Chapter 138 Built Strong Enough
Chapter 138 Built Strong Enough
Jake POV
My whole body goes rigid hearing Penny's bag is gone, birth certificate paperwork and all, and I'm halfway to the door before Detective Reyes catches my arm.
"Jake, wait. We already have officers sweeping the parking lot and reviewing traffic cameras on every road out of here. Running out there right now doesn't help Penny. It just puts you in the same danger she's already in."
I force myself to stop, chest heaving, every instinct screaming to chase down whoever just took something that could unravel every secret we've been chasing for weeks. Penny grips my hand tight, grounding me, her own fear visible but controlled in a way that somehow steadies mine too.
"What do we do," I ask, voice tight.
"You go home," Reyes says firmly. "All of you, together, with a patrol car following. I'll call the second we have anything. I promise you that."
We don't have much choice but to trust her. The whole group moves out of the security office together, tight and careful, my dad's hand steady on Lily's shoulder, Maren and Diana flanking Penny like a wall nobody's getting through tonight.
That's when a man in a gray jacket steps into our path near the exit, and every muscle in my body goes tense before I even fully register who he is.
"Jake Mercer?" He holds up both hands quickly, seeing my reaction. "Sorry, sorry, bad timing, I can tell. I'm Coach Alvarez, I'm a recruiter with State. I was hoping to catch you after the game."
The scout. The one Coach warned me about all week, the one whose opinion apparently mattered enough to change the entire direction of my future.
"This really isn't a great moment," I say, glancing back toward Penny, toward the whole group still moving carefully toward the parking lot exit.
"I understand completely, and I promise I'll keep this quick," he says, falling into step beside us as we walk. "I watched your whole season, Jake. Watched tonight's game especially close. That final drive, under that kind of pressure, in front of that kind of crowd, that's exactly the composure we look for in a player."
Part of me wants to just keep walking, focus entirely on getting Penny somewhere safe. But something in his next words makes me actually slow down.
"I also know what your family's been through these last few weeks," he continues, voice steady, not unkind. "I read the articles. I know it's been ugly. And I want to be straight with you, Jake, that almost changed my recommendation. Programs get nervous about drama, about anything that might reflect poorly on the school."
"I know," I say quietly, bracing myself for the rejection I've half expected since the first headline dropped weeks ago.
"But I kept coming back to something," he says, stopping fully now, forcing me to stop too even with everything else pulling at my attention. "You didn't fall apart, Jake. Your whole life got turned upside down publicly, painfully, in ways most kids never have to face, and you still showed up to every practice, still led your team to a championship, still played the best football of your entire season during the worst month of your life. That's not luck. That's character. And honestly, that's rarer and more valuable than raw talent alone."
He pulls an envelope from his jacket, offering it to me. "This is a formal scholarship offer. Full ride, State University, starting position guaranteed a real shot at earning next season. I know your family's going through a lot right now, moving, everything unsettled. I wanted you to have this in your hands tonight, something solid, something that's entirely yours regardless of anything else happening around you."
I stare at the envelope, hands actually shaking slightly as I take it, something enormous and overwhelming rising in my chest.
"Thank you," I manage, voice rough. "This means, I don't even know how to say what this means right now."
"You earned it," he says simply. "Every bit of it. Congratulations, Jake. And I hope everything with your family gets resolved safely, and soon."
He shakes my hand once and disappears back into the thinning crowd, leaving me standing there holding an envelope that represents everything I've worked toward since freshman year, arriving on possibly the most terrifying night of my entire life.
Penny appears at my side, glancing at the envelope, then up at my face. "Jake?"
"Full scholarship," I say, voice still shaking with disbelief. "State. He said," I stop, throat tightening. "He said surviving all this, all the chaos, actually made him want me more. Not despite everything. Because of how I handled it."
Something warm and proud floods Penny's expression despite everything else weighing on us tonight. "Jake, that's incredible. You deserve every bit of this."
I think about the last few weeks, my dad's arrest, losing the house, the constant fear, the threatening messages, Karen in that hospital bed, everything that's happened since that first four-in-the-morning phone call from Maren. I always thought surviving all of it would cost me something. My scholarship, my future, the life I worked so hard to build for myself outside of my family's collapsing world.
Instead, somehow, it built me into someone strong enough to actually deserve what I'd already earned. The hardest year of my life didn't take my future away. It forged the exact version of me capable of holding onto it.
"We should go," Penny says gently, glancing back toward the group still waiting near the exit, toward the patrol car idling nearby ready to escort us home. "Everyone's worried."
I nod, tucking the envelope carefully inside my jacket, and we hurry to catch up with the others, the whole group finally piling into cars under careful police watch, heading home together through the cold, dark night.
We're barely five minutes from the house when my phone buzzes hard against my leg, and I glance down automatically, expecting maybe Coach, maybe a congratulations text from Marcus.
It's from Detective Reyes instead, and the second I read it, my chest tightens straight back into the same fear I felt just an hour ago in that security office.
We found Penny's bag. It was left deliberately, dropped near the stadium's back entrance. Nothing missing except the birth certificate paperwork. But Jake, there's something else. A note was left inside, addressed directly to Penny. I think you both need to see it together, tonight, before anything else happens.
