False Prophets
False Prophets
Jake's POV
The buses start rolling in before the sun's fully up.
I'm outside the bakery running on coffee and spite. Haven't slept. Can't sleep. Maya collapsed an hour ago after awakening forty-seven people and Mrs. Rodriguez had to carry her inside like she weighed nothing. Like she'd burned everything away except bones and determination.
The first bus has "Prophet Elijah's Faithful Journey Ministry" painted across the side in gold letters. Two hundred people pour out singing something that echoes off the buildings wrong. Too loud. Too organized.
A man in white robes walks toward me like he's expecting the street to part for him. Maybe it usually does. His cologne reaches me before he does. Something expensive that smells like cedar and lies.
"The faithful have been called." His voice fills the street without effort. Practiced. "God sent me visions of pure light driving back darkness. He commanded me to bring my flock here to join the holy war."
I'm too tired for this. "Who called you?"
"The Lord himself."
"Funny. The videos of what happened here only went viral three hours ago. That's pretty fast for divine intervention."
His smile doesn't move but something behind his eyes shifts. Calculating. "God works in mysterious ways."
"So does Twitter."
More vehicles arrive before he can answer. Vans with religious symbols. Cars packed with people wearing crosses and prayer beads and crystals. A woman in purple robes announces herself as Priestess Miriam. A man with elaborate beads calls himself Imam Hassan. Another woman dressed like she walked out of a fantasy novel says she's High Priestess Luna.
By the time the sun's actually up there are over five hundred of them packed into the street. All claiming divine right to the magic Maya discovered. All demanding to be awakened. All absolutely certain they're pure enough to deserve it.
I'm absolutely certain most of them are full of it.
My phone buzzes. Mrs. Rodriguez. "They're getting aggressive. Demanding Maya come out. Some are trying the back door."
"Keep her inside."
"They're saying if she refuses it proves she's corrupted."
I look at Prophet Elijah. At the cameras his followers are holding. Recording everything. Building a story they can control.
"I'm coming around back," I say.
"Jake, there are too many of them."
"I know."
I end the call and face the crowd. Five hundred faces staring back. Some look genuine. Scared and hopeful and desperate for something to believe in. Others look hungry in a way that makes my skin crawl.
"Maya Chen is recovering." My voice doesn't shake. Hockey taught me that at least. How to sound steady when everything's falling apart. "She awakened forty-seven people last night. Her body shut down. She's not coming out here."
Prophet Elijah steps closer. "The truly faithful don't tire. If she's weak it's because her faith is impure. Let someone stronger take her place."
"Someone like you."
"God has blessed me with strength." He raises his hands and light appears between his palms. Soft. Golden. Almost pretty.
The crowd gasps. His followers start chanting something that might be prayer or might be theater.
I watch the light carefully. It's too controlled. Too perfect. Like watching a special effect instead of something real.
"Nice trick."
His smile gets wider. Sharper. "It's not a trick. It's proof of divine favor. Awaken me and I'll show you power beyond anything your corrupted Guardian can manage."
Something hot flashes through my chest. "She's not corrupted."
"She turned three people into monsters last night. I watched the videos. Clear evidence of tainted faith." He turns to the crowd. "But I can help! Let me take this burden! Let me lead the faithful to victory!"
The crowd roars. His followers surge forward.
I don't think. Just pull.
Ice spreads from my feet like I'm bleeding cold into the street. The temperature drops so fast people's breath turns white. Frost crawls across the pavement between us and them.
"Nobody enters this building."
Prophet Elijah stares at the ice. At me. His expression shifts from confident to something else. Something that makes me think of sharks circling.
"You have power without awakening," he says slowly. "Interesting."
"Back up."
He does. But his eyes stay on mine and I can see him filing this information away. Planning how to use it.
The next few hours drag like walking through mud. More religious leaders arrive claiming they're the real deal. They argue with each other about whose faith is purest. Whose god is strongest. Who deserves power.
I watch them all. Looking for cracks. For tells. The little things people do when they're lying.
Priestess Miriam's holy light flickers when someone questions her. Imam Hassan keeps touching his sleeve where something's hidden. High Priestess Luna's mystical energy only appears when her followers are positioned just right.
