Regulator's presence wraps around me specifically. Changing. Transforming.
I look at Maya. At Jake. At everyone I've guided. "It's okay. This is right."
"It's not okay." Maya's voice breaks. "You'll be alone. For a million years. You'll watch us die. Watch our children die. Watch generations pass. Unable to touch or speak or help."
"But humanity survives." I smile even though tears pour down my face. "That's worth it. You're worth it."
The transformation starts.
Pain explodes through every cell. I scream. Can't stop it. My body tears apart. Rebuilds. Dies. Regenerates. Over and over. Cells aging backward then forward then sideways through time.
Maya holds me. Jake's frozen hands burn my skin. Pastor Williams prays words I can't hear over my own screaming.
I feel myself spreading. Becoming something that exists everywhere simultaneously. My consciousness stretching across the globe. Across time. Seeing every human. Every point where corruption might take root.
The pain peaks. Crests. Stops.
I open eyes that see everything.
My body stands in the bakery but I exist everywhere. Watching. Guarding. Eternal.
TEST TWO: PASSED.
The Regulator's voice is gentler now.
HUMANITY DEMONSTRATED TRUE SACRIFICE. CHOICE WITHOUT COERCION. UNDERSTANDING THAT STRENGTH IS WILLINGNESS NOT POWER.
I try to speak. My mouth moves. No sound comes. I exist but I'm not here. Not anywhere. Everywhere and nowhere.
"Mrs. Rodriguez?" Maya sounds miles away even though she's touching my face.
I can't answer. Can only watch. Can only guard. Can only exist.
FINAL TEST BEGINS IN TWELVE HOURS.
The Regulator pulses.
WARNING: NINETY-EIGHT PERCENT OF SPECIES FAIL TEST THREE. BALANCE REQUIRES WHAT MOST CANNOT ACHIEVE.
I want to ask what balance means. Want to warn them. Want to help.
But I can't. I can only watch.
Twelve hours until the final test.
Then a million years after that.
Watching everyone I love age and die.
Watching their children age and die.
Watching humanity evolve or fail or transform into something unrecognizable.
Unable to speak. Unable to touch. Unable to rest.
Eternal guardian.
Eternal witness.
Eternal and completely alone.
