Aftermath

Thomas fell to his knees, shaking. For the first time in fifty years, he could feel the forest floor beneath him without the darkness clouding his thoughts. Tears streamed down his face as he touched the dirt, the leaves, the wood of a nearby tree.

"I can feel it all again," he whispered. His voice sounded strange to his own ears - human, not the growl of the monster he'd been forced to become.

Lucas knelt beside him, putting a gentle hand on his shoulder. "We need to get moving, old friend. The others are waiting."

The trip back to the pack lands was slow and difficult. Freed wolves stumbled along, some still dazed from decades of rot. The bigger ones helped carry those who couldn't walk. Nova led the way, her white hair easy to spot even in the dim morning light.

"Will they remember me?" Thomas asked as they neared the Western territory line. "It's been so long."

"Some will," Lucas answered. "And those who don't will learn who you are. You're coming home, Thomas. That's what matters."

At the border, a crowd had formed. Word had spread fast about the fight at Marcus's fortress. Wolves pushed forward, looking for loved ones among the rescued.

An old gray wolf broke from the crowd with a howl that stopped everyone. Her eyes were clouded with age, but she moved with amazing speed.

"Thomas? Thomas, is that you?"

Thomas froze. "Sarah?"

The old wolf changed to human form - an elderly woman with silver hair and deep lines on her face. The same face Thomas remembered, just marked by time.

"They told me you were dead," she whispered, reaching out with shaky hands. "Fifty years I've mourned you."

"Sarah," Thomas repeated, his voice breaking. He stumbled forward into her arms.

Lucas turned away to give them peace, his throat tight. All around, similar meetings were happening. Families finding each other after decades apart. But not all searches ended happily. Many of Marcus's victims hadn't survived, or were too damaged to save.

Elijah appeared at Lucas's side, his orange hair dusty from travel. "The Eastern wolves are settling in. We should talk."

They walked to the meeting room, exhaustion making each step heavy. Inside, Kael had maps spread out on the table, marking areas that needed patrolling.

"Marcus could be anywhere by now," Kael said without looking up. "We need to search every--"

"Not yet," Lucas cut him off. "The pack needs rest first. We pushed them hard to get here."

"But Marcus is still out there!" Kael's fist hit the table. "We can't just--"

"Kael." Elijah's voice was soft but firm. "Lucas is right. We'll be no good against Marcus if we're dead on our feet."

Lucas sat heavy in a chair, feeling the weight of the day crushing down. "I want guards doubled tonight. No one goes anywhere alone. Tomorrow we'll start tracking him."

The door opened, and Nova entered with a tray of food. "Eat. Both of you. I won't have our Alphas collapsing from hunger."

Lucas hadn't noticed how hungry he was until the smell of meat hit him. He wolfed down several chunks before coming up for air.

"Marcus's warning," he said between bites. "What did he mean about the next verse of the prophecy?"

Elijah shook his head. "I don't know. We need to talk to Aria. If anyone understands the prophecy, it's her."

As if called by her name, the door swung open again. Aria Moonwhisper stood there, her white hair with purple streaks hanging loose around her shoulders. Her opalescent eyes seemed to glow in the dim room.

"I was hoping to find you both here," she said, entering without permission. Her voice was calm, but Lucas caught the worry beneath it.

"Aria." Elijah stood. "We were just talking about you."

"About the prophecy," she nodded. "I heard what happened at the fortress. Word travels fast among the Omegas."

Lucas pushed away his empty plate. "Marcus said something about the prophecy having more lines than we know. Is that true?"

Aria's eyes dropped, a rare sign of shame from the old Omega. "Yes."

The single word fell like a stone in the quiet room.

"What?" Elijah's voice rose. "You knew there was more and didn't tell us?"

"I told you what you needed to know to fulfill the first part," Aria replied. "The prophecy that brought you together. That helped you defeat Marcus's first plan."

"But there's more." Lucas stood now too, anger making his shadow magic flicker around his hands. "And you kept it from us."

Aria didn't flinch at his show. "The complete prophecy would have been too much of a burden. Some knowledge can paralyze instead of help."

"Tell us now," Elijah ordered. "We deserve to know what we're facing."

Aria sighed, suddenly looking every bit of her eight hundred years. "Very well. The complete prophecy speaks of three trials the united Alphas must face. The first was uniting your packs and stopping Marcus's corruption. That part you've completed."

"And the second?" Lucas asked, though part of him didn't want to know.

"The second trial speaks of 'darkness dividing what love united.' Marcus knows this part well. He plans to use it against you."

A chill ran down Lucas's spine. He reached for Elijah's hand reflexively, their fingers intertwining.

"What exactly does it say?" Elijah's voice was steady, but Lucas could feel him shaking through their bond.

Aria closed her eyes, repeating from memory:

"When shadow and flame join as one, The first trial will be done. But beware the darkness that divides, Turning love against itself from inside. What was joined will break apart, When doubt finds root in either heart."

Silence filled the room after her words faded.

"There's a third verse too," Aria added softly. "But that comes later. If you survive the second."

Lucas's grip tightened on Elijah's hand. "Marcus thinks he can break us apart."

"He will try," Aria agreed. "And he has power we don't yet understand. The way he disappeared from the fortress... that was ancient magic, something that shouldn't be possible."

A knock at the door stopped them. Thomas stood there, looking shaky but determined.

"Sorry," he said, "but there's something you need to know. About Marcus."

Lucas waved him in. "What is it?"

Thomas touched his temple. "When he controlled me, I saw things. His plans, his memories. There's a place he spoke of, a shadow realm he called 'The Void.' That's where he's gone to recover his strength."

"Can we reach this place?" Elijah asked.

Thomas nodded slowly. "Yes, but..." He stopped, swaying slightly. Lucas rushed to steady him.

"What's wrong?" Lucas asked, concerned by the sudden pallor in Thomas's face.

Thomas's eyes rolled back, his body going rigid. When he spoke again, it wasn't his voice. It was deeper, colder.

"Did you think it would be that easy?" Marcus's words came from Thomas's mouth. "You fools. I'm still inside him. I'm inside all of them. And soon, I'll be inside you too."

Thomas collapsed, his body shaking furiously.

"Help him!" Lucas yelled as Aria and Elijah rushed forward.

But as they reached for Thomas, every freed wolf throughout the area began to scream.
