Chapter 39: Hidden job
Lawrence's POV
I was mad when I saw how close my wife was to this man. Yes, I don’t care, even if they’re cousins. It makes me uncomfortable. The way he looks at me, I can tell that he is mad at me. My wife coughs.
"I'm sorry for the delay. Our director told me to come over and get a cap—I mean, Sir Arnaldo here. He filed for leave of absence but HR hasn’t approved it but here he is…" Scarlet replied. The way she looks at Arnaldo, it makes me suspicious. My wife crosses her legs and looks at this lady.
"Did you know that you look interesting in my eyes? Cousin, you said you’re here because he agreed to your request?"
Her cousin sighed and glared at Scarlet. "You should’ve met me somewhere! My goodness!" he roars to Scarlet. He didn’t even hide his madness. I guess he doesn’t feel ashamed of my presence here. That woman, named Scarlet, wasn’t scared at all.
"I don’t care. We have to go back to America before six this afternoon, Sir Arnaldo. Don’t make this hard for me," she says.
My wife laughs. She enjoyed how this lady controlled her cousin. “You should’ve used your eyes, cousin. If the other won’t work, then someone will make it work,” she meaningfully says.
“Don’t tell me you are here because of your ex-fiancée who will get married tomorrow? Should I kidnap her to make you go back to America?” Scarlet says. I stopped eating and looked at her. She looked serious when she said those words. The heck.
“Not a bad idea, actually. Use someone else’s dead body to make them believe that she died,” Justine added.
I was stunned by how their conversation changed completely. What the heck! How can she suggest such a thing so naturally? I gulp.
“Care to explain how this conversation turns nasty?” I growled.
They all look at me. I can sense that these three understood each other. I’m the only one who is fucking clueless here. “You’ll know, honey,” Justine says.
She places her hand on mine and lets go. “Oh please! I’m glad you already took a hiatus and became reserve or else you’ll be my other problem. Can you both leave my love life alone?” Arnaldo says. Scarlet looks at my wife. She realizes something shocking in the end.
“Wait a minute. Who are you? How come you seem to know something? Sir Arnaldo, you know the rules, right?” she says.
I held my wife’s hand and pulled her closer. I’m glad the chairs were small couches. It won’t disturb everyone just in case I pull her chair closer. Scarlet looked at me, I think she glared at me. Giving me warning glances. I met her gaze.
“Don’t even try. You didn’t know what I’m capable of,” I growled. I can see my wife, who has been staring at me. I didn’t take my eyes off Scarlet until she looked away herself.
“Honey, relax,” Justine says. Arnaldo sighed. He flicks Scarlet’s palm and speaks.
“Don’t even try to touch her. You can’t even win a single duel with me. You’ll never win against her as well. She’s my mentor,” her cousin declares. I was lost in their conversation again. What the hell is going on here?!
“What did you say, Sir Arnaldo?” Scarlet ask.
“Meet Blue Spiderlily,” he murmurs. His voice was so low that I almost didn’t hear him. Blue Spiderlily? What is that, an alias?
I look at her. “She’s that legendary…? Oh my gosh! I’m your fan, madam!” she exclaimed.
But her tone was low yet her excitement was written all over her face. The rest of the lunch was nothing but a puzzle for me. Scarlet, Arnaldo, and Justine can only understand the rest of the conversations they had.
“Thank you for treating us, Mr. Edwards. Cousin, we have to go. I need to speak with this woman,” Arnaldo says. He drags Scarlet with him by holding her arms as they walk away.
I am now driving the car because I decided that we should visit the place that gives me peace. Justine grabbed an unfamiliar phone and she called someone. “Hello, director? It’s me.” The way she pauses, I know the person she’s talking with was speaking on the other line.
“Yes. I’ve been doing fine and I just got married. Anyway, I called regarding Arnaldo’s decision. I have already met him here. Give him the time he needs. It will be a problem if he works in such state,” she says. I made a U-turn and drove at a faster speed. I wish I could hear that person’s reply.
“I know. A girl came and she’s telling him that you sent her to pick Arnaldo up. My grandmother already misses her grandson. Let him gather his thoughts and heal himself here. I also request for Scarlet to stay as well,” she stated. I look at her briefly.
She smiled and laughed softly. “You’re the best director. Trust me on this, okay? Arnaldo won’t quit. You know the reason why,” she says.
After a minute or two, their conversation ended. We’re only ten minutes away. She keeps quiet until we reach the edge of the hill, where I build a small garage for my two cars. I opened the car door on her side as soon as I could. She notices the stairs behind the garage. I grab her palm.
“I have so many questions. You can tell me lies about the truth as we walk on the stairs until we reach the peak of this hill.”
“Don’t tell me you bought this whole hill? You act like you are familiar with this place. You even park in that area,” she says.
She stops walking up the stairs and looks back. “Yup. I bought it and there are several hectares around. I have a small ranch where cows, horses, and other animals are being taken care of.”
I continued walking and so she is. “I knew it,” she says. I have to ask now.
“What happened a while ago? I mean, I have heard so many things that make me curious. Explain it to me,” I demanded. She sighs and doesn’t look at me.
“My cousin’s job was to be one of the secret agents of the FBI." There are agents that are on the field and can do minimal investigations and arrests, but you know what secret or special agents do,” Justine stated.
We’re just a few steps away from reaching the peak. “That’s why Blue Spiderlily sounds like an alias for me. I never thought you were a secret agent. Is that the reason why you suddenly became sexy and fit? I’m sure you lose weight because of the training you have to go through,” I replied.
We reach the peak and she sees the flower garden and there are bonsai trees as well. In the middle, there’s two apple trees. There’s a swing on those two apple trees. There’s a small lodge on our left side.
“What a beautiful place! I love it, hon! ” she says. She let go of my hand and started touching the flowers.
I bite my lower lip and turn around. I have to calm my fucking self or else she’ll see me blushing! That’s not cool at all!
"Come here, hon!" she calls.
I turn around and she’s already on the apple tree. I looked at her as I walked closer. Justine is already under the shade of the trees but why is she shining in my eyes?! "Here!" she presented.
I didn’t notice that she’s holding a stem of bellflower behind her. I meet her eyes, bewildered. "Why are you giving me this flower? Are you even aware of the meaning of the meaning of these flowers meaning?" I ask. I know the meaning too well. I want to know if she’s even aware of it.
"It symbolizes affection and everlasting love. Another one is integrity, which you have. Is it wrong if I mean it?" she asks.
