Chapter 59 Enrollment Day

Chapter 59 Enrollment Day
Elara's POV

I folded the last of my clothes into the suitcase, my hands moving with practiced efficiency that came from years of packing up my life at a moment's notice. Back in Shadowveil, I'd done this alone countless times, stuffing my few belongings into worn bags while the other pack members watched with indifferent eyes or didn't bother to watch at all, and no one had ever asked where I was going or if I needed help carrying anything.

I zipped up the suitcase and hauled it off the bed, then made my way downstairs with the luggage bumping against my leg at every step. The moment I reached the first-floor hallway, I heard voices coming from the main hall and found Sebastian, Damian, and Kaelen all standing near the entrance, clearly waiting for me.

Sebastian looked up as I approached, his expression warm but firm. "We're driving you to the school."

I immediately started to protest, setting down my suitcase. "You don't have to do that, I can take a car service or—"

"We want to," Damian interrupted smoothly, already reaching for my luggage. "Besides, we need to make sure the place is actually safe before we leave you there."

Kaelen's dark eyes met mine across the hall, and his voice was quiet but absolute. "I'm coming too."

I opened my mouth to argue that they all had better things to do than escort me to school like I was a child, but the look on Sebastian's face made it clear that this wasn't up for discussion.

Something warm bloomed in my chest at their insistence, at the simple fact that they cared enough to make this journey with me, and I found myself nodding in acceptance even as I tried to blink away the sudden moisture in my eyes.

The SUV wound through increasingly dense forest as we left the city behind, the trees growing taller and more ancient with every mile until they formed a canopy so thick that the midday sun barely penetrated through the leaves.

Damian drove with his usual controlled precision while Sebastian occupied the passenger seat, and I sat in the back next to Kaelen, hyper-aware of his presence beside me and the way his hand occasionally brushed against mine when the car hit a bump in the road.

The forest finally opened up to reveal a sprawling complex of Gothic buildings that looked like they'd been standing for centuries, all dark stone and arched windows and towers that reached toward the sky like fingers.

The main gate was wrought iron worked into intricate patterns of moons and stars, and as we passed through it I felt a subtle shift in the air, some kind of protective magic settling over my skin like a cool breeze.

Seraphina was waiting in the central courtyard when we pulled up, her silver hair catching the dappled sunlight that filtered through the ancient oak trees surrounding the square. She approached as we climbed out of the vehicle, her expression welcoming but professional as she inclined her head in greeting.

"Miss Sterling, welcome to Moonveil Institute." Her pale eyes shifted to my companions. "Alpha Sebastian, Alpha Damian, and Alpha Thorne. I'm honored by your presence."

Damian's expression was polite but his tone carried an edge of protective concern. "We wanted to see the security measures in place before leaving our sister here."

Kaelen's voice was much colder, his Alpha presence pressing outward with enough force that several passing students stopped to stare. "If she's harmed while under your care, there will be consequences."

Seraphina's gaze settled on Kaelen with something that looked almost like amusement, and when she spoke her voice carried a note of gentle understanding. "Alpha Thorne, I understand the mate bond makes it difficult to be separated, but I assure you that Miss Sterling will be perfectly safe within these walls."

I wanted nothing more than to sink through the ground and disappear as my face heated with embarrassment.

Seraphina continued, "Now, shall we proceed with the enrollment formalities?"

The administrative hall was exactly what I'd expected from an ancient magical institution, all dark wood paneling and floating candles and shelves lined with leather-bound books that probably predated modern civilization. Seraphina produced an ornate scroll and unrolled it across a massive oak desk, gesturing for me to approach.

"Place your hand here and speak the Guardian's Oath," she instructed, pointing to a silver circle inscribed with runes at the bottom of the parchment.

I pressed my palm to the cool metal and felt power surge through me as I recited the ancient words, my voice steady despite my nervousness. The moment I finished speaking, a silver crescent moon mark appeared on my forehead, glowing softly before fading to an almost invisible shimmer against my skin.

Seraphina nodded in satisfaction. "Your courses will focus on advanced Guardian techniques, magical theory, and combat training. Your dormitory is in the East Wing." She paused, her expression softening slightly. "I expect great things from you, Miss Sterling."

The Institute's dining hall was less formal than I'd anticipated, with long wooden tables and the comfortable chaos of students gathering for lunch. We found a relatively quiet corner, and I watched as Sebastian immediately started fussing over my meal selection.

"Make sure you eat properly," he said, his tone carrying the same gentle concern I'd grown accustomed to over the past weeks. "No skipping meals just because you're busy with classes."

Damian reached across the table to add more meat to my plate, ignoring my protests. "You need to keep your strength up, especially with the training you'll be doing."

I noticed that Kaelen hadn't touched any of the food on his own plate, his dark eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin prickle with awareness. I set down my fork and looked at him directly. "Why aren't you eating?"

His lips curved into a small smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Watching you is enough."

I felt my face flush hot and immediately dropped my gaze to my plate, acutely aware of Sebastian and Damian exchanging knowing glances across the table. The rest of the meal passed in a blur of conversation and gentle teasing, and I tried to memorize every detail of this moment, knowing it would be days before I saw them again.

---

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the courtyard as we walked toward the dormitory entrance, and I felt each step bringing me closer to a goodbye I wasn't ready to say. I thought about all those times in Shadowveil when I'd watched other pack members being embraced by family before departures, how I'd stood in corners and told myself I didn't need that kind of affection, and now here I was with people who actually cared and I didn't know how to ask for what I wanted.

I stopped walking and turned to face Damian, my voice coming out smaller than I'd intended. "Dad... can I hug you?"

I barely got the words out before Damian pulled me into his arms, his embrace strong and warm and everything I'd never known I needed. "You never have to ask permission for that."

Sebastian was next, his hug slightly awkward but no less genuine as he held me carefully like I was something precious. "Take care of yourself, Elara."

Kaelen was last, and the moment his arms closed around me I felt the mate bond flare to life between us with enough intensity to steal my breath. He held me tighter than the others had, possessive and protective and almost desperate, his lips brushing against my ear as he whispered words meant only for me. "I'll miss you every second you're gone."

My face immediately flushed hot at his words and the intimacy of his embrace, and I found myself pressing closer to him even as my heart hammered against my ribs. When I finally managed to find my voice, it came out as barely more than a whisper against his shoulder. "I'll miss you too."

I felt him tense slightly at my admission, his arms tightening around me for just a moment longer before he reluctantly let me go.

I pulled back and watched as the three of them headed toward the main gate, their figures growing smaller against the backdrop of the setting sun. My chest felt tight with emotion as I stood there, but my lips curved into a genuine smile because I finally understood what it meant to have a family.
