CHAPTER TWENTY TWO
Leila didn't waste a moment to pile on. She urged them to search me, and the guard promptly began ransacking my room, tossing my belongings aside without care. My sanctuary of calm had become a chaotic mess.
Diana insisted that they search my apron, convinced that I had hidden the necklace there. The guards spun me around and started searching my apron, still tied securely around my waist. Each passing second felt like an eternity as I watched their every move, my innocence hanging in the balance.
Their efforts, however, yielded nothing. "There's no necklace here," the guard reported to the Alpha, and a brief wave of relief washed over me. Yet, the storm of accusations still swirled around me.
Diana, her disbelief evident, questioned in utter confusion, "How is that possible? She's the only one who was in my room today! I entrusted her with cleaning, and I never allow any other maids inside my room. She must be the one who took it." Her voice held a note of desperation, as if searching for an explanation in this baffling situation.
I couldn't remain silent in the face of mounting evidence against me. My voice, though tinged with anxiety, found strength once more. "I wasn't the only one in your room! Leila was there too, supervising my work. Why don't you search her as well?" My words were a plea for fairness, for justice to be served in this bewildering ordeal.
Diana, however, fiercely defended Leila, her voice carrying unwavering loyalty. "Shut your mouth! Leila has served me for years, and she has never betrayed my trust in any way." Her words formed a shield of protection around Leila, deflecting the accusations that hung heavy in the air.
The Alpha, displaying a commitment to uncovering the truth, acknowledged the complexity of the situation. "If Leila was in the room too, it's only fair that we search her as well," he declared, his voice carrying the weight of authority. It was a decision that sought to balance the scales of justice.
Leila, though visibly shocked by the accusations, quickly composed herself and fervently defended her innocence. Her voice held an air of indignation as she declared, "I didn't take the necklace! I would never do such a thing!" Her words were a protest against the grave accusations that had been leveled against her.
The Alpha, unmoved by her protestations, remained resolute in his pursuit of the truth. He commanded Leila to lead the way, signaling that the search would extend to her quarters. The air was thick with tension as we all left my room, my footsteps echoing in silent determination as I followed behind. The truth had to be uncovered, and justice had to prevail.
Upon reaching the maids' quarters, a sense of anticipation hung in the air. The guard meticulously inspected Leila's belongings, each drawer and corner scrutinized for any sign of the missing necklace. Leila watched with a defiant expression, her arms crossed in defiance.
However, to my surprise, the guard's search turned up nothing. He declared with a note of finality, "There's nothing in here." The sense of injustice that had weighed heavily upon me began to wane, replaced by a glimmer of hope that my name would be cleared.
But I couldn't remain silent. The evidence, or lack thereof, suggested a startling turn of events. "Why not search her apron too, just as you did to me?" I suggested, my gaze fixed on Leila. It was a plea for thoroughness, for fairness in the pursuit of truth.
The guard found my suggestion valid and beckoned Leila forward. With an air of confidence, she approached, her voice dripping with righteousness as she declared, "You won't find anything. I told you I'm not a thief."
The moment was fraught with tension as the guard delved into her apron, the atmosphere heavy with anticipation. It was a pivotal moment in the unfolding drama, and I watched with bated breath, hoping that justice would prevail.
As the guard's fingers moved, a gasp escaped from Diana, and my heart clenched in apprehension. The guard pulled out a gold necklace, and my hopes sank. The necklace dangled from his fingers, a damning piece of evidence that spoke volumes.
"Is this what you're looking for?" the guard questioned, his eyes locked onto Diana, who appeared utterly confounded by this unexpected turn of events.
Diana stammered in response, "Ye.ye.yes, that's the necklace." It was now painfully clear that Diana and Leila had plotted this scheme to frame me and subject me to punishment. The truth had emerged, but the echoes of their deception would linger.
Leila's desperate pleas filled the room as she knelt before the Alpha, bewildered by the sudden reversal of fortunes. "Please, I didn't take that. I don't know how it got in there," she implored, her voice trembling with confusion and fear.
The Alpha's anger was palpable as he questioned her actions. "If you took the necklace, why did you accuse Hailey of taking it and wasting my time? Do I look like a joke to you?" His tone was stern, and his patience had worn thin.
"I swear to you, I didn't take it," Leila continued to plead, her desperation evident. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she turned to Diana, seeking her support. "Please tell him I'm innocent. I didn't do it, please."
Diana, feigning innocence, responded "Leila, I want to believe you, but the evidence... it's not in your favor."
Leila's heart sank. She had thought Diana, who was the architect of this plan, would vouch for her. Her eyes darted around, looking for any sympathetic faces among the pack members who had gathered to witness the unfolding drama.
Diana's response was far from what Leila had hoped for. She swiftly turned on Leila. "How could you do that? I trusted you, and you betrayed me," Diana said, distancing herself from the situation to avoid the Alpha's anger.
Leila was left in shock as she realized that Diana would not come to her aid. The consequences of her actions were closing in on her.
