Heavy Suspicions

Heavy Suspicions
Romain
The whole pack seems to be on high alert.
They're on the lookout for rogues—flyers are pasted all over with promises of rewards for those who catch any alive. Hiding so close to Iron Claw is a risk we can't afford.
Then again, it could be our salvation.
We're so close it could be considered suicidal. Why would they assume we're here? Things have certainly changed since the last time I was here. An intimidating number of Gammas are patrolling the area, walking in groups so they don't get jumped.
I'm not sure when or where I'll find the gap that'll allow me through. The road to Soren's house is so heavily guarded that not even a bird could pass by undetected.
My wolf senses Soren waiting. Biding his time. Though, I'm unsure of what he's waiting for. Is it me? Emmalee? The opportunity to become the Alpha who squashes the rogues once and for all?
Another truck is driving toward us with Gammas in the back, and I step away from the tree I'm hiding behind carefully when it stops several feet away. The Gammas climb down the truck just as those of us watching start to turn around.
We haven't been spotted but it's still a risk. We outnumber them but any noise would attract the attention of all the Gammas in the area, and that would be bad for us. I whip my head left and meet Fred's eyes. He nods at me and jerks his head in the opposite direction before he starts walking.
I join him moments later and he says to me, "I have a plan. Mind if I share it?"
"I'm all ears. We need a plan to get us into that building."
I'm all out of ideas. Waiting seems to be the only safe option—what else can be done when they're all over the place? My plan was to wait for an opening and slip inside. Be it when they change rotations, move to another area, anything.
But I'm aware that's time-consuming and we could get caught while waiting.
Fred nods. "I think I have the perfect one but we'll have to act now. You see that truck?"
"What about it?"
"Capturing the guards and donning their uniforms seems like a solid plan. And before you mention the noise they'll likely make, I think we should take the risk. There are enough of us here and it could take under two minutes, not longer."
Theoretically, this plan works perfectly. But the risks are numerous.
"I don't want anyone to get hurt."
Garith, who's been listening closely, approaches us and nods. "I think that's a good plan, Romain. We take the risk."
Fred nods. "We all know why we're here. Don't worry. We're all fighting for a common cause."
Ultimately, I agree. I don't want my fear to impede anyone from getting us in. Positioning ourselves, we move forward. The Gammas are standing close to the tree line, all of them silent as they look around. It's unnerving, knowing they aren't distracted.
Slowly, we approach I look right and see Garith giving silent orders to the men who were too far away to hear the plan. I stop behind a tree and place my hand on the rough bark as I watch. The fear of being caught is coursing through me but I'm determined.
We all are.
Fred looks at me as if for approval and when I catch his eyes, I nod. He raises his hand—the signal—and counts down from three. When his index finger is lowered, we burst forward silently, intent to kill.
The Gammas stare back at us with stunned faces and barely have time to react. As a matter of fact, I noted fear in their eyes. All twelve of them are dragged into the woods and savagely beaten for their uniforms. Unfortunately, we know we can't let them live.
I'm dragging one of them by the leg, jaw clenched as I hope he won't make a sound. He doesn't. Whimpers leave his lips but they're not loud enough for the others to hear. I slam a rock against his head before letting it drop into the dirt. Quickly, I remove his uniform, leaving him in underpants.
A sense of shame takes root in me but I remind myself why I'm doing this.
He didn't make a sound.
In fact, none of them did.
As I put on his clothes while discarding mine, my mind starts to spin while the others celebrate as silently as they can. Fred walks up to me and whispers, "Told you we would make it happen, didn't I?"
I nod at him but deep down, I want to tell him that I found this whole thing strange. Did we stumble upon a truck with the most inexperienced Gammas imaginable?
What the hell went on?
"Now we take the truck to the pack house. They'll never guess who we are. They've never seen our faces."
Abandoning the bodies behind us, those of us with uniforms get on the truck while the rest follow us, intending to hide in the woods closer to Soren's house. I'm next to Fred, who's behind the wheel, and we're speeding down the road. My mind is spinning. I can't seem to get that Gamma's fearful expression out of my mind.
Fred nudges me with his elbow and asks, "What's on your mind?"
I keep my eyes on the road. I don't want to make my fears known when everyone is elated about our victory. However, this also makes me think about how my need to prioritize their feelings could backfire on us all. How to distinguish between paranoia and a genuine, believable fear?
Before reaching those gates, we have to pass the border of Gammas and enforcers who are spread around, their vehicles blocking the sides of the road. This is the part that gets my heart beating fast—what if they know we're not the Gammas we killed somehow?
Getting caught now would be devastating. And deadly.
Fred slows the car, not saying a word to us. An enforcer approaches us and I thank the goddess that I don't recognize him.
There's no guarantee he doesn't know our faces, though. Most of us here were in the prison.
"Back so soon?" he asks.
Fred says, "We were told to."
"By?"
"The other enforcers."
The man nods. I don't detect a trace of suspicion in his eyes but dislike how he mentioned us coming back so soon. So, he remembers when this truck drove past? Does he remember the faces of the others?
Something tells me he does and that there's something seriously wrong here.
"What are you doing around these parts? Heading up to the house?"
"It's our shift now."
The man laughs. "Got confused, did you?"
"You bet."
He gives us both a pointed look and then waves for us to drive through. Fred visibly relaxes and said, "That was a close one."
I'm still not convinced.
In fact, I'm more certain than ever that that enforcer and those Gammas knew exactly who we were.
They were told to let us through.
Which means Soren is expecting me.
