Chapter 58. Then Prove It
Lia
"You almost did," I admitted. "There were moments when leaving seemed easier than fighting."
His jaw clenched. "I don't blame you. I was impossible. Possessive and controlling and…"
"Scared," I finished. "You were scared of losing me like you lost Lyanna. I get that now. But Kai, you can't let fear rule you. It'll destroy us both."
"I know." He finally looked at me. "Theron taught you a lot. I can see it. Feel it through the bond. You're stronger now. More confident. More... complete."
"He did help me. I won't lie about that. The training, understanding my bloodline, it gave me tools I didn't have before." I pulled out the journal. "He gave me this. Everything the Silvermane Lunas knew about bond manipulation. How to control the power properly."
Kai stared at the journal like it was a weapon. "That's dangerous knowledge."
"I know. Which is why I need you to trust that I won't abuse it." I set it on the table between us. "I could use this power to control you. To manipulate our bond, or break it, or force you to do what I want. But I won't. Because that's not what I want from us."
"What do you want?"
"Equality. Partnership. A bond built on choice, not obligation or biology." I met his eyes. "I want you to see me as more than your mate or your Luna. I want you to see me as Lia. Just... Lia. The girl who's still figuring out who she is but knows she wants to figure it out with you."
Kai was quiet for a long time. Then he stood, moved to kneel in front of me, taking my hands in his.
"I see you," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "I see Lia, the girl who volunteered for a treaty marriage because she believed in fairy tales. Who survived my cruelty and kept fighting. Who transformed from human to hybrid and mastered it in weeks. Who faced down warriors and councils and other Alphas and never backed down." His grip tightened. "I see you. And I'm in awe of you. Every single day."
Tears burned my eyes. "Then prove it. When the council tries to limit me, stand with me. When I want to fight, let me. When I make mistakes, let me learn from them instead of locking me away. Trust me to be strong enough to handle whatever comes."
"I will," he promised. "Starting now. No more guards restricting your movement. No more decisions made without consulting you. No more treating you like something fragile that might break." He stood, pulling me up with him. "We're partners. Equals. In everything."
"In everything," I agreed.
He kissed me then, not the desperate, possessive kisses from before. This was different. Tender. Reverent. A promise sealed with contact instead of words.
When we finally broke apart, both breathing hard, he rested his forehead against mine.
"I need you," he whispered. "Not because I own you. But because I choose you. Every day. Every moment. You."
"I choose you too," I breathed.
What followed was the most honest we'd ever been with each other, physically and emotionally.
He undressed me slowly, his hands gentle, his eyes asking permission with every touch. When I nodded, he continued, peeling away layers until I stood naked before him.
"Beautiful," he murmured. "Every scar, every mark, every inch of you is beautiful."
I undressed him just as slowly, learning his body anew. The scars from battles, the tension in his muscles, the way he shivered when I touched certain spots.
When we finally came together, it wasn't about dominance or possession. It was about connection. About two souls finding each other in the darkness and choosing to stay.
He moved inside me with deliberate slowness, his eyes locked on mine, the bond pulsing between us with every thrust.
"I love you," he said. "Not because you're my mate. Because you're you."
"I love you," I gasped. "Even when you drive me crazy. Even when we fight. Even when, oh god, right there…"
He smiled against my mouth, angling his hips to hit that spot again. "Even when what?"
"Even when you're impossible," I managed, my nails digging into his shoulders as pleasure built.
"You make me better," he said, his rhythm increasing. "Stronger. More than I ever was without you."
"We make each other better," I corrected, meeting his thrusts.
When we came together, it was with the bond blazing between us, fully open, fully honest, fully chosen. Not a bond forced by treaty or biology, but one we'd fought for and earned.
Afterwards, wrapped in his arms, the fire dying to embers, I felt peaceful for the first time in weeks.
"Tomorrow will be hard," I said quietly. "The pack, the council, whatever Eastern Pack is planning…"
"Tomorrow we face it together," Kai interrupted. "No more secrets. No more going it alone. We're a team now."
"A team," I agreed, smiling into the darkness.
But as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't shake the lingering unease.
Because I'd seen the Eastern Pack scouts. Felt their attention.
And I knew, with bone-deep certainty, that whatever was coming would test us in ways we couldn't imagine.
Our bond was stronger. Our love was real.
But would it be enough?
Only time would tell.
