Chapter 6 Under the Radar, Slipping
I did not ever want to piss off the man who was behind me. I felt the cold rage slipping from him as he stood behind me. Twice now this jock was being yelled at. Twice in front of me. Mr. Griffen stood close behind me I could smell his mint aftershave. Squaring off with Luke did not scare me in the least bit. But something in Mr. Griffen made me back down from a fight and move out of his way. As soon as I was out of the way Mr. Griffen got into Luke’s face. The look Luke had was worth it.
“What the hell do you think you are doing, Luke?” Mr. Griffen yelled at him.
“Nothing much, sir just some fun teasing,” Luke said as he looked at the ground.
“Just some fun teasing? Yeah right. Looks a lot like you were going to walk straight into her trap and look like the biggest idiot in this school,” Mr. Griffen flashed me a knowing look, and I could not help but smirk. Something about that look he gave me seemed so familiar. It was probably because I often gave that look a lot when I was a sidekick to my parent's superhero missions, they gave me. Probably did not help the fact he had red hair like me and green eyes. I missed my old looks, but I did tell myself I had to do everything possible to stay under the radar.
“What?! No way a little girl like her could beat me.” Luke gawked at me like he could not believe Mr. Griffen would even suggest such a thing.
“Trust me. She has talent. It is clear by the way she stands. Her feet and legs are in perfect form to toss you flat on your back before you can blink. She could easily fight off mutants and be a superhero someday. Mark my words. That is if her smart mouth does not land her in bigger trouble first.” He smirked as he said.
Generally, all superheroes and villains have some sort of mutant genetics. But we still consider them human. Superhumans but still humans, the things that we call mutants are so far gone from being human that they are barely recognizable. So, we call those who were once human but no longer have any humanity left in them. Not all mutants have powers, but some do. That is not what makes them dangerous. It’s their bites that make them dangerous. Once bitten by any or scratched by some you will turn into one. Depending on your genetics it can take days to months for it to happen. There is no current cure for a bite or scratch. We have been close only once. There was a girl 18 years ago who survived 1 year after being bitten before turning. They tried using her DNA to see if they could come up with a cure but no luck there since she died. Some think suicide others think murder, or an experiment gone wrong.
“Let us just see if she can even Ace the physical exam.” Luke scoffed.
“She will. If not, she will be transferred to home economics.” He smirked again with a knowing look, and it was starting to get really annoying. What was with him? He can clearly see I am capable, but there is something else. I know it.
Well, I was going to pass anyway, but now I am really going to pass just to prove a point. Oh well, I guess for this, I will not stay under the radar.
“Luke if you do not want to be suspended on the first day of school and risk getting kicked off the football team. You walk away. Right now,” Mr. Griffen ordered leaving no room for argument.
“Yes sir,” Luke mumbled as he walked away, looking defeated in some type of way.
“You best watch yourself here, and not try to start any fights... miss?” Mr. Griffen said.
“Hawks... Elizabeth Hawks sir.” I answered.
“Hawks? Right.” He replied as he started to walk away. I could not help myself, but I had to.
“And sir, I do not start fights. I finish them.” I replied, smirking a bit.
He turned and looked me over. Assessing me for something. What I do not know but I knew he was figured out something about me.
“I bet you do, but it is not always wise to be looking for one either. You never know what one could be hiding.” Replied Mr. Griffen as he strode away.
I watched him walk off before sitting back down. Something was different about Mr. Griffen that made him really stand out to me from the other teachers. I hope I can learn more about what it is. Just as I sat back down Cindy joined me.
“What was that about?” Cindy asked.
“Seriously! What was that?" Bartise chimed in behind me taking a spot next to me.
“Mr. Griffen stopped Luke from getting made a fool of in front of the whole school.” I stated matter of fact.
“Yeah right!! He would never Mr. Griffen loves to see people get knocked on their buts especially in LOTLAS” Bartise chuckled.
“Yeah, that’s true, but he has been acting differently since homeroom. He actually stopped Luke from making fun of me and outing me before I could tell Elizabeth first." Cindy said.
“Really!!? That guy can be a huge jerk. I wonder what changed this year speaking of which you should probably tell her about you before she tries to fight you Bartise” Cindy said hiding a smirk.
“Whaaa? Why are you mad at me for Bethy” Bartise asked, shocked I would be upset with him.
“What is your deal in using me? If you like someone just tell them!” I said outright and when I did, he burst out laughing.
“I was not using you because I like someone. I am just a flirt, and it was fun teasing you, but honestly, it was annoying my ex-best friend. I think he likes you.” Bartise said chuckling a bit and I felt some of my frustration bubble down.
“Who?" I slightly stand up from my chair and I lean in closer to Bartise to hear his response. "I am new, no one really knows me so who could possibly have a crush on me?" I ask and begin to sit back down and Bartise opened his mouth to respond, but before he could answer me someone kicked my chair out from under me. Thankfully my reflexes helped me from falling on my butt and making a fool out of myself.
“What the hell was that for?” I asked angrily looking for the jerk who did it.
“Sorry little mouse I guess I need to be more careful as I walk by,” Ezra said without a care in the world like he did not just do that on purpose. Jerk.
