Chapter 126 126

Chapter 126 126
Was he just trying to calm me down and reassure me because he cared, or was this a calculated move? Was he just trying to get me through this specific moment, distracting me from the reality of what returning to Silver Fang actually meant, just so he could achieve some bigger goal? I felt a cold shiver of doubt start to crawl up my spine. Maybe the kindness was just a temporary fix to ensure my cooperation.

I had to stop myself. I literally had to cut my own train of thought before it spiraled any further into a dark place I couldn't get out of. Adrian has changed, I chanted silently to myself, making it a mantra to drown out the doubt. He is my mate. He chose to come for me. He wouldn't hurt me intentionally. Not again. I repeated it over and over, trying to make the words feel like a solid shield against the ghosts of the rejection.

Adrian seemed to sense the internal battle I was fighting. Without saying a word, he reached out and pulled me closer to him, his arm wrapping around my shoulders in a way that felt both protective and possessive. I let myself be moved. I obligated, sinking into his side and resting my head against him. I made a conscious effort to let the last of my lingering doubts and fears slip away, exhaling them into the quiet air of the car. I chose to trust the man holding me, rather than the memory of the man who had let me go.
"Look at me," he whispered.

His voice was so soft it was almost a breath against my hair. I had been staring straight ahead, my eyes fixed on the back of Lucas's head or the road unfolding through the windshield, too afraid that if I moved, the fragile peace I’d found would shatter. But at his command, I tore my gaze away from the horizon. I turned my head to face him directly, intending to just look at him, but our proximity was closer than I realized.
The moment I turned, my lips crashed into his. It was an accident of timing and distance, a sudden collision that caught me completely off guard.

Adrian didn't pull away. He didn't flinch or retreat from the unexpected contact. But he didn't immediately reciprocate either. He just stayed there, his face inches from mine, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that felt like it was searching my very soul. He was waiting, giving me the space to decide what happened next.

As for me? The "accidental" nature of the kiss vanished the second I felt the warmth of his skin. My senses, which had been dulled by the heavy weight of my memories, suddenly jolted wide awake. Every nerve ending in my body seemed to catch fire. I didn't pull back. Instead, I leaned in, kissing him back with a hunger I hadn't even realized I was harboring. I poured all my frustration, my hope, and my longing into that contact.

Then, the hesitation in him broke. He returned the kiss just as fiercely as I was giving it. His hand moved to the back of my neck, his fingers tangling in my hair to hold me there, and for that moment, the road to Silver Fang didn't matter. The rejection didn't matter. There was only the heat of the kiss and the reality that, for better or worse, we were bound together.

By the time we finally pulled our lips apart, the air in the back of the car felt thick and hard to swallow. My lungs were working overtime, and I could feel the rapid thud of Adrian’s heart echoing my own. He didn't let me go completely; instead, he reached up and guided my head down, tucking it firmly against the crook of his neck and his chest. I stayed there, listening to the rhythmic beat of his heart, letting the sudden quiet of the car settle over us. For a long moment, the only sound was the muffled roll of the tires against the road and our synchronized, heavy breathing.

"How do you feel now?" he asked.
His voice was a low rumble against my ear, vibrating through my chest. I blinked, my mind still a bit foggy from the intensity of the moment. I found myself caught in a loop of confusion.

Was he asking about the kiss? Was he checking to see if that "accidental" collision had shifted something inside me? Or was he asking about the bigger picture—the anxiety of returning to Silver Fang and the memories that had been trying to drown me just minutes ago?
I tried to shift, wanting to look up into his face to gauge his expression and ask exactly what he meant, but his hand was there, gently but firmly pressing against the back of my head. He wasn't hurting me, but he was making it very clear he wasn't ready to let go of the physical closeness just yet. He wanted me right there, tucked against him. I struggled for a second, then realized I didn't actually want to move that much anyway, so I gave up and went limp against him.

"What do you mean?" I asked back.
The second the words left my mouth, I wanted to take them back. My voice didn't sound like mine at all. It was soft, breathless, and carried a trace of something that sounded dangerously like being lovestruck. I sounded like a girl who had forgotten all about her warrior training and her past hurts just because a man had kissed her. It was irritating, but I couldn't seem to find my usual grit.
"I mean you," Adrian said, his tone softening even further. "You were so tense back there. I could feel it radiating off you in waves. I needed to do something to calm you down."

The realization hit me with a sharp jab of indignation. I pulled back slightly, despite his resistance, my eyes narrowing. "So... you kissed me?" I blurted out.
