Chapter 32

The Aquila floated within the silent breadth of space, its crew still catching their collective breath from the Syndicate attack. It had been close-run indeed-the asteroid field saving them. Selene was sitting in her quarters with soft hums of the ship all around. On her shoulders sat the weight of their mission so squarely.

The prototype itself was safe but not less significant because of it. It can change everything-tips the scale of power. But at what cost?

A knock at her door interrupted her thoughts.

"Come in," she said, straightening in her chair.

Dante stepped in, his usual smirk absent. "You okay?"

"I'm fine," Selene replied, though her tone said otherwise.

Dante sat across from her, his dark eyes studying her. "You don't have to carry all of this alone, you know.

Selene sighed, running a hand through her hair. "It feels like I do. This isn't just about us anymore. It's about every person the Syndicate has crushed. We can't afford to fail."

Dante leaned forward, his voice steady. "We won't fail. We've come too far to back down now."

Selene gave him a small smile. "Thanks, Dante."

In the engine room, Wren was back at work, her tools spread out across the floor. The prototype sat on the workbench, its glow casting eerie shadows.

Xara entered, her arms crossed. “You’ve been staring at that thing for hours. Figure anything out?”

Wren didn’t look up. “This tech is leagues ahead of anything I’ve seen. It’s like they combined science and art.”

“Art that kills people,” Xara muttered.

"Perhaps," Wren said, "but it is also a masterpiece. The person who created this was a genius."

"Can we use it?" Xara asked.

Wren hesitated. "That's the problem. We don't understand how it works fully as yet. If we activate it without knowing, we could blow ourselves up-or worse."

\---

Later, the crew had assembled in the command room. At the head of the table, Selene stood; at the center lay the prototype, glowing.

We need to decide our next move," she said. "The Syndicate won't stop coming after us."

"We could go dark," Xara suggested. "Find a place to hide until we figure out how to use this thing."

"We can't afford to hide," Dante said. "The longer we wait, the stronger they get.

Selene nodded. "I agree. We need to strike back, but we have to be smart about it. Wren, how much more time do you need to understand the prototype?"

Wren shrugged. "Days? Weeks? I'm not sure. This isn't exactly in the manual."

"Then we'll buy you some time," Selene said. "Xara, plot a course for the nearest neutral zone. We'll lay low and regroup.

As the Aquila charted its course, Selene found herself wandering the ship. She ended up in the observation deck, staring out at the stars.

Dante found her there, his steps quiet. "Can't sleep?"

"Too much on my mind," Selene admitted.

He leaned against the wall, his gaze soft. "You're doing the right thing, you know. Leading us. Keeping us together."

Selene turned to him, her face a mask of conflict. "Sometimes I wonder if I'm leading us to our deaths."

Dante shook his head. "You're giving us a chance. That's more than most people get."

They stood in silence for a moment, the weight of their choices hanging in the air.

\---

The next day, alarms blared through the ship.

"Selene, we've got company!" Xara's voice came over the comm.

Selene ran to the cockpit, finding Xara frantically scanning the monitors.

"It's not the Syndicate," Xara said with a tight voice. "It's a Coalition fleet."

Selene's heart sank. The Coalition was supposed to be their ally, but alliances had grown gray in recent years.

"Can we evade them?"

"Not without them noticing," Xara replied. "They're already locking onto us."

\---

Minutes later, a transmission came through. A no-nonsense officer showed up on screen.

“This is Commander Voss of the Coalition. Identify yourselves and prepare to be boarded.”

Selene stepped forward. “This is Captain Selene Vega of the Aquila. What’s the meaning of this?”

“We have reason to believe you’re in possession of classified Syndicate technology,” Voss said. “Surrender it immediately.”

Selene’s blood ran cold. How did they know?

"Even if we did, why would we turn that over to you?" she replied, tone even.

"You don't have a choice," Voss said. "Turn off your engines and prepare for boarding."

Selene muted the transmission, looking to the rest of the crew. "Suggestions?"

"Run," Xara said immediately.

"That'll just make us look guilty," Dante argued.

"We can't afford to spend time on this!" Wren exclaimed. "If they find the prototype, we're finished."

\--

How's That?

Selene made a decision. "Xara, plot a course out of here. Dante, to the weapons bay. Wren, secure the prototype. Now!"

The crew sprang into action.

The engines of the Aquila roared as Xara pushed them to their limits, dodging the Coalition ships that began firing.

\---

The fight was fierce. The Coalition ships were more armed, but the speed and maneuverability of the Aquila kept them in the battle.

Orders were called out by Selene, her voice calm amidst the mayhem.

"Dante, hit their engines. We have to slow them down."

"On it," Dante replied, firing accurately.

\---

In the engine room, Wren worked at stabilizing the prototype. The device pulsed with energy, reacting to the stress the ship was under.

"Stay with me," Wren muttered, flying her hands over the controls.

\---

A hit sent the Aquila reeling, throwing her crew off their feet.

“Shields are down to 40%!” Xara shouted.

“Keep us moving!” Selene ordered.

\---

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the Aquila broke free. The Coalition ships were left behind, their engines disabled by Dante’s expert aim.

The crew let out a collective sigh of relief.

“Everyone okay?” Selene asked.

“Barely,” Wren replied, wiping sweat from her brow.

Selene turned to the crew, her expression fierce. “We’ve made it this far. We’re not giving up now.”

\---

After that, the crew had reassembled in the command room. The prototype sat in the middle, its glow a reminder of their mission.

"This thing is more dangerous than we realized," said Selene. "But it's also our best hope."

The crew nodded, their resolve firm.

Whatever dangers lay ahead, they would meet them together.
