Chapter 34
Fiona was stunned by his words. She realized that she had been selfish, and that her actions had hurt both Leo and Celeste.
The sound of the door slamming echoed through the house. It was followed by the sound of footsteps, fading into the distance.
Fiona stood alone, her heart pounding. She couldn't believe what had just happened. She had said something she didn't mean, and now she had lost the person she loved most. How could she have been so stupid?
She knew she had to apologize, but it wouldn't be easy. She had to swallow her pride and admit that she was wrong. But would it be enough to win back Leo's trust?
...
Fiona looked at Celeste, her eyes full of remorse. "I'm so sorry for what I said," she said. "I know that you have a big heart, and that's what drew Markus to you. I was just jealous, and I said things I didn't mean. Please forgive me."
Celeste was taken aback by Fiona's apology. She had never seen this side of her before. After a moment's hesitation, she hugged Fiona.
"Of course I forgive you," said Celeste.
Celeste embraced Fiona, and the tension between them melted away. "I will do what I can," Celeste replied. "But you also need to be willing to make changes. You can't just expect him to come back without making an effort."
Fiona nodded, her eyes welling up with tears. "I know," she said. "I will do whatever it takes to make things right. I love him, and I don't want to lose him."
Celeste placed a hand on Fiona's shoulder. "I believe you," she said.
Celeste looked at Fiona, who was smiling for the first time since they had started talking.
"Thank you," said Fiona. "I know this is a lot to ask, but I need your help. Can you help me get my husband back?"
Celeste took a deep breath. "Of course," she said. "I'll do whatever I can."
...
Leo walked through the meadow, enjoying the scent of wildflowers and the warm sunshine. He spotted his friend, Markus, sitting on a large rock, petting his female dragon, Scales.
Leo approached the pair, and Scales lifted her head, her forked tongue flicking in and out. Leo smiled and began to brush Scales' head with his hand. "You're a beautiful dragon, Scales," he said.
Scales purred contentedly, her tail flicking back and forth. Markus smiled at the exchange. "She says thank you," he said, interpreting Scales' purring.
Leo laughed. "That's quite the talent you have there, my friend," he said. "You must have quite the bond with Scales."
Markus nodded.
As Leo's hand brushed against Scales' head, the dragon purred contentedly.
"She says Thank you," said Markus, who was starting to feel more connected to the other man.
"I speak dragon too, you know," said Leo with a smile. "It's one of my many talents."
"You do?" said Markus, a hint of surprise in his voice. He had always thought of Leo as an enigma, someone who kept his true self hidden. This new revelation was a pleasant surprise.
Leo took a deep breath. "I called off the engagement," he said, his voice shaking slightly. "It wasn't right. I couldn't go through with it."
"Why?" said Markus, his eyebrows raised in confusion. "Why would you give up on something as important as an engagement?"
Leo shifted nervously, avoiding eye contact. "Because it wasn't real," he said. "Fiona wasn't in it for the right reasons. She just wanted to win, to be better than everyone else. I can't be a part of that."
Markus let the words sink in.
Markus placed a hand on Leo's shoulder. "I'm so sorry you went through all that," he said. "But I have to say, I admire your self-respect. Not many people would have done what you did."
Leo managed a faint smile. "Thanks," he said.
Markus felt a sinking feeling in his stomach. He had known this moment was coming, but it still hit him like a punch in the gut. Leo's rejection of Fiona was the end of an era, the end of their friendship as they had known it.
Leo's eyes darted from Celeste to Fiona, confusion and anger warring in his expression. Celeste stepped back, leaving Leo and Fiona alone, face to face. The silence stretched on, and Fiona's expression began to change from defiance to something else - something that looked almost like meekness.
Leo swallowed hard. The tension in the air was almost unbearable.
"Leo," said Fiona, approaching him carefully. But Leo flinched as if her touch were fire itself.
Fiona realized she had hurt him, and her heart sank. In a gesture of peace, she offered him a chaplet. "Will you be my husband again?" she asked.
"Fiona!" Leo hissed. "We are not married, only affianced!"
Fiona's eyes filled with tears. "That's not true," she whispered. "I loved you, more than anything."
"Please, just give me one more chance," pleaded Fiona. Her voice was shaking, and her eyes were pleading.
Leo hesitated. He knew this was a mistake, but something in him couldn't let her go. "Fine," he said, his voice tight. "But we have to start over from the beginning. No more secrets."
Fiona nodded, a glimmer of hope in her eyes. They both knew it would be difficult, but they were willing to try.
As Markus reached out to hug Leo, a wave of emotion washed over him. He had seen his friend go through so much, and he was glad that things were finally coming together for him. He felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.
As they all waved farewell, the in-laws looked dejected. They had tried their best to drive a wedge between Markus and Celeste, but they had failed miserably. As the car drove away, they huffed and puffed in frustration.
As Markus returned home, he couldn't shake the feeling of sadness that lingered in his heart. It wasn't just sadness for his friend, Leo, but also for the situation that had unfolded. It had been a difficult time for all of them, and even though things had turned out for the best, it was hard not to feel a little bit of sadness for what had been lost along the way.
Celeste, on the other hand, was feeling a mixture of emotions.
Cedric's bumbling had actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. He had managed to distract the in-laws, giving Celeste the time she needed to work through her feelings. And in the end, his bumbling had even helped to bring Fiona and Leo together. It was a strange turn of events, but one that Cedric was proud of.
As for the in-laws, they were surprised by the turn of events. They had been so sure that Celeste and Leo would end up together, and they hadn't considered the possibility of someone else being in the picture.
It was the breaking point for Markus. The stress and emotions of the past few weeks had finally caught up to him, and he was overcome with emotion. It was a confusing mixture of feelings - bitterness, appreciation, and even relief. He didn't know how to make sense of it all, but he knew that he needed to take some time to process everything that had happened.
It was a time of reflection and introspection for him.
The shadow of his father loomed large over Markus, even in his moment of crisis. He couldn't help but wonder if all of this was worth it, if pursuing his destiny was really what he wanted. And on top of that, the looming threat of the god killers only added to his anxiety. It felt like the weight of the world was on his shoulders.
It was a lot to deal with, and he wasn't sure how to handle it all.
As Markus prepared to continue his journey, he couldn't help but feel a sense of dread and trepidation. He knew that this was a defining moment in his life, a crossroads where he would have to make a choice that would change everything.
