Chapter 39 Bidding Goodbye
ALYSSA’S POV:-
I didn’t want him to go, I regained my confidence in his presence, I found power that never existed in me before when he was near.
When I was at a stumbling point in my life, his absence would impact me too much.
I doubt I had the strength to fight this world alone left in me. I couldn’t.
“You guys take care of her, okay?” Vince told his parents playfully when he was about to leave.
“Of course, you don’t have to worry about anything. We are here for her,” Mrs. Lysander reassured him.
I was looking down, nibbling on my bottom lip nervously, holding my arm with discontent as he was observing me thoroughly.
When my eyes refused to twinkle, lost in my thoughts, his hands gradually crept on my shoulder, emerging a shiver from within.
Stiff, I was taken back, lifting my gaze and saw he pulled me into a hug. My heart skipped a beat. I blushed, staring at the gentleman, giving me a reassuring squeeze.
But, this time his hug only increased my bad omens.
I didn’t want him to leave.
“Don’t worry too much. Everything will be alright,” He whispered, flashing a soft smile.
Yet for his sake, I forced a smile and nodded back, “Mhm,”
“Take care, I will be back soon. Okay?”
“Okay, take care,”
Waving my hand weakly at him, I stayed outside until his car was out of my sight, fidgeting my fingers around my dress.
I could feel my heart thumping madly when he was gone, feeling an emptiness which I hoped to recover by going to work.
The second he was gone, Mrs. Lysander called sternly.
“Enough staying out. Come inside, to whom you are showing this devotion?”
Since my mind was on Vince, I failed to comprehend her context and went inside. Mr. Lysander also went to work, leaving the two of us.
I also went to my room to get ready for work as well and decided to place all my attention on work to keep myself distracted.
During lunch, I left him a bunch of texts.
‘Hey, have you arrived?’
‘Did you eat something?’
‘How are you?’
And a few more. To my series of messages, he simply gave me a call.
“My, Alyssa, so many texts? You could have called me.”
Suppressing a smile, I mumbled, “I didn’t want to disturb you,”
“You are not disturbing you. Yes, I have arrived. I have eaten, and I am fine. I just took a shower and now I'm going to take a nap before the meeting,” He chuckled, replying to all my questions in one composed breath.
Feeling abashed, I didn’t know what else to say. He noticed my hesitation, knowing through my silence that I felt awkward.
“Alyssa,”
“Yes?”
“Don’t hesitate to call me next time,” He spoke softly, soothing my heart instantly.
All awkwardness inside me vanished as I beamed, “Sure!”
“Great. So I am going to take a nap now. I will talk to you later… or is there something else you want to know?” He asked playfully.
“Nothing… you should sleep. I will go back to work too,” I replied shyly.
“Good. See. This day will pass before you know it just like the rest of the days,” He said, trying to be optimistic.
It was only 2pm. But to me, it felt like time had been frozen. My day was going extremely slow.
“Hmmm,”
“Okay, take care. Bye,”
“You too. Bye,”
After the call, I took a deep breath, working hard, overtime, completing the stack of files I left pending too.
I did everything in order to divert my thoughts yet all of it was completed by 6pm.
“Argh, shit,” Whining when I was done early, I realised using work won’t do me good so I went home.
Maybe watching some series or reading a book might help? Maybe talking to Mrs. Lysander will pass these halted moments?”
Humming to myself, I returned and freshened up.
“Where is Mr. Lysander?” I asked a helper.
“Mrs. Lysander sent him back to their mansion. She says she is enough,”
“Oh, okay,”
Shrugging my shoulders, I decided to have dinner but all the servants were gone, pots were empty.
Bewildered, I tried to open the pantry or fridge but they were locked, distressing me at this point. Why would anyone lock the food?
I knew his mother was a strict and disciplined lady but what was this absurdity?
Frowning, I saw Mrs. Lysander was in the lounge, reading a book, and went to her, calling her sternly.
“Mrs. Lysander,”
“Hmm?”
“What is it? Where is the dinner?”
She replied monotonously, flipping the page, “You should have come on time. No food after 6pm. Rules,”
Trying to control myself, I hissed, “This isn’t your home, Mrs. Lysander. What am I supposed to eat?”
“I don’t know, you should know management,”
“Fine I will order something for myself,”
Scoffing, I took out my phone but she pointed her finger at me. Flashing a dark smirk that signaled I was right about my terrible presages.
“I have told guards to not let anyone inside after you return. You cannot order food,”
My jaw dropped, arguing with her but she stayed unbothered, taking control of the home Vince labeled as ‘mine’ too.
“Why not?”
“How am I supposed to know who you are calling in my son’s absence?”
I blinked, thinking I heard her wrong, “What?”
“Of course. I have to keep an eye on you and be careful. When you can cheat on your first husband with Vince. Then why not on Vince with another man?”
Didn’t she… accept me? How could she say this? Didn’t their wrath settle?
“You can’t be serious, Mrs. Lysander. This is wrong.”
I was in disbelief at her ridiculous statements. This was absolutely wrong of her.
“Enough. I know what I am doing and as long as Vince is not here, you are going to abide by MY rules, girl,”
Announcing strictly, she refused to listen to anything I say and left me all alone in the lounge with an empty stomach.
