Chapter 120 Your New Baby Brother
Chapter 120 Your New Baby Brother
The chaotic, agonizing hours of the night slowly ticked by in the hospital waiting room. Thomas had nearly worn a trench into the linoleum floor, and Diane was on her fourth cup of terrible hospital coffee when the heavy double doors of the maternity ward finally swung open.
David stepped out into the lobby.
The brilliant, usually composed doctor looked completely disheveled. His hair was a mess, his scrubs were wrinkled, and his eyes were completely red and shining with happy, exhausted tears. But in his arms, held with the utmost, trembling care, was a tiny, tightly wrapped package in a pastel hospital blanket.
"He's here," David choked out, a massive, watery smile breaking across his face as Thomas and Diane rushed over. "Claire did amazing. Everyone, meet Walker."
The grandparents absolutely melted, crowding around the new father to get their first look at the tiny, sleeping newborn. Walker had officially won the great Stark baby race.
But the victory lap was incredibly short-lived.
Exactly ten minutes later, the heavy double doors swung open a second time.
Owen stepped out into the bright lights of the lobby. The formidable Zenith CEO looked like he had just gone ten rounds in a heavyweight title fight—his henley was rumpled, and his hair was standing on end from running his hands through it a hundred times—but the look on his face was one of absolute, earth-shattering triumph.
Tucked securely against his broad, muscular chest was a second, tiny bundle of joy, sound asleep in a matching striped hospital beanie.
"Flint is here," Owen announced, his deep voice thick with emotion and pure, undeniable pride. He looked over at David, flashing a tired but devastatingly handsome smile. "Looks like Leona was just a few minutes behind you."
Hearing her father's booming voice, Olive immediately abandoned the plastic blocks on the coffee table. Still wearing her oversized designer sunglasses inside the hospital, the three-year-old scrambled right up onto the cushion of her waiting room chair so she could be taller.
She pointed a tiny, bossy finger directly at the bundle in Owen's arms.
"I wanna see baby," Olive demanded, her tone leaving absolutely no room for negotiation.
Owen let out a deep, rumbling chuckle. He immediately walked over to the chair, his storm-gray eyes endlessly soft as he looked at his oldest daughter. With slow, careful movements, Superman gently lowered his arms, bringing the tiny, swaddled newborn right down to Olive's eye level.
Olive carefully pushed her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose to get a better look. She stared at the tiny, red-faced infant, taking in his little button nose and the tuft of dark hair poking out from under his beanie. Her little brow furrowed in serious concentration as she officially assessed her new brother.
Deciding that she fully approved of the newest addition to their funny farm, Olive turned her head, looking over her shoulder at her little sister, who was currently holding onto Diane's pant leg.
"Wanna see the new baby, Hazy?" Olive asked brightly, enthusiastically waving her sister over to come meet their brother.
Owen's heart swelled until he thought it might actually burst right out of his chest. He looked at his two beautiful, curly-haired girls crowding around the tiny, sleeping boy in his arms, completely overwhelmed by the perfect, chaotic family he and Leona had built.
The transition from the chaotic, crowded lobby to the quiet intimacy of Leona’s private recovery room was exactly what the new family of five needed.
Leona was propped up against the pristine white hospital pillows, looking utterly exhausted but absolutely radiant. Tucked safely against her chest, tiny Flint was successfully nursing for the very first time, his little fists curled tightly in the soft fabric of Leona's gown.
The heavy wooden door clicked open, and Owen stepped quietly inside. He carried Hazel in one arm and held Olive’s little hand securely in his other.
The moment they got close to the bed, Hazel immediately spotted the tiny bundle in her mother's arms. She wiggled excitedly in Owen's grip, pointing a chubby finger toward the bed.
"Baby!" Hazel babbled happily.
Leona looked up, her dark eyes completely melting as she smiled at her daughters. "That's right, sweetie," Leona whispered, her voice thick with pure, exhausted joy. "That's your new baby brother."
Owen gently set Hazel down on the mattress and lifted Olive up to join her. Moving with surprising care for two energetic toddlers, the girls found their spots. Olive settled herself right on one side of Leona, leaning against her mother's arm, while Hazel crawled over to sit securely on the other side. They flanked Leona like two curly-haired, fiercely protective little guards, completely mesmerized as they watched Flint.
Standing at the foot of the hospital bed, Owen completely lost his breath.
Looking at the incredible woman who had just given him a son, and the two beautiful little girls sitting perfectly tucked against her sides, Owen knew his heart couldn't possibly hold a single ounce more love than it did right in that exact second.
His storm-gray eyes locked onto Olive. She was gently reaching out, her tiny finger tracing the edge of the soft blue hospital blanket wrapped around her new brother.
Owen thought about the cold porch at the family farm. He thought about the brutal courtroom, the slimy lawyers, and the termination papers signed without a second glance. And as he watched Olive look up at Leona with absolute, unfiltered adoration, a fierce, unbreakable vow settled deep into Owen's soul.
The daughter they had actively, fiercely chosen would never, ever know a single day where she wasn't completely, unconditionally wanted. The world could say whatever it wanted about biology or bloodlines, but looking at the beautiful, unbroken circle on that hospital bed, the absolute truth was undeniable.
Leona caught Owen's gaze, her dark eyes shining with the same unspeakable understanding. She reached out her free hand, palm up—an unspoken invitation—and Owen moved without hesitation. His rough, calloused fingers slid perfectly between hers, sealing the silent promise between them.
Flint chose that exact moment to let out the tiniest, most indignant squeak—clearly unimpressed with Olive's increasingly enthusiastic poking—and Hazel immediately burst into giggles. The sound was infectious, bubbling through the room like sunlight, until even Leona's exhausted laughter joined in, her shoulders shaking gently against the pillows.
