Chapter 45

The ship rocketed away from Nebari Prime, engines roaring as they pushed into the dark expanse of space. Selene gripped the controls tightly, her knuckles white. The adrenaline from their escape still pulsed through her veins, but she knew it wasn’t over.

Lucas Raine never gave up.

Dante sat beside her in the cockpit, scanning the radar. “Bad news,” he muttered. “They’re following us.”

Selene didn’t need to ask who “they” were. The Syndicate wasn’t about to let them slip away so easily.

Kade groaned from the back of the ship, still holding his injured shoulder. “I’m getting real tired of these guys.”

Wren pulled up a map on the navigation screen. “We need a place to hide. Somewhere off-grid.”

“Suggestions?” Selene asked.

Xara, still gripping her blaster, leaned against the wall. “There’s a dead zone near the Tarsis Nebula. No law, no surveillance.”

“Sounds perfect.” Selene set a course, pushing the ship’s thrusters to their limit. “We just have to make it there alive.”

The Chase

Alarms blared. The ship rocked violently as a blast hit the rear shields.

Dante cursed. “They’re firing!”

Selene jerked the controls, maneuvering the ship into a sharp dive. “Hang on!”

Outside, three Syndicate fighters closed in, their weapons glowing as they prepared to fire again.

Kade, wincing through the pain, stumbled toward the weapons panel. “I got this.” He activated the rear cannons, sending a barrage of laser fire at their pursuers. One of the fighters exploded, debris scattering into space.

“That’s one down,” Kade muttered.

The second ship dodged and fired back. The Aquila’s shields flickered dangerously.

“We can’t take much more of this,” Wren warned.

Selene’s mind raced. If they kept flying in a straight line, they’d be picked off before reaching the nebula.

“Xara,” she called. “What’s near us?”

Xara scanned the star map. “There’s an asteroid field two clicks away.”

Selene grinned. “Perfect.”

She yanked the controls, sending the Aquila into a sudden turn. The ship shot toward the asteroid field, weaving between massive chunks of rock.

The Syndicate fighters followed, but the tight space made it harder for them to maneuver. One clipped an asteroid, spinning out of control before slamming into another rock.

The final fighter stayed on their tail.

Selene’s pulse pounded. She dodged and twisted, trying to shake them, but they were too good.

Kade fired again, but the enemy pilot was fast, dodging every shot.

“We need to end this,” Dante said.

Selene’s eyes narrowed. “Hold on.”

She cut the engines.

For a split second, everything inside the ship went weightless. The Syndicate fighter shot past them, unable to stop in time.

Selene fired the thrusters, flipping the ship around.

Dante didn’t hesitate—he took the shot.

The Syndicate ship exploded.

Silence filled the cockpit.

Selene let out a slow breath. “That was too close.”

A New Threat

They emerged from the asteroid field, heading straight for the Tarsis Nebula. The glowing clouds of gas and dust surrounded them, making it impossible for scanners to track them.

But before Selene could relax, Wren’s voice cut through the silence.

“We have a problem.”

Selene turned to her. “What now?”

Wren pointed at the screen. “That nebula? It’s unstable. Too much energy buildup. If we stay too long, the ship’s systems could fry.”

Selene clenched her jaw. “So we either risk the nebula or wait for more Syndicate ships to find us.”

Kade winced as he sat down. “I vote nebula.”

Xara nodded. “Better to take our chances than deal with Lucas again.”

Selene made her decision. “We go in.”

The Aquila entered the nebula, the swirling clouds surrounding them in eerie colors. Lightning crackled in the distance, sending waves of static through the ship’s systems.

Dante checked the controls. “We’re losing sensors.”

Selene kept her hands steady on the controls. “Just keep us moving.”

Suddenly, the ship jolted.

“What was that?” Xara asked.

Wren’s face went pale. “Something’s pulling us in.”

Selene’s heart pounded. “What do you mean?”

Wren tapped the screen. “There’s a gravitational anomaly. A massive ship—hidden inside the nebula.”

Before anyone could react, their comm system crackled to life.

A deep voice spoke.

“Aquila, you’ve entered restricted space. Power down your weapons and prepare to be boarded.”

Selene’s eyes widened. This wasn’t the Syndicate.

“Who are they?” Dante asked.

Kade’s expression darkened. “I have a bad feeling about this.”

Outside, through the thick nebula clouds, the outline of a massive warship came into view.

They were trapped.

Unexpected Allies

Selene’s mind raced. Who were these people? Pirates? A secret military force?

She pressed the comm button. “We don’t want trouble.”

The voice replied, “Too late.”

A bright beam of energy locked onto their ship, dragging them toward the warship’s hangar.

Wren whispered, “We are so dead.”

The Aquila settled onto the landing pad with a heavy thud. Armed soldiers surrounded them, weapons aimed.

The crew exchanged glances.

“Play it cool,” Selene murmured.

The ship’s doors opened, and they stepped onto the platform.

A man approached—tall, silver hair, wearing a high-ranking uniform. His piercing eyes scanned them.

“I am Admiral Orin,” he said. “And you’ve just entered the Dominion’s territory.”

Selene stiffened. The Dominion. A powerful faction that operated in the shadows, neither ally nor enemy to the Syndicate.

Orin’s gaze locked onto her. “You’re running from the Syndicate.”

Selene didn’t deny it. “They want something we have.”

Orin nodded. “Then perhaps we have a common enemy.”

Selene exchanged glances with her crew.

Orin’s lips curled into a smirk. “Welcome to the Dominion.”

The Choice

Inside the warship, Orin led them to a large chamber. The walls were lined with advanced technology, unlike anything Selene had seen.

Orin sat down, his eyes studying them.

“We’ve been watching the Syndicate’s movements,” he said. “They’ve grown too bold. We plan to strike.”

Selene crossed her arms. “And you need us?”

Orin chuckled. “You have something the Syndicate wants. That makes you valuable.”

Selene frowned. “What’s your offer?”

Orin leaned forward. “Help us bring them down, and we’ll make sure they never come after you again.”

Silence filled the room.

Dante whispered, “That’s a big risk.”

Xara folded her arms. “But it might be our only chance.”

Kade sighed. “If we say no, what happens?”

Orin smiled. “Then we let you leave. Straight into Syndicate territory.”

Selene’s heart pounded.

They had fought to survive for so long. Running wasn’t working anymore.

It was time to fight back.

She took a deep breath.

“We’re in.”

Orin grinned. “Good choice.”

As Selene shook his hand, she knew this was just the beginning.

The war with the Syndicate had truly begun.
