Chapter 26 The Final Shot from Call
Red noticed figures running toward her from a distance. Gunshots echoed nearby. Her vision was blurry now, but she could still recognize the blue laser fire coming from Call’s gun.
The bullets bounced uselessly off the barrier protecting the ancient robot. Still, the gunfire distracted the beast enough to make it roar furiously.
That moment was enough for Flame to grab Red and drag her away from the monster.
Red stumbled badly against him.
The instant Flame touched her right arm, pain exploded through her body.
“Ow—!!” Red screamed.
“Oh crap! Sorry!” Flame panicked.
Carefully, Flame wrapped an arm around her waist and carried her farther away before the Tyrannosaurus’s tail could strike again.
Kit immediately rushed over, tears streaming down her face.
“We’re leaving,” she begged desperately.
“No.” Red shook her head weakly. “This is our only chance.”
“Don’t be stupid!” Kit snapped back.
Meanwhile, the robot remained focused on Call’s gunfire. Call retreated once the distance became safe enough before quickly regrouping with the others.
“Are you okay?” he asked Red anxiously.
“No,” Red admitted honestly. “But we still have to destroy the cables.”
Call frowned. “How?”
“The robot already shattered the protective surface.” Red pointed weakly toward the wooden beam jammed between the exposed wires. “I just didn’t get the chance to destroy them.”
Unfortunately, the Tyrannosaurus was now standing directly over the cables, its trapped legs blocking the area.
“I’ll shoot the ropes off its legs,” Call muttered.
“No!” Kit cried. “Then it’ll be free again!”
“But if breaking the cables restores the Metaphysics’ powers…” Call looked toward Flame. “Then we can kill that thing, right?”
“I think so,” Flame answered uncertainly.
Call licked his dry lips nervously.
“Get ready to run,” he warned them. “I’m shooting the cables.”
Kit stared at him in disbelief. “You’re using us as bait?!”
“Just get ready!”
Flame immediately grabbed Red’s waist and pulled her away, with Kit following close behind. At the same time, Call deliberately positioned himself where the monster could see him clearly.
The Tyrannosaurus roared violently and turned its massive body toward the fleeing group.
Call’s hands trembled with fear. Then he fired. The ropes binding the robot’s legs snapped apart.
Instantly, the monster’s attention locked onto him.
“No, Call!” Kit screamed in terror.
The Tyrannosaurus slowly rose back to its feet, growling as its massive jaws opened.
Red and Flame froze in horror. Neither of them knew how to help him. Red immediately pulled away from Flame, trying to draw the monster’s attention instead.
“Call, run!” she screamed desperately. “Don’t do it!”
But Call charged straight toward the creature instead. At the last second, he threw himself into a roll beneath the robot’s massive body.
Now he was directly above the exposed cables.
Call raised his rifle. And closed his eyes.
Suddenly, Red realized something. She had never scanned the condition of the cables.
Her instincts screamed in warning. “CALL, WAIT—!!!”
But it was too late.
The blue laser had already fired, directly into the exposed wires.
BOOM.
A massive explosion tore through the field. The shockwave was so violent that even the robotic monsters lost their balance.
The ground trembled violently beneath them as flames and smoke erupted from the destroyed cables.
Red’s entire body shook uncontrollably. Her trembling hand slowly reached toward the burning crater where Call had been standing.
“Call…”
Her eyes widened in horror.
“CALL!!! NO!!!”
