Chapter 124 We Won!
Elara's POV
I threw my hands forward and dozens of curse-breaking talismans shot from my fingers with perfect precision, each one striking a black wolf directly on the forehead. The moment the talismans made contact, the dark fog surrounding the wolves thinned visibly and their movements stuttered and slowed.
Thirty of our warriors shifted immediately, their silver-gray wolf forms meeting the black wolves in a brutal collision. The scene descended into chaos as the two groups clashed, snarls and howls filling the air. Damian transformed into his massive golden-eyed wolf and led a tactical strike team, coordinating attacks on legs and necks to bring down the controlled wolves with minimal injury.
Through our bond, Kaelen's voice cut through the noise. "Let the others handle the controlled wolves. We need to take down Malakai directly."
We both released our Alpha pressure at the same moment, the combined force of our dominance rolling across the battlefield like a physical wave. I felt my body begin to shift as Astraea surged forward, eager for battle and ready to protect our Pack.
My transformation completed in seconds and I stood as Astraea, a six-foot silver moon wolf with eyes of pure molten silver that burned with Guardian power and battle fury. Beside me, Kaelen had become Fenris, a seven-foot black wolf whose golden eyes blazed with the divine power of his wolf god bloodline.
Malakai's laughter echoed across the battlefield, high and mad. "Kill you both and I'll achieve true immortality! The entire world will bow before me!"
The black gemstone atop his staff erupted with dark light and countless magical chains shot toward us like striking serpents. Astraea threw back her head and howled, the sound resonating with ancient Guardian magic as silver moonlight coalesced into a massive shield that deflected the chains.
Fenris snarled low in his throat and golden energy gathered around his limbs, making them glow like molten metal. He launched himself forward with blinding speed, his claws tearing through the air as he closed the distance to Malakai in heartbeats.
A barrier of writhing black energy materialized in front of the sorcerer, formed from the tortured souls he had already consumed. Fenris's claws struck the barrier with tremendous force, making it shudder and crack but not quite breaking through.
I circled around to flank from the side, opening my jaws to release a breath of pure silver moonlight that struck the barrier at its weakest point. The combined assault from two directions proved too much for Malakai's defense and the black barrier shattered into fragments that dissipated into smoke.
Malakai stumbled backward with a grunt of pain, but his eyes blazed with manic fury. "Then we all die together!" he screamed, slamming his staff into the ground.
The ritual array beneath our feet began to pulse with violent energy. The life force of the trapped werewolves was being drained at an accelerated rate, their souls literally torn from their bodies to manifest as gray spectral forms that rushed toward us with grasping hands.
The spirits swarmed over Astraea and I felt them trying to consume my life force, their touch cold and draining. I let out a howl of pain as my energy began to fade, but then Fenris's rage exploded across our bond.
His golden eyes shifted to blood red as his wolf god bloodline activated fully, and the golden light surrounding him transformed into a searing red-gold that made the ground beneath his paws begin to melt. Fenris threw back his head and released a howl that shook the very air, the sound carrying divine power that shattered most of the attacking spirits instantly.
The mate marks on both our chests blazed with brilliant light simultaneously, and a visible cord of energy formed between us. Silver moonlight and red-gold flames intertwined and merged, creating a domain of combined power that spread outward from our position. Any spirit that entered the domain was instantly purified and released.
Malakai's eyes went wide with shock and disbelief. "The Divine Chain?! How is this possible?! You shouldn't be able to manifest it this quickly!"
Ancient silver runes appeared on Astraea's forehead, glowing with the accumulated power of thousands of years of Guardian magic. I drew on every reserve of power I possessed, channeling it all into a single devastating attack.
Fenris gathered his red-gold energy into his jaws, forming a sphere of condensed divine fire that distorted the air around it with its sheer heat and power.
Malakai bit through his own tongue in desperation, spraying his blood across the ritual array. "Blood Sacrifice: Soul Detonation!" he screamed, and the array erupted with crimson light. The bodies of the controlled werewolves began to swell grotesquely as Malakai prepared to detonate them all in a massive explosion.