They're frauds. I know it. But proving it without making them martyrs is harder.
"We need to expose them." Mrs. Rodriguez appears beside me. She looks worse than I feel. "Before they hurt someone."
"They'll say we're attacking faith."
"Then make them prove their claims. Real demonstration. Real consequences."
I look at the crowd. At Prophet Elijah watching us through the window with that shark smile.
"Get me a camera," I say. "And wake Maya up."
"Jake, she needs to rest."
"I know. Do it anyway."
Twenty minutes later Maya's beside me. She can barely stand. I want to carry her back inside but she pushes my hand away.
"I can do this," she whispers.
Prophet Elijah pushes through the crowd. "The corrupted Guardian emerges. Come to beg forgiveness?"
"I'm giving you what you want." Maya's voice is thin but steady. "You claim your faith is pure. Strong enough for awakening. Prove it."
The street goes quiet. Even the cameras stop moving.
"Right here. Right now. In front of everyone." Maya raises her hands and they shake slightly. "Who's first?"
Prophet Elijah's smile falters. Just for a second. Then comes back brighter.
"I accept."
"Wait." I step forward. "Before awakening let's verify everyone's claims. Priestess Miriam, show us your holy light without any equipment."
Her face goes pale. "I don't need to prove myself to you."
"Then you don't get awakened. Imam Hassan, demonstrate your divine protection. Take off your robe first."
He clutches his sleeve. "This is ridiculous."
"High Priestess Luna, display your mystical energy. Just you. No followers helping."
She starts backing away. Her followers look confused. Betrayed.
One by one I call out their tricks. Point at hidden devices. Note the coached responses. The crowd watches their prophets crumble under basic questions.
"Frauds," I say. "All of them. Using faith as a weapon to control you."
The crowd turns. Angry. Their own prophets try to leave but people block them. Demanding truth. Demanding answers.
"This is what happens," Maya says over the noise. "When people weaponize faith. When they use belief to gain power instead of serve others."
Prophet Elijah watches his competition fall apart. Then steps forward.
"They were weak. False prophets pretending to be chosen." He pulls off his robe. No hidden wires. No devices I can see. "But I am different."
He holds out his hands to Maya. "Awaken me. Let everyone see the difference between frauds and true faith."
Maya looks at me. Her eyes ask a question I can't answer.
I nod anyway because we need to prove the point completely.
She takes his hands.
Light pours between them. Brighter than last night. Hotter. Prophet Elijah's face twists but not in pain. In something that looks like ecstasy.
The light spreads through him. Up his arms. Into his chest. Across his face like living fire.
No black veins appear.
Just pure white light. Growing stronger. Hotter. More powerful than anything I've seen except maybe Pastor Williams.
"You see?" Prophet Elijah's voice resonates like someone's turned up the volume on reality. "God has chosen me. Made me pure. Made me strong."
He raises his hands and light explodes outward. I close my eyes but it burns through my eyelids. The crowd stumbles back.
When I can see again Prophet Elijah is floating. Actually floating three feet off the ground. Light pours from him in waves that make the air shimmer and dance.
"I am the true prophet." His voice sounds like it's coming from everywhere at once. "I am pure. I am chosen. I am the one who will lead the faithful to glory."
Maya's hand finds mine. Her fingers are ice cold and shaking.
"Jake." Her whisper barely reaches me. "His power. It's growing."
I watch Prophet Elijah rise higher. Watch the light around him intensify until it hurts to look at. Watch his face transform into something that might be holy or might be something else entirely.
"He's not faking," Mrs. Rodriguez says. She sounds horrified. "His faith is completely real."
"I know."
"Which means the corruption can't touch him."
"I know."
"And he's more powerful than anyone we've awakened."
"Yeah."
Prophet Elijah turns to look at us. His eyes glow pure white. No pupil. No humanity I can see.
"Thank you, Maya Chen, for awakening me to my true purpose." The windows rattle with his voice. "Now step aside. The faithful have a new leader. One who won't hesitate. One who won't doubt. One who knows with absolute certainty what God demands."
The light around him pulses. Grows. Reaches.
Maya's grip on my hand goes tight enough to hurt.
And I understand what we've done.
We just gave unlimited power to a fanatic who believes he can't be wrong.
