Chapter 47 Territorial Claim

Chapter 47 Territorial Claim
Elara's POV

My phone buzzed, and I smiled when I saw Kaelen's name flash across the screen before opening the message he'd sent.

"Congratulations on becoming a college student. By the way, your little troublemaker is here again."

The attached photo showed Maple sitting primly outside the door of his villa, her orange fur gleaming in the sunlight as she stared directly at the camera with what could only be described as smug satisfaction, and I felt warmth bloom in my chest at the sight of her determined little face that somehow managed to look both innocent and completely unrepentant at the same time.

I typed back quickly, fingers moving across the screen with practiced ease. "You're staying at the villa now?"

His response came almost immediately. "Moved here yesterday. I'll be staying in Silverstone Pack territory for the foreseeable future. Your dog seems to approve of the arrangement."

Astraea stirred inside me at the mention of him being closer, her presence pushing against my consciousness with eager anticipation that made my wolf whine low in her throat. The bond between us had grown stronger since we'd acknowledged it, each day making it harder to ignore the pull that drew me toward him like gravity, and I could feel her desperate need to see our mate thrumming through my veins with an intensity that made my hands tremble slightly as I set down my phone and reached for my jacket.

I grabbed the coat from the chair, slipping it on while trying to calm the flutter of excitement in my stomach. The afternoon sun was warm as I stepped outside, casting long shadows across the front path, and I'd barely made it past the gate when a familiar voice called out behind me.

"Elara, wait!"

I turned to find Nicholas jogging toward me with a large bouquet of roses clutched in his hands, their red petals almost garish in the bright light, and my stomach sank.

He stopped a few feet away, chest heaving slightly from his sprint, and thrust the flowers toward me with a smile. "Elara, I've been trying to find the right moment to talk to you alone. I know you might have had some misunderstandings about me before, but please believe me when I say that I've always liked you. It's always been you, from the very beginning."

I didn't take the roses, keeping my hands firmly at my sides while meeting his gaze with cool indifference that I hoped would end this conversation before it really began. The words sounded rehearsed, like he'd practiced them in front of a mirror multiple times, and the presumption behind them made Astraea growl low in my mind with territorial displeasure.

"I've already broken up with Vanessa," he continued, apparently not noticing or choosing to ignore my lack of response and the way I'd taken a small step backward. "I want to pursue you wholeheartedly now. Give me a chance, and I promise I'll treat you well. We're from the same social circles, the same world. We understand each other in ways that others couldn't possibly comprehend."

"I have no interest in you whatsoever," I said flatly, my voice carrying none of the politeness he probably expected from someone of my upbringing. "I've never liked you, and I never will. Please leave."

His face fell for a moment before determination replaced the disappointment, and he shook his head as if I'd said something foolish instead of crystal clear. "You don't need to be so cold, Elara. I'm being sincere here. I know we haven't spent much time together, but that can change. Just give me one opportunity to show you that we could work, that I can be exactly what you need."

I tried to move around him, but he shifted to block my path with a movement that was just aggressive enough to make alarm bells start ringing in my head, his hand shooting out to grab my arm with a grip that was just firm enough to make Astraea snarl in fury. "Please, just listen to what I'm saying. I'm a good match for you. We're both from high-ranking families, both respected in our packs. I can give you everything you deserve, everything you could possibly want."

"Let go," I said quietly, feeling silver light begin to gather at my fingertips as my magic responded to both my irritation and Astraea's rage that was building like a storm in my chest. "This is the last time I'll ask."

"You're just being cautious, I understand that," Nicholas insisted, his other hand coming up as if to pull me closer, completely oblivious to the danger he was courting or the way my eyes had started to glow with barely contained power. "But I'm serious about this, about you. Give me a chance to prove that I'm worthy of your attention, that I can make you happy if you'll just let me show you what I can offer."

