Chapter 75 First Kiss
Kaelen's POV
I stared at her for a long moment, letting my ice-blue eyes lock with hers as my wolf surged forward with an intensity that made the golden light flare in my gaze. The afternoon sun painted her silver hair with highlights that made her look almost ethereal, and the mate bond thrummed between us with a force that was becoming harder and harder to ignore.
Two seconds passed in weighted silence, the air between us growing thick with unspoken emotion. I could hear her heartbeat accelerating, could smell the slight spike of adrenaline that indicated nervousness mixed with something else, something warmer that made my wolf rumble with satisfaction.
My throat felt tight as I forced out her name, the single word carrying more weight than it should. "Elara..."
Her heartbeat accelerated further, the sound drumming in my enhanced hearing like a war drum, and I watched as confusion flickered across her silver-grey eyes. "What is it?" she asked, her voice slightly breathless in a way that made my wolf surge with possessive satisfaction.
I raised my hand slowly, giving her time to pull away if she wanted to, but she remained still as my fingers made contact with her cheek. Her skin was impossibly soft beneath my touch, warm and alive in a way that sent electricity racing through my entire body. "Your heart races when you're nervous," I said quietly, my thumb brushing along her cheekbone with deliberate gentleness.
Elara blinked up at me, clearly startled that I could sense such intimate details about her physical state. "That's because..." she started, but the words trailed off as my hand shifted, my fingers sliding into the silky strands of her silver hair.
I tucked a loose strand behind her ear with careful precision, letting my fingertips trail along the delicate shell before settling at the curve where her neck met her jaw. The mate bond flared hot and bright at the contact, and I had to fight the urge to pull her closer and never let go.
"Just like right now," I murmured, my voice dropping to a register that I knew would affect her, that carried the kind of dangerous magnetism I usually kept carefully controlled.
I leaned in slightly, close enough that our breaths mingled in the space between us, close enough that I could see the way her pupils dilated and her lips parted on an unsteady exhale. "You're always like this when you're near me."
Something shifted in her expression then, a flicker of realization that made her eyes narrow slightly even as her pulse continued its frantic rhythm. She studied my face with the kind of intensity that suggested she was trying to solve a puzzle, and I wondered if she could sense what I was barely managing to keep contained—the desperate need to claim her properly, to make her understand exactly what she meant to me.
"You seem... different somehow," she said softly, uncertainty threading through her words. "I can't quite put my finger on what it is, but something's changed."
I didn't answer immediately, just let my hand fall away from her face as I stepped back and gestured toward the sleek black car waiting at the edge of the garden. "Come on. We should get you back to the academy before it gets too late."
Then I took her by the hand and brought her to my car.
The interior of my car was exactly as I preferred it—luxurious in an understated way, with black leather seats and subtle chrome accents that spoke of wealth without being ostentatious. The privacy partition was already raised, sealing us into the back seat in a cocoon of quiet intimacy that made every sound seem amplified.
Elara settled into the seat beside me, and I watched as she fastened her seatbelt with fingers that trembled just slightly. The afternoon sun streaming through the tinted windows cast golden light across her features, highlighting the elegant lines of her face and making her silver hair shimmer like moonlight.
I turned in my seat to face her fully, and the movement brought our bodies closer together in the confined space. My ice-blue eyes locked onto hers with an intensity I made no effort to soften, and I felt the golden light begin to swirl in my gaze as my wolf pushed forward with demands I could no longer ignore.
Slowly, deliberately, I raised one hand and braced it against the seat beside her head, effectively caging her in without actually touching her. The position was intimate and possessive, transforming the already small space into something that felt impossibly private and charged with unspoken tension.
Her silver-grey eyes widened as she realized what I was doing, and I heard her breath catch in a way that sent satisfaction coursing through my veins. The mate bond thrummed between us with almost painful intensity, a physical sensation that made it hard to think about anything except how much I wanted to close the remaining distance between us.
"From the moment I confirmed you are my fated mate," I said, my voice low and rough with emotion I'd been suppressing for days, "I knew you were the only person I would ever want to protect in this lifetime." The words came out more intense than I'd planned, but they were true in a way that went bone-deep, that resonated with every instinct my wolf possessed.
Elara's pupils contracted sharply, shock rippling across her features as she processed what I was saying. Her lips parted as if to speak, but no sound emerged, and I continued before she could find words to deflect or minimize what I was trying to tell her.
"Everything I said in front of your family today—I meant every single word." I leaned in slightly, close enough that I could see the individual flecks of grey in her eyes, the way her lashes cast shadows on her cheeks. "You're not a burden. You're not a responsibility I'm grudgingly accepting. You're my choice, Elara. You're the future I want."
Her throat worked as she swallowed hard, and when she finally managed to speak, her voice came out shaky and uncertain. "Kaelen... are you saying..."
I shifted my hand from the seat to her face, cupping her cheek with a gentleness that contrasted sharply with the fierce possessiveness burning through my chest. "I'm asking you, Elara Sterling, if you'll officially be with me. Not to appease your family. Not because the fated mate bond forces us together. But really, truly together—as partners, as lovers."
The vulnerability in my own voice surprised me, the slight tremor that crept in despite my best efforts to maintain control. "Give me a chance to prove I can be someone you rely on. Someone who deserves you."
Her heartbeat thundered so loudly I could feel it reverberating through the space between us, and I watched as a dozen different emotions flickered across her face in rapid succession—shock, confusion, hope, fear, and something that might have been longing.
She drew in a deep, shuddering breath, her silver-grey eyes searching mine for several long seconds before she slowly, carefully nodded. "...Okay," she whispered, the single word barely audible.
But it wasn't enough. I needed to hear her say it clearly, needed the confirmation that she understood exactly what I was asking and was choosing it anyway. My eyes blazed brighter with golden light that spilled across both of us, and my voice came out rough with desperate hope. "What did you say?"
Elara's chin lifted slightly, and when she spoke again, her voice was stronger, more certain. "I said... I'm willing. I want to be with you."
The relief that crashed through me was so intense it was almost painful, a physical sensation that made my chest tighten and my wolf howl with triumph. A low sound escaped my throat, somewhere between a sigh and a groan, as if I'd been holding my breath for days and could finally exhale.
My fingers slid from her cheek to her chin, tilting her face up with gentle pressure as I leaned in closer. Our breaths mingled in the shrinking space between us, and I could feel the frantic rhythm of her heartbeat matching my own. The golden light that had been swirling around me intensified, spilling across both of us and filling the car's interior with a warm, ethereal glow that seemed to pulse in time with the mate bond.
I paused with my lips hovering just above hers, close enough that the slightest movement would close the distance, close enough that I could taste her breath. My eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made the air feel thick and heavy, and I forced myself to ask the question even though every instinct screamed at me to just take what I wanted. "Then... may I kiss you?"
Color bloomed across Elara's cheeks, a delicate flush that spread down her neck and made her look impossibly beautiful in the golden light. But she didn't pull away, didn't retreat or deflect. Instead, she held my gaze with a bravery that made my heart clench, and whispered a single word that shattered the last of my restraint.
"...Yes."
