Chapter 52 Chapter 52: Moving In With the Future Mother-in-Law
There was no way this was just a coincidence. The girl who had confronted him about not taking care of his family and causing his daughter-in-law’s disappearance was now in front of him, and her name was Selena as well. Could she be... his lost daughter-in-law?
"Are you Selena?" His voice trembled slightly. Selena pressed her lips together, saying nothing. By now, Keith had rushed over in shock and said, "Why are you the one who was stabbed?"
His heart raced in panic. It had been months since he had been able to find any trace of her, and he never expected to see her again under such circumstances.
From her wheelchair, Kelly spoke up, "I know you. You’re Brutus’s youngest son, aren’t you? The one lying here should have been me. Selena took the stab from that knife for me, risking her life. How could your mother be so cruel, treating lives like they’re worthless?"
As she finished speaking, Kelly began to cry. It was only then that Keith realized Selena had nothing to do with his father, and for some reason, he felt a sense of relief. However, seeing the wound on her shoulder, he couldn’t help but silently curse his mother’s ruthlessness.
Selena, however, paid little attention to Keith’s concern or Kelly’s emotional outburst. Her mind was solely focused on how to face old Mr. Sterling.
Suddenly, the old man spoke, "Everyone, please leave."
Hearing this, Uncle Victor pulled Keith out of the room. Selena glanced at Kelly, who finally gave in and allowed Sophia to wheel her out.
Now, only old Mr. Sterling and Selena remained in the room.
"You..."
Selena wanted to say something, but the old man stopped her. He said, "You don’t need to say anything, Grandpa understands. Many things can change, but the kindness in someone’s eyes never does."
He reached out to gently touch her head and sighed, "You’ve been through so much. It’s all Grandpa’s fault. I’m sorry."
Selena’s eyes turned red, but she tilted her head away from his hand and said, "You’ve got the wrong person. I’m not who you think I am."
She had to take revenge on William’s family; she couldn’t admit the truth to old Mr. Sterling just yet.
The old man withdrew his hand and let out a long sigh. Someone as experienced as him could easily guess Selena’s intentions in returning. He wanted to say that he would go back and discipline William, but in the end, he didn’t have the heart to utter such shameless words. If he had been able to discipline him, she wouldn’t be in this situation now.
Both of them fell into silence. Just then, noises from outside interrupted the moment. It turned out Balthazar had arrived and was demanding to see Selena.
Seeing Balthazar only confirmed old Mr. Sterling’s suspicions. He said, "Grandpa will make things right for you. Don’t worry."
Then, he turned to leave. As he passed Balthazar, he gave him a glance before signaling Uncle Victor to take Keith away. From the fact that Kelly and Selena knew each other, he could already guess their plan, but all he could do was sigh at the inevitability of it all.
Balthazar found it strange that old Mr. Sterling was here, but his concern for Selena outweighed everything. He rushed into the room, anxiously asking, "Are you alright? Does it hurt?"
Selena, startled by his intensity, quickly replied, "I... I’m fine."
"If you’re fine, then how did you get hurt? Who stabbed you? I’ll skin them alive!"
His sudden outburst left Selena speechless. Mrs. Winchester, who had accompanied him, couldn’t help but chime in, "That woman was mentally ill and attacked Selena’s friend. Selena jumped in to protect her, so it wasn’t her fault. Why are you yelling at her?"
How would her son ever get married acting like this?
Realizing his temper was getting the best of him, Balthazar took a deep breath to calm down, then gently took Selena’s hand to comfort her.
From her position by the door, Kelly saw this and quietly wheeled herself away.
Mrs. Winchester pulled her daughter away, leaving space for the young couple. Balthazar sat by Selena’s bedside, his heart aching at the sight of her bandaged shoulder.
"I’ve investigated the attack. The woman who assaulted you showed signs of mental illness after both her husband and child were in accidents. She claimed she couldn’t control herself when she attacked, but I don’t believe it was just a coincidence. It’s because your friend is Brutus’s mistress."
Suddenly, Balthazar leaned in close to Selena. Knowing she wasn’t good at lying, he forced her to meet his gaze and asked:
"Everything you’ve been doing has something to do with the Sterling family. First, you joined Kola to fight against BrightVerse Entertainment, and now you’re acquainted with Brutus’s mistress. What are you planning, Selena?"
In truth, Balthazar had long suspected some kind of grudge between Selena and the Sterling family, but it had seemed too vague for him to focus on. Now, in hindsight, he realized he’d overlooked something: the mother and younger brother she was helping were none other than the family of William’s ex-wife. Could this be why she was confronting the Sterling family?
Suddenly, a cold thought crossed Balthazar’s mind, and his expression darkened as he asked:
"Did you know I’m Amelia’s ex-boyfriend? Is that why you approached me?"
His voice trembled with anger as he asked the question, feeling as though he had been betrayed once again.
Sure enough, when Selena heard his accusation, she lowered her head, unsure of how to respond. Finally, she said softly:
"No, it’s not like that."
"Then look me in the eyes and tell me what grudge you have with the Sterling family!"
Balthazar’s sudden outburst made Selena even more anxious. She didn’t dare raise her head, not because she couldn’t lie to cover things up, but because she felt guilty facing him.
Seeing Selena avoiding his gaze, Balthazar clenched his fists tightly, his face contorted with anger. He desperately wanted to ask her why she had done this to him, but the words wouldn’t come out. How ridiculous that two women he had loved deeply had deceived him. He really was a fool.