The scent hit me before I heard anything, sharp and overwhelming in its intensity as it flooded the air around us with the unmistakable smell of cedar and moonlight and sulfur so strong it made my eyes water. It was the scent of an Alpha King in absolute fury, power condensed into pure rage that made every instinct I had scream danger, and I felt the exact moment when Kaelen's presence descended on us like a physical weight pressing down on everything within a hundred-foot radius.

I turned my head to find him standing less than ten meters away, and the sight of him made my breath catch in my throat despite the situation. His eyes had gone completely molten gold with Fenris so close to the surface that I could see his wolf in every line of his rigid body, and the killing intent radiating from him was so thick I could almost taste it on my tongue like copper and lightning and the promise of violence.

"Get your hands off her," Kaelen said, and each word came out like gravel dragged over steel, barely controlled violence wrapped in syllables that promised death if they weren't immediately obeyed. "Now."

Kaelen's POV

I had been on my way to meet Elara halfway, looking forward to seeing her reaction when she found Maple curled up on my couch like she owned the place, when I caught her scent on the wind carrying that familiar sweetness of jasmine and night-blooming flowers that always made Fenris purr with contentment.

But then another scent had layered over hers, male and presumptuous and far too close, and my wolf had gone absolutely feral in my mind with a rage so pure it nearly blinded me.

Male wolf, touching our mate, hands on what belonged to us, and I'd started running before conscious thought could catch up with instinct screaming at me to protect what was mine and destroy anything that dared threaten it.

The scene that greeted me when I rounded the corner made every protective, possessive, territorial instinct I had roar to life with murderous intent. Nicholas had his hands on Elara, one gripping her arm with a familiarity that made my vision go red and the other reaching to pull her closer, and the casual presumption in that touch made me want to rip his throat out with my bare hands and paint the street with his blood until everyone in this territory understood that she was off limits.

Fenris was howling for release, demanding I shift and tear this male apart for daring to touch our mate, and it took every ounce of control I possessed not to let him have exactly what he wanted. The Alpha King power that I usually kept carefully leashed exploded outward in a wave of dominance so strong that I saw Nicholas's knees buckle even as he finally had the sense to drop his hands and stumble backward.

I closed the distance between us in seconds, moving faster than a human eye could track, and grabbed Nicholas by his collar before he could process what was happening. The fabric bunched in my fist as I hauled him away from Elara, throwing him aside with enough force that he hit the ground hard and slid several feet across the pavement with a sound that would have been satisfying if I weren't so consumed with rage.

I positioned myself directly in front of Elara, my body a wall between her and this presumptuous bastard who thought he had any right to touch her, and let my Alpha presence wash over him in crushing waves designed to make him submit or break. Nicholas was sprawled on the ground now, his face pale and his body trembling under the weight of my power, and I could see the confusion in his eyes mixing with the fear as he struggled to understand what was happening and why the Alpha King was suddenly looking at him like he wanted to commit murder.

"Listen carefully," I said, my voice dropping to a lethal purr that made Fenris rumble with savage satisfaction in my chest. "I'm only going to say this once. Elara is my fated mate. She belongs to me. Only to me."

Nicholas's eyes went wide with shock, his mouth opening as if to question or protest, but I took a step forward and watched him scramble backward on instinct, his wolf recognizing the threat even if his human brain was still catching up to the reality of his situation and the fact that he'd just made a potentially fatal mistake.

"If I ever see you touch her again," I continued, letting each word fall like stones into deep water, heavy with promise and threat and the absolute certainty that I meant every syllable, "even once, even a single finger, I will rip out your throat in front of your entire pack. Do you understand what I'm telling you? This isn't a warning. This is a fact."

I released more of my Alpha power, the command laced through every syllable making it impossible for him to do anything but obey, his body going rigid under the force of my dominance. "Get out of here. Now. Don't let me see you anywhere near her again."

The authority in my voice was absolute, layered with Alpha King dominance that no wolf could resist regardless of their rank or their pack affiliation.

Nicholas practically fell over himself in his haste to comply. He scrambled to his feet and ran without looking back, not even bothering to grab the ridiculous bouquet of roses that lay scattered across the pavement like drops of blood.
