Chapter 159 Nothing Familiar
Chapter 159 Nothing Familiar
Rain
When I woke up, that guy was sitting there again, just watching me. Supposedly, this guy is my husband, but I don’t feel anything when I look at him. It’s just all a huge blank. He has pictures he is showing me, one at a time. It is hard to look at them and not be able to recognize people or places.
Also, he told me Mom was dead. Supposedly she died in a car accident. I can’t believe I would ever forget something like that. I don’t understand how I could forget getting married either, but there is that. I have seen the shaved section of my head and the dark stitches showing where they had to remove a piece of my skull and then put it back.
The face I saw in the mirror was not the one I remember. I looked much older. They said I was twenty, and in fact it was closer to twenty and a half, almost twenty-one. I think that is awfully young to be married. When the hell did we get married?
“Where’s my wedding ring?” I suddenly ask him as I look down at my hand.
“With you being in here, and injured, they removed all of your jewelry. I have your ring, and it’s ready for you whenever you get to come home. We have tattoos that were our rings as well. I look at the tattoo on my ring finger. I hadn’t ever thought I'd have a tattoo.” I nod; that makes sense.
He hands me another picture. This one is one of him and me, as well as another girl I don’t recognize. We are wearing fancy clothes, but I don’t remember any of this. “Where is this and why the hell am I wearing a dress? I hate dresses.”
He chuckles, “Yeah, I know that. This is actually something that you need to know about. This is how you and I met at first. Your mom and my dad dated, and then got married. We were steps, but we never really saw each other as that, so when we got older and things developed between us, we had some issues at first, but since we are not really related, and we just loved each other so much, they gave us their blessing.” My eyes are huge. He was or is my stepbrother?
I look at him really hard. I don’t have any memories of him whatsoever. So, I don’t have memories of him as a stepbrother, or a husband, or a boyfriend. I have nothing. Surely though, my mom would have let me know if she had a problem with it. I can’t imagine that I would have stayed with him if she had. I can’t imagine her not whisking me away from him no matter what if she had issues with me being in a relationship with him in any way.
That hurts as I think about her. It was always her and me. I can’t imagine not having her in my life anymore. I can’t imagine her being gone. At least I still have some memories of her while I was growing up. I can feel the tears running down my face again, thinking about her being gone.
“Where’s your dad? Are, or I guess were they still married when she was killed in the car accident?” He nodded, and he swallowed, and I wondered at that.
“He was with her; they both died in the car accident. They were still married when it happened.” My eyes got huge, and without thought I reached out and took his hand.
He looked down at my hand and smiled, “Oh, God, I am so sorry. I can’t believe she’s gone, but I bet it’s like that for you as well.”
He squeezes my hand, “I have had a couple of years to adjust to it, sweetheart. You are just now finding out about it all over again, so I am sure right now it’s really painful for you.” I nod and let out a huge breath.
“Who is the other girl?” He has a sudden flash of hostility.
“That is my sister, and your stepsister, Zoey. She and you never got along; actually, she didn’t get along with anyone. We haven’t seen her in quite a while. She ran off to Europe with her boyfriend and cut off all contact right after our parents died.” I blink at that.
“Wow, okay, this is a lot. I can’t believe I can’t remember any of this crap.” I rub my hands over my face again.
“Okay, well, how about we take a break for now? I don’t want to overwhelm you. You are trying to absorb so much, and you have just woken up from being in a coma and having a brain injury. So, we need to take this in stages. You have a huge amount of things you need to know. Some that are more important than the others. I just wanted to see if the furthest back memories with you and your mom joining our family would help spark something.” I nod.
“How about you and I just chill out. I am sorry; I know the food here sucks, but I can try and see if I can sneak you in some better food. Then we can watch some television and just relax for the rest of the night. You probably still need to rest as well. You got me hooked on documentaries and docudramas.” I chuckled.
“Yeah, I have liked those for a really long time. My mom used to tell me I was too old of a soul for such a young body when I liked this stuff, and heavier books I would read all the time.” He smiled.
“You and I both shared a love of Tolstoy when we first met.” I smiled at that, knowing I did like that author.
“I didn’t have very many friends, actually. Most of the kids in school thought I was weird. I had told my mom I wanted to have a slumber party for my birthday because I wanted to prove to them that I was normal. She told me she was worried that they would hurt my feelings.” I shrug.
Sade grabs my hand and squeezes it again. “Not weird, unique, and it was so much their loss that they never got the opportunity to be your friend and get to know you.” I smile at him a bit.
“Okay, so what should I go and get us for dinner if I can sneak it by the nurses or they give me permission?” I think about that.
“I think I would really like a bacon cheeseburger and some fries.” He chuckled.
“Then, that is what I will go and get you. I will be back in just a bit. Why don’t you try to rest until I get back?” I nod, and he bends over and kisses the top of my head before he leaves the room.
