Chapter 73 Her Fated Mate
Aurora's POV
Matilda's trembling hand gripped her cane as she turned her fury on Sebastian. "One million dollars lost on Nolan's project and you immediately suspect Aurora?" Her voice shook with anger. "You're being foolish, Sebastian! Absolutely foolish! And to question your own mother in front of the entire family, showing such disrespect!"
I kept my eyes lowered, letting my shoulders curve inward. My hands twisted together in my lap, fingers trembling just enough to be visible. "It's all my fault," I whispered. "I shouldn't have..."
Matilda immediately patted my hand with gentle reassurance.
Perfect. The dynamic was shifting exactly as I'd calculated. But I knew this wasn't enough. Elara's accusations about the dolls had created doubt that would only grow if I didn't eliminate it completely.
The solution was bold—I would destroy the dolls publicly, demonstrating my innocence while eliminating evidence before anyone could examine it. The truly important vessels were already safely stored at Nolan's estate where no one would think to look.
"I've made my decision," I announced. "I'm going to destroy all the dolls. Every single one. If they're causing this much suspicion, then they need to go."
Nolan's face crumpled. "Aurora, no! You don't have to do this! Those dolls are yours—"
"It's the only way to prove I have nothing to hide," I interrupted gently, squeezing his hand.
---
The morning sun broke over the horizon as the maid and I loaded boxes into the car—all of my dolls carefully packed. I'd included several genuinely innocent ones that contained no energy vessels, dolls that could be examined without revealing anything suspicious. The dangerous ones were already gone.
The incinerator facility was ready when we arrived. The incinerator roared to life, flames leaping behind the reinforced glass in shades of orange and white.
I took the doll with trembling fingers, staring at the painted features I'd crafted so carefully. For just a moment, I let genuine regret flicker across my face because some of these dolls had taken real time and effort to create. Then I placed it on the conveyor belt, watching as flames consumed it in seconds.
One by one, I fed the dolls into the incinerator while the family watched in silence. Some were simple cloth creations, others elaborate porcelain masterpieces with hand-stitched clothing and carefully painted faces.
The narrative was shifting exactly as I'd intended. By the time the last doll disappeared and the incinerator's roar died down, I'd eliminated any physical evidence while positioning myself as the wronged party who'd made an enormous sacrifice.

Elara's POV
The knock came mid-morning as I packed to return to Moonveil Academy. Maple lifted her head from the floor, tail wagging.
"Come in," I called.
James slipped inside and sat on my bed. "You're really leaving? Just like that?"
"There's nothing more I can do without evidence," I said, folding another shirt into my suitcase. "Aurora destroyed all the dolls this morning in a very public display."
James's hands clenched into fists. "She destroyed evidence, you mean. Those dolls had something wrong with them, Elara. The way she rushed to burn them proves it."
"I know," I said quietly. "But knowing and proving are different things, especially when grandmother is so determined to protect her. Without physical evidence, anything I say just sounds like jealousy."
He pulled out the cracked protection amulet I'd given him. The leather cord was frayed and the stone had split cleanly down the middle. "It broke, which means it worked exactly like you said it would. So... I was wondering if maybe you had another one?"
I reached into my bag and pulled out the new amule. "Here. Try not to break it quite so quickly this time."
James took it with reverent care. "Is this really for me? Like, mine to keep?"
"Yes, you idiot, it's yours," I said, shaking my head at his excitement.
He fastened it around his neck immediately, tucking the stone beneath his shirt with obvious satisfaction. "Thank you, Elara. You have no idea how much safer I feel knowing I have this."
Maple bounded over and demanded attention, her massive paws landing on James's knees with enough force to make him grunt. He laughed and scratched behind her ears.
"For what it's worth," he said more seriously, "I believe you about Aurora. And if she really is doing something wrong, she'll make a mistake eventually. People like that always do."
---
When I descended the staircase with my suitcase, Maple at my heels. But Matilda's voice stopped me before I'd crossed the foyer, her cane tapping sharply against the marble floor.
"Stop right there! Who gave you permission to leave?"
I froze, looking up to see nearly the entire family gathered in the living room. Sebastian stood near the fireplace looking harried. Damian leaned against the wall, arms crossed.
"I'm returning to Moonveil Institute," I said evenly. "I have classes to attend."
Matilda's eyes flashed with something that looked almost like triumph. "Classes? Is that what you call sneaking around with men and bringing shame to this family? You're young and already being photographed in intimate situations with men, making those of us with any dignity in the Sterling family lose face!"
Aurora stood beside Matilda's chair, her expression perfectly concerned. "Grandmother, please don't get upset. I'm sure Elara can explain. Maybe those photos were just... misunderstood. Maybe it was just a friend and the angle made it look more intimate."
She paused delicately before adding with perfectly calculated hesitation, "After all, she's been away from the family for so many years. Perhaps her understanding of proper social interactions is just... different from our traditional family values."
The implication was clear, painting me as someone whose years away had resulted in loose morals. My jaw clenched hard.
Sebastian's voice cut through sharply. "Mother, Elara is eighteen years old. Who she chooses to spend time with is her own business and her own right."
Damian moved to stand beside me with casual grace. "Besides, those photos weren't a misunderstanding. She does have a fated mate."
The room erupted in shocked silence. Every head turned toward us with expressions of disbelief and sudden intense curiosity.
Matilda's eyes widened, her grip on her cane tightening until her knuckles turned white. "What?! A fated mate?! Who is it? I demand to meet him immediately!" Her tone made clear she didn't believe it.
Damian pulled out his phone, typing quickly before looking back up with perfect calm. "Well, since you're so insistent on meeting him, I suppose we can arrange that. In fact, he's already on his way here."
James appeared at my other side, leaning close to whisper, "Who is your mate? Did Damian tell you he was going to do this?"
I shook my head slightly, my heart beating faster. Around the room, Aurora's expression flickered with something that might have been concern beneath her polite interest, while Nolan and several others leaned forward with obvious anticipation.
Grandfather spoke up from near the window, his tone carrying genuine curiosity. "A fated mate? That's quite significant. When did this happen?"
"Recently," Damian said simply, not elaborating as he slipped his phone back into his pocket. His eyes met mine briefly, and I saw reassurance there mixed with something that might have been amusement.
The living room fell into tense silence as everyone waited, the air thick with anticipation. I stood with my suitcase still in hand, Maple pressing against my legs.
The doorbell chimed, cutting through the silence. My enhanced senses picked up the distinctive Alpha presence beyond the door before anyone else could, that familiar golden aura that made my heart skip and my wolf stir with recognition.
Damian gestured to the butler with casual authority. "Please show our guest in."
The door opened and suddenly Kaelen was there, tall and imposing in a perfectly tailored black three-piece suit that emphasized his powerful build. His ice-blue eyes swept across the room with predatory assessment before landing on me with an intensity that made heat flood through my body.
He crossed the distance with confident strides, his Alpha presence filling the space in a way that made several people unconsciously step back. He moved directly to my side and took my hand with natural possessiveness that sent electricity racing up my arm.
Then he turned to face the assembled Sterling family, nodding slightly toward the elders first in a gesture of respect. "I heard Alpha Sebastian wanted to meet me," he said, his deep voice carrying easily across the space with calm authority.
His expression was polite but carried an edge that made it clear he wouldn't tolerate disrespect. He shifted slightly, his hand tightening around mine as he addressed everyone present with deliberate formality.
"Allow me to properly introduce myself. I'm Kaelen Thorne, Elara's fated mate."
