13: The Hunger That Burns
13: The Hunger That Burns
Isabella’s POV
The mirror had broken.
Not from a hit. Not from force.
It had broken from me.
From something inside me.
A slow, horrified realization crawled up my spine, sinking its claws into my skin.
This wasn’t just hunger.
This wasn’t just craving.
This was power.
And it was waking up.
\------------------
The first taste of power is the most dangerous.
The shattered mirror wasn’t just a warning.
It was a promise.
Something inside me was waking up, and the more I fought it, the stronger it became. It was no longer a whisper beneath my skin—it was a roar, relentless and undeniable.
I clutched the edge of the sink, my breath sharp and uneven. My fingers dug into the porcelain, seeking something solid, something real, but even the cool surface felt foreign beneath my touch.
Luca had done this to me.
His bite. His blood.
Him.
And now, I was becoming something else.
Something not human.
\---------------------
A deep, pulsing heat coiled beneath my skin, thrumming with each unsteady breath I took. It wasn’t just hunger anymore—it was something else, something more.
Something I couldn’t control.
My chest rose and fell too fast, my heart pounding like a war drum in my ears. I pressed a trembling hand against it, as if I could calm the storm raging inside me.
And then—the lights flickered.
The air shifted, thickened, a strange energy vibrating through the room.
I jerked my head up, my gaze snapping to the broken mirror. My reflection was fractured, distorted, twisting unnaturally in the shards.
And then I saw it.
For a split second—my own eyes flickered black.
Not just dark.
Void-like. Endless.
A cold dread slithered down my spine, my entire body tensing as I stumbled back, my breath catching. This wasn’t just a transformation. This wasn’t just some side effect of Luca’s bite.
This was something more dangerous.
Something I didn’t understand.
And Luca knew it.
\-----------------------
The bedroom door swung open without warning, and I barely had time to react before I saw him.
Luca.
He stepped inside with an effortless grace, his silver eyes locking onto me the moment he entered. He didn’t speak right away. He just watched me, studied me.
Like he was waiting.
Like he had expected this.
Then, finally, he exhaled softly.
"It’s happening faster than I expected."
My stomach dropped.
"You knew this would happen?" I snapped, my voice laced with anger, with something dangerously close to fear.
Luca stepped forward, slow and deliberate, his expression calm but unreadable.
I instinctively backed away.
He followed.
A predator, closing in.
Until my spine met the cold marble wall.
My breath hitched as Luca caged me in, his hands braced on either side of my head. He was close—too close. The scent of him curled around me, dark and intoxicating, like something forbidden.
"You were always meant to change," he murmured.
My fingers curled into fists, my nails biting into my palms as I fought the heat curling low in my stomach.
"You made me like this," I accused.
Luca smirked. "Did I?"
I hated the way my pulse betrayed me, the way my thighs pressed together despite the fury burning in my veins.
Luca noticed.
He always noticed.
His smirk deepened as he leaned in, his lips hovering just over my throat, close enough that I could feel the warmth of his breath.
"You think this is because of me?" he whispered, voice dark and taunting.
His fingers trailed up my arm, light and teasing, a slow drag of sensation that made my skin burn.
"Then tell me," he purred, "why does your body crave me?"
\-----------------------------------
His touch was fire, and I was burning.
I clenched my jaw, forcing my voice to stay steady. "I don’t crave you."
Luca chuckled, low and knowing.
"Lying to yourself won’t change the truth," he murmured.
His thigh nudged between mine, pressing just enough to make my breath hitch.
I hated the way my body reacted, the way heat coiled at the base of my spine, the way my traitorous pulse quickened beneath his touch.
Luca smirked. He could feel it—my resistance, my denial, the war raging inside me.
"You can fight it all you want," he whispered, his lips grazing the shell of my ear.
"But soon, you won’t be able to."
It wasn’t a threat.
It was a promise.
And I was losing.
Not just to Luca.
To myself.
To whatever was waking up inside me.
\-------------------------
Luca pulled back slightly, his silver eyes scanning my face, searching for something I wasn’t sure he would find.
Then—he reached for my wrist.
Before I could react, he caught my hand and pressed my palm against his chest.
The moment my skin met his—a shockwave tore through me.
A sharp, blinding heat erupted beneath my fingertips, spreading like wildfire.
The lights flickered violently.
The air around us rippled, bending, warping.
And Luca—
Luca stumbled back.
I sucked in a sharp breath, my pulse hammering in my ears. That had never happened before. Not to him. Not to a vampire.
Luca stared at me, his expression unreadable, his usual smirk wiped clean from his face.
And then, for the first time since I met him…
I saw it.
Fear.
It was only a flicker, a brief shadow in his gaze, but it was there.
His voice, when it came, was quieter than before.
Uncertain.
"You’re stronger than I thought."
