Territory Tensions

Glass shattered as a chair flew through the meeting room window. Outside, wolves from both packs faced each other, teeth bared and muscles stiff.

"This is Western territory!" shouted a black wolf with a scar across his muzzle. "Your hunters have no right to be here!"

An Eastern wolf stepped forward, her red fur bristling. "We were tracking food for the wounded! Or would you rather they starve?"

Nova jumped between them, her white hair flying as she pushed both wolves back. "Stop this! We're supposed to be united!"

"United?" The Western wolf spat on the ground. "Look around you. Our alpha is missing. The Eastern alpha hasn't left the healing den in three days. There is no unity anymore."

More wolves gathered, breaking into two clear groups—Western on one side, Eastern on the other. The peace Lucas and Elijah had built was crumbling.

Nova turned frantically to Kael, who stood on the steps of the meeting den. "Do something! They'll listen to you—you're Elijah's brother!"

Kael's face was pale with worry. "I've tried. But without the bond between Lucas and Elijah..." He trailed off, looking at the crystal fragments they'd gathered after Lucas's desperate act. The pieces lay dull and lifeless in his hand.

Three days had passed since Lucas crushed the crystal against his chest. They'd found him unconscious at the ritual sites, no sign of Marcus or Elijah anywhere. Now Lucas lay in a coma-like state, his body covered in glowing marks where the crystal bits had entered his skin.

A commotion at the edge of the area caught everyone's attention. Wolves parted as a figure limped toward them—a woman with black hair streaked with blue, her violet eyes searching the crowd.

"Raven," Kael breathed, running forward to help the Eastern pack's former healer.

Raven pushed away his helping hand. "Where is he?" she asked. "Where is Elijah?"

"We don't know," Nova revealed. "He disappeared after Lucas—"

"I know what happened," Raven interrupted. "Marcus took him. I saw it."

Silence fell over the fighting packs. Nova stepped closer.

"You saw it? How? Where were you?"

"Tracking Marcus," Raven said. "I've been following him for weeks. I knew he was planning something big."

The Western dogs growled suspiciously. Raven had once been Elijah's lover, and many still questioned her loyalty after she'd left when Lucas and Elijah's bond first formed.

"If you were tracking Marcus, why didn't you warn us?" Kael asked, his voice hard with suspicion.

Raven's eyes flashed. "I tried! I sent messages! But who listens to the rejected mate when the grand love story of two alphas is playing out?"

Nova crossed her arms. "What do you know about where Elijah is now?"

"Marcus took him to The Void," Raven said. The words sent a chill through the crowd. The Void was a place of legend—a pocket between worlds where magic ran wild and dangerous.

"That's just a myth," one wolf called out.

"It's real," Raven maintained. "And I can lead you there—but only if you agree to put me back in my rightful place when Elijah returns. As his chosen healer and advisor."

Nova's eyes narrowed. "You're bargaining? Now? When both our alphas are in danger?"

Raven smiled coldly. "I'm being practical. Something you should understand, Nova. After all, your pack has already decided the alliance is over, haven't they?"

Nova flinched, looking at the split wolves. It was true—without Lucas and Elijah to join them, the old rivalries were returning stronger than ever.

Kael stepped between them. "Stop this. If you know where Elijah is, Raven, you need to tell us. Now."

"Fine," Raven said, taking a folded piece of paper from her pocket. "Here's the map to The Void's entrance. But I'm the only one who can read the markings. You need me."

Kael took the map, studying it with narrowing eyes. "This isn't like any map I've seen before. The landmarks keep... shifting."

"That's how The Void works," Raven explained. "It's never in the same place twice. That's why Marcus chose it—and why he's been preparing for months."

Nova looked over Kael's shoulder at the strange map. The lines seemed to move slightly when she wasn't looking straight at them.

"We need to send a rescue party," she decided. "Small, fast. Get in, find Elijah, get out."

"And Lucas?" Kael asked quietly.

Nova looked back at the healing den where Lucas lay unconscious. "We need to figure out what he did with that crystal first. Why he broke it against his own heart."

As if on cue, a cry came from the healing den. Thomas stumbled out, the black veins across his skin glowing with a strange blue light—the same color as the crystal had been.

"It's happening," he gasped, falling to his knees. "The doorway is opening. Lucas knew... he was trying to stop it."

Nova rushed to Thomas's side. "What doorway? Thomas, what do you know?"

"The First Ones," Thomas whispered. "They need the bonded alphas to open the doorway between worlds. Marcus has Elijah. If he gets Lucas too..."

"That's why we need to move fast," Raven cut in. "Before it's too late."

Kael helped Thomas back to the healing den, then turned to face the split packs. "Listen to me! Both of you! Your alphas would be ashamed to see you fighting while they're in danger. We need to work together to save them."

For a moment, no one moved. Then a young Eastern wolf stepped forward. "I'll go."

Slowly, others joined—two from the West, another from the East. Nova felt a small spark of hope.

"I'll lead the rescue party," she said. "Kael, you stay here with Lucas. Keep working on those crystal fragments."

Raven smiled, a look that didn't quite reach her eyes. "I'll guide you to The Void. But we need to leave now, before the entrance moves again."

As they prepared to leave, Nova pulled Kael aside. "I don't trust her," she whispered. "Something feels wrong."

"I know," Kael agreed. "But she's our only lead to finding Elijah."

"There's more," Nova said, her voice dropping even lower. "The pack alliance is fracturing fast. If we don't bring both alphas back soon..."

"I'll handle things here," Kael promised. "Just hurry."

Nova nodded, then noticed something strange. The crystal fragments that Kael had collected were starting to glow again, pulsing softly with blue light.

"What's happening to them?" she asked.

Before Kael could answer, Lucas's voice suddenly rang out from the healing den—not in pain, but calling a single name: "Elijah!"

They ran inside to find Lucas still unconscious, but the crystal marks on his skin were glowing brightly, matching the pulse of the fragments.

"The bond," Thomas said weakly from his bed. "It's still there. Trying to reconnect."

Raven appears in the doorway, her face unreadable. "We need to go. Now."

"Wait," Kael said, studying the glowing pieces. "Maybe we don't need the map. If the bond is active, we might be able to use it to find Elijah."

"That would take too long," Raven snapped. "The Void entrance won't wait."

Nova looked between Lucas and the eager Raven. Something wasn't right.

"Give me one minute," she told Raven, then knelt beside Lucas. "Can you hear me?" she whispered. "We're going to find Elijah. Just hold on."

She turned to leave when Lucas's hand suddenly shot out, grabbing her wrist with startling strength. His eyes stayed closed, but his lips moved, forming words too quiet to hear.

Nova leaned closer. "What is it?"

"Don't trust," Lucas whispered. "Raven is... working with... Marcus."

Nova's blood turned to ice. She pulled away and walked quietly toward the door where Raven waited.

"Ready?" Raven asked, frustration clear in her voice.

Nova nodded, her face carefully blank. "Ready."

As she followed Raven out, she caught Kael's eye and gave him the smallest of nods. A warning. A signal.

Because if Lucas was right, they weren't following a plan to rescue Elijah.

They were walking into a trap.
