The Hidden Prophecy

The scroll in Kael's hands burst into blue flames. He yelped and dropped it, jumping back as the old parchment burned on the library floor. But instead of going to ash, the flames froze in place, forming glowing words that floated above the scroll.

"What did you do?" Nova ran to his side, her white hair flying behind her.

"Nothing! I just read it!" Kael pointed at the floating blue words. "Look!"

The fiery letters spelled out: When sickness spreads through corrupted blood, the bonded alphas shall face their biggest trial.

Nova's eyes widened. "This is about Lucas and Elijah. About what's happening now."

Before Kael could answer, a crash came from outside. They ran to the window just in time to see another freed wolf fall in the middle of the training field, his body jerking wildly as he shifted between human and wolf forms.

"That's the eighth one today," Nova whispered.

Kael clutched the door frame, his heart beating. "We need to find my brother. Now."

Lucas pressed a cold cloth to Thomas's face. The fever had gotten worse overnight. Black veins now spread across Thomas's chest, pulsing with each hard breath.

"Hold on, old friend," Lucas whispered. "We'll fix this."

The healing den door burst open as Elijah rushed in, his copper hair wild and his eyes blazing with fear.

"Three more of my pack just collapsed," he said, dropping to his knees beside Lucas. "Same symptoms—fever, uncontrolled shifting, those strange marks appearing."

Lucas nodded grimly. "It's spreading faster."

Elijah put his hand on Lucas's shoulder. The touch sent a wave of warmth through their mate bond, briefly easing the knot of fear in Lucas's chest.

"You need to rest," Elijah said. "You've been here for two days straight."

"I can't leave him," Lucas said, looking at Thomas. "I already failed him once."

"You didn't—"

The door flew open again as Kael and Nova rushed in, both breathing hard.

"We found something," Kael said, his voice shaking with excitement. He held up a scroll that glowed with blue light. "An ancient prophecy about 'the bonded alphas' trial.'"

Nova stepped forward. "It mentions a sickness in corrupted blood. Like what's happening now."

Lucas stood quickly. "What else does it say?"

"Most of it is written in the old language," Kael said. "But there's one part we could translate: 'What was bound by hate can only be cured by love.'"

Elijah frowned. "That's not exactly helpful."

A cold wind suddenly swept through the room, extinguishing the lights. In the doorway stood Lyra, her blind white eyes glowing and her hair changing from black to silver to blue.

"The prophecy seeker returns," she said, her voice echoing weirdly. "As the darkness divides from within."

Lucas stepped toward her. "Lyra, do you know what's happening to our wolves?"

Lyra walked into the room, her moves jerky and unnatural. She reached out and touched Thomas's face.

"The first ones hunger," she whispered. "They feed on division. On hatred. On old wounds never truly healed."

"The first ones?" Elijah asked. "You mean like what Thomas said? The ones that came before wolves?"

Lyra turned her blank eyes toward them. "Before all. They sleep in the spaces between worlds. But someone has called to them. Someone has made them a promise."

"Marcus," Lucas growled.

"The betrayer opened the door," Lyra agreed. "But only the bonded alphas can close it."

A scream from outside made them all jump. More wolves were getting ill.

"Tell us how to stop this," Lucas demanded, grabbing Lyra's shoulders. "How do we save our pack?"

Lyra smiled, an eerie look on her usually serious face. "Your pack? Or your packs? Even now, you think of them as separate. That is why you fail."

She pulled away from Lucas and reached into her coat. From it, she drew a small crystal—the same one that had formed when Lucas and Elijah's powers first combined during the fight with Marcus.

The crystal pulsed with twisting shadows and flames.

"The cure lies in the bond," Lyra said, placing the crystal on Thomas's chest. "In what you have begun but not completed."

The crystal sank into Thomas's skin, disappearing totally. For a moment, the black veins receded. Thomas took a deep, clear breath—but then convulsed violently, his eyes flying open to show solid black orbs.

"The hunger grows," he said in a voice not his own. "They are coming."

The crystal shot back out of his chest, hitting the wall with such force it cracked the stone. It fell to the floor, now glowing with an angry red light.

"What just happened?" Nova asked, backing away from Thomas.

Lyra sighed. "The bond is incomplete. The power unstable."

"We need to see Aria," Elijah said suddenly. "She knows all the ancient prophecies. She can help us decipher the rest of the scroll."

Lucas nodded, finally pulling his eyes away from Thomas. "I'll go with you."

"Both alphas cannot leave," Lyra warned. "The pack must not be left unguarded. The first ones are already here, walking in the skins of your wolves."

A chill ran down Lucas's spine. "What do you mean, 'in the skins of our wolves'?"

Before Lyra could answer, Nova gasped and pointed at Thomas. The black veins were moving under his skin, writhing like snakes toward his eyes. His mouth opened in a quiet scream.

"Go," Lucas told Elijah. "Find Aria. Bring her here. I'll stay with the pack."

Elijah paused, then pulled Lucas into a quick, fierce kiss. "Be careful. Our bond makes us stronger, but it also makes us vulnerable. If something happens to you—"

"Nothing will happen," Lucas promised. "Now go."

As Elijah left with Kael, Lyra approached Lucas once more.

"The crystal," she said, pointing to where it had fallen. "Keep it with you. It is the key."

Lucas picked up the crystal, cringing as it burned his palm. Inside, shadows and flames fought for control.

"The key to what?" he asked.

Lyra's eyes suddenly rolled back in her head. She grabbed Lucas's arm, her nails digging into his skin.

"When the first ones take a mate-bonded wolf," she whispered hurriedly, "they gain the power of the bond. They must not take you. They must not take him. Or all is lost."

She released him and stumbled toward the door.

"Lyra, wait!" Lucas called after her. "What happens if they take one of us?"

Lyra turned one last time, her face twisted in fear Lucas had never seen before.

"Then they can walk between worlds," she said. "And the hunger will never end."

As she vanished into the dark outside, the crystal in Lucas's hand gave a violent pulse. At the same moment, every infected wolf in the healing den opened their eyes—all solid black, all looking directly at him.

And Lucas realized with horror that he was alone with them.
