Chapter 12

Simon Smith ran three red lights, speeding to the testing location. He looked at the test report in his hand. At the very bottom, it clearly stated the name of the corpse: Laura Burke.

Simon Smith suddenly had tears in his eyes. His lips turned pale, and even his fingertips trembled. "You're saying the corpse is Laura Burke? How is that possible?" The stark black and white print, along with the official stamp, was indisputable. He simply refused to believe it. He couldn't accept that the person he had always despised was suddenly…

The person in charge of the testing rolled his eyes. Outside, people said that this young master Smith didn't care at all about Miss Burke. Plus, he had been publicly flaunting his affection for Hollie Owen recently. Who would do such a thing to their loved one? It seemed that this young master Smith had indeed changed his heart.

"The corpse is definitely Mrs. Smith's, and the ring also belongs to her…" That ring was the only one of its kind in the world. The inner band had my initials engraved on it. It had been custom-made by Simon Smith from a top designer. There was only this one piece.

However, he had forgotten. He thought it was just an ordinary style. Yes. He had long since stopped caring. How could he remember the way he used to love me to the death?

Simon Smith didn't believe it; he crumpled the test report in his hand. "How can this be?! How could she be dead?" Given the state the corpse was found in, it would have been odd if she hadn't died.

"I only locked her up for three days. How could this happen…?"

"The corpse's mouth was glued shut with super glue, her throat was completely blocked by it, and there were even remnants of sulfuric acid in her stomach. Her internal organs were completely damaged. It's hard to imagine what you did before she died, Mr. Smith. Just how much do you hate your wife?"

Indeed. How much did he hate me? Enough to want me dead. What had I ever owed him? We had been considered the model couple for ten years. Now, we had become two people who despised each other.

"It shouldn't be like this! You must be lying to me! I want to see her! Take me to see her…"

There was an unexpected tone of pleading in Simon Smith's voice. He had shed his once lofty, cold demeanor, now appearing like a stray dog in despair.

I was dead. He should be happy about this; now he could openly marry Hollie Owen, pampering her just as he had with me. He could give her everything. But why did he show no signs of joy on his face? Instead, it seemed like he was… regretting?
