Chapter 14 The Edge Of Sanity

By the time he was done taking his anger out on the wall, his knuckles had become bruised and bloody, and he felt as though his wrist had broke, though he knew it would heal.

So caught up in what he was doing he hadn't noticed that Julianna had been watching him the whole time. He figured that she had gone after him when he stormed out. Turning around, seeing her stood there, scared out of her mind, all of his anger melted away.

"Julie..." He said, his voice not above a whisper.

He thought that now she had seen just how bad his temper could get, she would turn away from him for sure. Why would she want to be with a violent little brute like him? He thought to himself unhappily.

"Marcus..... please..... calm down." She pleaded, her voice nothing but a desperate whisper as she moved cautiously towards him. Even from a short distance he could see that she was visibly shaking. He was sure that this was his doing, that he was responsible for her terror and he hated that thought with everything he had.

"Oh.... Julie, I'm so sorry. I didn't know you were watching me. I just..... I couldn't keep it all in, I had to let go of all this rage, otherwise I'd be no help saving Joshua." He explained, though it was more of a pleading cry.

Finally, his anger seeped away and was replaced by a great sadness and despair. It was then that he finally broke.

Dropping to his knees, he screamed. He just couldn't bear the pain anymore. He bit his lower lip as it trembled uncontrollably when he felt Julianna's arms around him. Losing control, he buried his head in her shoulder as painful cries escaped his lips. He had never felt so broken. So hopeless. So unstable. All this had started with one little secret and now, it was life threatening.

Eventually, Marcus somehow managed to calm himself down, just as Eric joined the two outside.

"You ready to go little brother?" Eric asked, picking up the scent of a tidal wave of emotions coming from both Marcus and Julianna.

He gave a silent nod, as Julianna helped him to his feet, her arm around his waist as she could feel the wobbling of his feet, telling her he was unsteady. In return he slipped his arm around the? back of her neck, resting it on her shoulder blades as they made their way through the deserted streets of Moonsong Valley. Marcus had no clue what the time was yet the dark blue night sky, lit with a thousand stars and a crescent shaped moon, told him that it was getting pretty late. Next to him he could feel Julianna shiver in the cold air, for some reason making him wonder why he as a werewolf couldn't feel the cold, and also wonder how far away Eric's living quarters were.

When they reached the cemetery, Marcus realised that the older boy must live somewhere in the woods. As they reached the end of the cemetery and the entrance of the woods, he pulled Julianna closer to him. With Layla and Joshua already in danger, he didn't want to even let her out of his sight. He would protect her at all costs. He just wished he hadn't failed before at protecting his favourite people. Maybe then they wouldn't be in this mess. Quickly, he brushed the thought aside. Now was not the time for self hatred. Now was the time he would come up with a plan to rescue his best friend and his sister. Even if he was killed while saving them, he didn't care as long as they were safe.

After what felt like forever, they reached the place that Eric called home. It was nothing but a small cabin, similar to that which you would see in a horror movie. The windows were blackened with filth and grime, and the wood was old and rotting away from years of withstanding rain and thunderstorms. With a creak, the door opened when Eric turned the handle.

The inside of the cabin was much more put together than the outside. It had a nice, pleasant homely feel to it. There was no TV or anything, however there was a sofa, a small table for dining and a little kitchen. Behind the sofa was a trunk, that appeared to be locked. On the right of the little kitchen there were two doors. Presumably the bathroom and bedroom, Marcus thought as he took in his surroundings.

"So.... what now?" Julianna asked, flopping on the sofa in exhaustion.

"Now...... we hatch a plan." Marcus replied, feeling a slight spark of the old him as he said that, though it faded quickly as he began thinking about what they were in for.