From the perimeter, I heard my father's horrified shout. "Fall back! Everyone get back now!"
But there was no time for retreat. Through our bond, I sent a single urgent command to Kaelen. "Now! Use the Divine Chain to purify the entire array!"
Astraea and Fenris threw back our heads and howled in perfect synchronization. The mate marks on our chests exploded with light, sending twin pillars of gold and silver energy shooting into the sky. The pillars merged and spread, forming a massive net of interwoven power that descended over the entire mining complex.
The moment the purifying net made contact with the ground, the dark magic saturating the area simply ceased to exist. The controlled werewolves stopped their grotesque swelling and their eyes cleared as the curse controlling them was burned away. The blood-red symbols carved into every surface flashed once and then crumbled into harmless light.
Malakai's scream of despair cut through the sudden silence. "No! I spent fifty years! Fifty years building this power!"
The purifying net locked onto him specifically and his dark magic defenses disintegrated like paper in a furnace. Fenris released the red-gold sphere of divine fire and it shot forward like a meteor, striking Malakai directly in the chest.
At the same moment, the silver runes on Astraea's forehead blazed with blinding intensity and a pillar of pure white moonlight descended from the sky, intersecting with Fenris's attack at the exact point where Malakai stood.
The combined force of gold and silver, divine fire and Guardian light, created a explosion of purifying energy that was almost too bright to look at directly. Malakai's screams rose to an inhuman pitch as his body began to disintegrate, his flesh turning to black ash that scattered in an wind that existed only in the magical realm. His soul, blackened and corrupted by decades of dark magic, was completely obliterated without a trace remaining.
The ritual array shattered with a sound like breaking glass magnified a thousand times. The blood-red symbols flashed once more and then dissolved into motes of light that drifted upward and vanished.
But Vanessa, who had been so deeply connected to the array as its primary sacrifice, began to crumble as well. Her body turned to the same black ash as Malakai's, the corruption that had been forced into her blood consuming her from within.
With the last of her strength, Vanessa turned her fading eyes toward me. Her voice was barely a whisper, carried on the wind. "I just wanted to be like you. Why couldn't I be like you?" Then she was gone, nothing but ash scattering in the breeze.
A wave of profound sadness washed through me as I watched the last traces of Vanessa disappear. If only she had chosen a different path, if only she had accepted who she was instead of coveting what others possessed, perhaps she could have found real happiness and purpose.
The controlled werewolves collapsed to the ground as the last traces of dark magic left their systems. After a few moments of confused stillness, they began to stir and sit up, their eyes clear but bewildered. "Where are we?" one of them asked, his voice shaking with confusion and fear. "What happened?"
The warriors from the allied Packs erupted into thunderous cheers that echoed across the mining complex. My father's voice rose above the celebration, powerful and triumphant. "We won! Malakai is destroyed!"
Damian shifted back to human form and ran toward where I stood in my wolf form, his face split by a wide grin of relief and pride. "You did it, Elara! You actually did it!"
Colin and the other Alphas gathered around as well, their expressions showing gratitude and awe. "Without you, the entire werewolf world would have fallen to darkness," Colin said seriously. "Every Pack owes you a debt that can never be fully repaid."
I felt Kaelen's attention shift to me through our bond, and then his concern spiked sharply. Through the haze of exhaustion that was beginning to overwhelm me, I realized he was seeing something I hadn't fully registered yet.
"Elara!" His mental voice carried urgent worry as he shifted back to human form and moved to my side.
I transformed back as well, my body reforming into its human shape, but the moment the change completed I felt the full impact of what I had done. Manifesting the Divine Chain and channeling that much purifying power had drained every reserve of magic and life force I possessed. My vision blurred and darkened at the edges as my legs buckled beneath me.
I managed a weak smile as I looked up at Kaelen's worried face. "We won," I whispered, trying to put all my relief and joy into those two words.
Then the darkness rushed up to claim me and I felt myself falling backward. The last thing I registered before consciousness left me completely was Kaelen's arms catching me and pulling me tight against his chest, and his voice calling my name with desperate urgency.
"Elara!"
