Jake
The alarm clock buzzed loudly, jolting me from my dreams. I groggily reached over, smacking the alarm until it died down, I rolled onto my back and sighed. I let my eyes wander around my room, taking in the small details that were so familiar; the worn dresser I had inherited from my grandfather, the bed I laid in from college. I blinked and sighed again. I had to get ready for work.
I rolled out of bed and stumbled into the bathroom, standing in front of the mirror as I looked for any sign of the night before. I had stayed up late, talking and laughing with Renee, Matt, and Aaron after our ordeal in the living room. I had felt such a feeling of contentment, the words of love, forgiveness, and understanding echoed in my mind. I smiled. Renee had forgiven Matt for kissing another woman and, in turn, Matt had promised to never do anything like that again. I believed him, and I hoped Renee did, too.
I quickly brushed my teeth and threw on my clothes. The sky was just starting to lighten, and the sun hadn't yet peeked over the horizon as I tiptoed past Matt's open and empty bedroom and towards Renee's room, poking my head in. Renee was snuggled deep under her covers, her breathing steady and even, and I watched her for a few moments before silently closing the door.
I grabbed my badge and gun and headed out the door. As I drove to the station I thought about the night before, and joy filled me. Were things finally back to normal? Could we resume where we'd left off before Matt's mistake? Things had finally been going well prior to Tameka, and I was glad that, hopefully, things would go back to normal.
When I arrived at the station, Hale greeted me as I walked in the door.
"You're looking much better this morning, boss," he said, a twinkle of happiness in his eye. "I'm glad to see you back to normal."
"Thanks, man. Things are better at home, for sure." Seeing my partner forced me to remember the death of that little girl, the one who'd been shot right in front of me. My heart constricted momentarily and I felt sick. After everything else, I'd almost forgotten about losing her. But I hadn't, not really. She lived in my subconscious rent-free, and I knew she would for the rest of my life.
"I have paperwork," I announced. "Holler if you need me."
Hale nodded, and I headed towards my office, making a mental note to check in with him later. As I sat down at my desk, the paperwork in front of me, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt. How could I be thinking about my personal life and the drama with my friends when I had lost the first victim in years just a couple of days ago?
I shook my head and forced myself to focus on the task at hand, and it wasn't until mid-afternoon that I finally pulled myself away from the computer to check my phone. There was a text message from Renee, asking if she could come eat lunch with me. Then there was a second text, announcing that she was already on her way. Grinning like a lovestruck fool, I set my phone aside and waited.
I couldn't wait to see her. My heart raced with anticipation as I thought of her beauty, the way she always seemed to understand me, and how her eyes had been filled with warmth and love when she smiled at me the previous night. She was the love of my life, my soulmate, and I still didn't know what exactly I'd done to deserve her.
When Renee arrived at the station, I met her at the door and took her to the break room, where we sat down with our lunches.
"I'm glad you came," I said, raising one of her hands to my lips. "I missed you."
She giggled, handing me my sub from the deli down the street. "You just saw me," she insisted, and I shrugged.
"Every moment gone feels like a billion years."
"Stop being such a sap," she teased.
I leaned in closer to her, my eyes locking onto hers. "I can't help it," I whispered. "I love you so much, Ren."
"I love you, too," she said, her voice soft and tender. "And I'm sorry about everything that's happened. You know that, right?"
I nodded, feeling a lump forming in my throat. "I know, Renee. But none of it has been your fault. You know that, right?"
"That'd debatable." Tears welled up in her eyes, and she leaned in to kiss me. Our lips met, and I felt a surge of passion course through my body. My hand slid up her back, pulling her closer to me, and I felt her hands in my hair, pulling me in even deeper. But just as things started to get heated, we were interrupted by a loud knock on the door. We separated, panting heavily, as Hale poked his head into the room.
"Sorry to interrupt, boss, but we've got a situation in the holding cells."
"What kind of situation?"
"An urgent one."
I glanced at Renee, whose brow creased with concern.
"Stay here," I told her. "I'll be back."
She nodded uncertainly as I stood and followed Hale out of the break room and down into the basement level towards the holding cells. As I followed Hale briskly down the hallway, I could hear shouting and screaming. Heart racing, I pulled out my gun and took a deep breath, readying myself for whatever was about to happen.
"The negotiator is here," Hale said to the small group of frightened people looking on. When I entered the room, I saw that one of the prisoners had somehow gotten hold of a knife. He was holding a guard hostage, and his eyes were wild with fear and anger. I recognized the prisoner immediately--he was a notorious gang member who had been arrested for drug trafficking and murder.
"Put the knife down," I said, my voice calm and steady. The prisoner just laughed.
"I don't need no hostage negotiator," he hissed. "I need to get out of here, and I'll do whatever it takes."
I could see the desperation in his eyes, and I knew that I needed to tread cautiously. Any sudden move could trigger him to act out his violent plans. I took a step closer, my gun still pointed at him.
"You don't have to do this," I said. "We can talk. We can find a way to resolve this peacefully."
The prisoner's grip on the knife tightened, and I could see the veins pulsing in his neck.
"You don't understand what it's like in here," he growled. "The system is rigged against us. They don't care about us, they just want to see us suffer."
I could hear the fear in his voice, the deep-seated anger and frustration that had led him to this point. I took another step forward, my hands outstretched, hoping to show him that I was there to help and not make things worse.
"I do understand," I said. "I know things are tough, but there's always a way out. We can find a solution that works for everyone."
For a moment, there was silence. The prisoner's eyes flickered, and I could see the hesitation in his face. Then, suddenly, he lunged forward, the knife flashing in the dim light of the cell.
I reacted without hesitation, instinct driving me to raise my gun and fire a warning shot into the air. The prisoner stumbled forward, his body quick as he raced towards the back of the cell, dragging the guard with him. The other guards surged in, a flurry of boots and shouts filling the room with chaos. I felt someone brush past me and saw glimpses of uniforms converging on the prisoner, but it was impossible to know if they had subdued him until everything was still.
Adrenaline was still pumping through my veins as I lowered my gun, my heart racing. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself as I surveyed the cell. The prisoner was now lying on the ground, his arms pinned behind his back by two of the guards. The guard he had taken hostage was shaken, but unharmed.
"Is everyone okay?" I asked, my voice hoarse. I stepped forward, my eyes locked on the prisoners. He was breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling with each ragged breath. But even as he lay there, his eyes burned with a fierce intensity, a reminder of the desperation and anger that had led him to this point.
"Take him back to his cell," I said, my voice low. "Make sure he's restrained properly."
The guards nodded, picking up the prisoner and dragging him out of the cell. As they left, I could hear him shouting and cursing, his voice echoing down the hallway.
"Thanks, boss," Hale said with a shake of his head. "That guy is fucking psycho. I thought for sure we'd lose another victim."
I let out a long sigh, feeling the tension slowly seep out of me. For a moment, I just stood there, trying to process everything that had just happened.
"It's alright," I said. "Everyone's safe. This time."
I turned to leave, intent on returning to Renee and the relative safety of the break room.
"Hey," I said, walking over to her. "I'm sorry about that. Are you okay?"
She nodded, her eyes softening as she looked up at me. "I'm fine. But what about you? Are you okay?"
I took her hand in mine, squeezing it gently. "Yeah, I'm okay. Thanks, baby."
Renee kissed me, her soft lips lingering on mine as a wicked grin rose on her face.
"Now," she whispered, nuzzling my neck. "Where were we?"
